Takaful: Maaf zahir & batin?

After coming under a week of public protests, Takaful Malaysia Syariah department head Mohd Fauzi Mustaffa today withdrew an inflammatory email circular directing staff not to convey greetings to Hindu clients during religious festivals.

Mohd Fauzi reiterated that the contents of the circular represented his personal opinion and not those of the Islamic insurance company.

This is the fax from the Takaful CEO's office at 15:58hr today.

Malaysiakini says the statement came an hour after several NGO representatives, led by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, held a meeting this afternoon with Takaful CEO Mohd Azmi Abu Bakar.

Takaful's Syariah department resides in its CEO's office, while Takaful Malaysia is a subsidiary of Bank Islam group.

Here's the context to the controversy, quoting from Malaysiakini:

Happy_deepavali.gifOn Oct 11, media reports highlighted the email from Mohd Fauzi, which said Hindu festivals involved the worship of deities and greeting Hindus was therefore akin to practising polytheism, which goes against the tenets of Islam.

He added that Takaful’s corporate culture was rooted in the Syariah, which forbids greetings involving gods in Hinduism and other religions.

“Muslims who have inadvertently wished Hindus Happy Deepavali, Happy Durga Pooja or Happy Lakhshmi Pooja must immediately repent and not repeat it in future," he said in the email.

The Takaful circular had come under fire from many quarters, including MIC president S Samy Vellu, Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Abdullah Md Zin.

Malaysia Hindu Sangam president A Vaithilingam had earlier called on Takaful to give Mohd Fauzi.the boot.

Earlier last week, Screenshots was forwarded copies of the offending email by several readers -- see PDF here. Thank you for alerting me.

Mindful that Mohd Fauzi has ealrier urged his colleagues to 'bertaubat', I hope he does the same so that such nonsense of religious intolerance wouldn't happen again to cause disharmony and disunity among fellow Malaysians.

Nasi dah jadi bubur lambuk dah... Fauzi !

What will they think of next? I am a non muslim, as such a kafir in the eyes of the muslim. If greeting our hindu friends is a no-no then shaking hands may require the muslim to 'samak 'his limb. The author of
Dummy's 'How not to live harmoniously" should get some pointers from this person.

“It is not an apology, he was saying that he was sorry for causing discomfort, not that he was sorry for saying that. It is two different things". As shouted by Syed Hamid Albar to LKY's apology.

I think the word-by-word statement by Syed can be repeated in this case.

And a more self-respected person would have immediately resigned as demonstrated by a tinktank recently. But certainly not this Takaful Fauzi.

If he want to express (read spread) his personal opinion using a listed company's communication channel, I think he had misused his authority (which he think is power).

This Fauzi had no place in the corporate world.

Folks

There always idiots in the Malaysian Govt Departments. This one is definitely the biggest idiot does not do any good service to Islam.

In fact, idiots like this Takaful Malaysia Syariah department Head Mohd Fauzi Mustaffa, who cause non Muslims to have a wrong and false impression of Islam.

Such idiots in our midst in Malaysia,a multi-religious country, well regarded for years as a racially and religously tolerant country, who feed into President George Bush's radical views of Islam.

Having the West to think of Islam in radical terms and tied to terrorism is already bad enough, now we have a tax-payer funded Religious Head, having his own interpretation of Islam.

HE MUST BE REMOVED FROM HIS CURRENT POSITION. PAK LAH IS A MUSLIM SCHOLAR. WHY IS PAK LAH KEEPING QUIET ???

GOD HELP MALAYSIA IF THERE ARE ANYMORE IDIOTS LIKE THIS ONE IN TAKAFUL MALAYSIA.

Just a positive note. Happy Deepavali to all Hindus celebrating your new year in Malaysia. You still have friends who cares.

Hmmmm, where is all the "believer"? Is it "political correct" or "political incorrect" to condemn Mohd Fauzi?

If we have to0 many radicals with narrow intepretation of Islam, one can't keep crying foul that Islam is view in a different light amongst the West.

Statement by Fauzi is religious extremism and as far as his narrow minded view is concerned all other religions are sembah batu and semua in orang kafir. It will start with simple extremism with greetings, them orang muslinm cannot mix with orang kafir, then jabat tangan with orang kafir is prohibited and then what is next ...... We must fight this narrow intepretation of Islam and take on people like Fauzi head on!

I just wonder ....
Is this the result of Malaysia's Islamic Universities, where they fostered all those fanatic Talibans?
Where has the word 'tolerance' gone to in this country?

At least he apologizes and retracted his statement. He made a mistake and deserves forgiveness from us Malaysian brudders and sisters, unlike some untouchables in UMNO. BTW, how come mr. GE lim was there with the NGOs for the meeting with Takaful CEO instead of mr. vellu?

Albert, I assure you there are more brotherhood and sincere understanding of human relations in UIA, Gombak than the 'political biased' islamic heros of some skewed minded zealots who tarnish the true spirit of truth and non-prejudicial brotherhood of mankind.

As a non-muslim student doing MBA there before, I must say I feel comfortable with the lecturers and my course mates at all times at the Islamic University. Let us only be harsh to the "unrepresenting" self-professed know-all about life and divinity.

I read Fauzi's memo on the matter. I really don't see anything wrong with his teachings from the Islamic angle. He is applying one Quranic principle to one instance.

He is correct on his stand. It doesn't help him win brownie points with the unwashed masses like you and me (I?), but he is right on principle.

Most of us look at his statement from a muhibbah standpoint, but Fauzi is looking from a religion perspective. As much as you have a right to express your opinion, he also has his.

Religiosity polarises people, whenever and wherever you are. I am a bible-believing person, and I have specific beliefs on many matters as taught in scriptures, but it is a mistaken notion if I believe my God ever needs defending by me.

I always thought that God should be all-inclusive, not exlusionary. If he is exlusionary, then our picture of "godness" isn't big enough.

Sorry, exclusionary not exlusionary.

I always believe in Al Quran. Maybe some Muslim readers here should look into Surah Al Kafirun and think what Ustaz Fauzi really doing to the Muslim masses who think is alright to celebrate and wishes other religion holiday.

Yumcious;

No, Fauzi is wrong because his conclusion is based on his incorrect assumption that by greeting Happy Deepavali, to him it seemed as if the muslim is greeting to the hindu gods. Based on that premise, he conclude that it goes against the Aqidah of Islam.

I qoute his email below:

"Ucapan Happy Durga Pooja, Happy Lakshmi Pooja dan Happy Deepavali seolah-olah mengucap selamat buat tuhan hindu yang bernama Durga, Laksmi dan Krishna. Dan ianya jelas bertentangan dengan akidah
Islam."

I hold to the fatwa by European Council of Fatwa and Research.

Kamil,

how would u know Ust Fauzi assumption is incorrect when what he really trying to said that if you greets your Hindu friends with Happy Deepavali, you are admitting that Hinduism is as true as Islam, and that is blasphemous for a Muslim like me.

RANT,

How come greeting "Happy Deepavali" to someone can be considered as admitting that Hindu is my religion?

RANT

There is something seriously wrong with the use of your logic or your brain nerve cells.

Your interpretation of Al Quran based on this fool Mohd Fauzi's stupid analysis is that if I look at you, I see Allah in your face. That is the exact analogy if you agree that wishing someone Happy Deepavali means you are wishing some Hindu Gods your best wishes.

Come on, take a cold shower. One can debate on how to interpret the Holy Book till the cows come home or till Heaven and Hell meet.

It is because of your kind of analysis and agreement with this wayward Uztaz that is causing so much pain to decent Muslims around the world today, with all the terrorism and misunderstanding of Islam by others.

RANT,

what you said is true. non-muslim and ignorant muslim will say whatever pleased them.

next time they will asked us to pray side by side them, for the respect of freinship or neighbourhood.....LOL

According to Rosman definition, Tok Guru Nik Aziz must be an ignorant muslim for giving donation from the state cofer to To Cha (i.e., sami Siam)in Kelantan.

And also surah Al-Kafirun is about worshiping and not about greeting non-muslims.

Al-Kafirun (translation):
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

[1] Say: O ye that reject Faith!

[2] I worship not that which ye worship,

[3] Nor will ye worship that which I worship.

[4] And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship,

[5] Nor will ye worship that which I worship.

[6] To you be your Way, and to me mine.

Kamil,

what a shallow thinking...

nik aziz donation comes from state coffer which comes from all state citizen which comprise muslim+non-muslim.

also what a shallow al-kafirun raw translation...

Rosman;
So which Quran are you reading if the translation I gave above is raw translation. I must be reading a different Quran all this while.

I mean to say a "shallow raw translation" not "raw translation".

To proof its sincerity, Takaful Malaysia can issue a public Happy Deepavali greetings to all Hindus on its website and major newspapers.

Note : as of 18/10/06,8pm, I was unable to access Takaful Malaysia website

I hereby wish all our Hindus and Muslims friends Happy Deepavali and Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri

kamil

rosman is the kind of Muslim who reads bits and piece of the Al Quran and comes out and thinks he understood everything what the Holy Book says.

That is the kind of dangerous Muslim the West is facing today. Taking bits and pieces and then assuming that's what the Holy Book is all about.

I wouldn't waste my precious brain cells engaging him on this.

He is what we call the Over-Clever Muslim.

RANT !

Your statement :-

"how would u know Ust Fauzi assumption is incorrect when what he really trying to said that if you greets your Hindu friends with Happy Deepavali, you are admitting that Hinduism is as true as Islam, and that is blasphemous for a Muslim like me".

If one go by your same statement and wished someone Happy Birthday, would that person be admitting Birthday is also as true as Islam?

I do not think so.

In my humble opinion, in Islam, it is always safest to base things on intent (niat). So if you wish someone Happy Deepavali and your niat is just to acknowledge that they are celebrating their religious event and wishing them well, everything should be ok, insya allah. As surah Karifun states Islam acknowledges that there are other religions around and people have different faiths.

Seriously, if one can berpaling tadah and autoconvert by saying HAPPY [SOMETHING] then that person needs a brain damage to qualify for mentally disable status.

Likewise with the argument that just by saying "seolah-olah mengucap selamat buat tuhan hindu" sheesh.

In that case, I declare Nik Aziz's action to take money from muslim and non-muslim as seolah-olah mixing halal and haram money. We can go on and on, but really its (seolah-olah) laughable at best to suggest such interpretation.

Eman;

Right on! Totally agreed with you. Intention is very important.

Jeff,

My comments yesterday was not published. Maybe you didn't like it, but I thought it was in the public interest to think about this matter in depth.

In any event, I hope you read the 'fatwa' made by the Perak Mufti's Office in 2004. That's a dangerous trend of thought, and trust me, from my knowledge, it has poisoned the mind of a lot of Muslims. Fauzi is only 1 manifestation.

Whether you publish it or not, I hope you do take interest in the matter. Refer the fatwa to somebody knowledgeable in the topic, if you can. Thanks.

Dear Friends,

This is Malaysia, a multi-racial country. Wishing another people from another religion means respect to THAT PERSON's BELIEF and NOT ADMIT THAT BELIEF...if it is so that I think a lot of Malay are no more Malays...No offence guys.

If what this guy from takaful says that this is wrong, then I think he is wrong because I dont see any Malays or Chinese people wishing Happy Deepavaali to Indians means there are PLANNING or GOING to convert to Indian. If yes, then I think the guy from Takaful is the FIRST to do so. No offence again, because I think this guys is first to raise this issue from his point of view(using his power frm takaful on his ""personal opinion??"") I am sure somewhere some how he has wished another Indian Happy Deepavaali and I think he has eaten his own words!!!

Back to the topic, as a Malaysian(the guy frm takaful is not), I hereby RESPECT all religion in Malaysia and I wish Happy Deepavaali (fisrt Deepavaali, not because I am an Indian, but Deepavaali comes first), and Selamat Hari Raya to ALL MALAYSIAN.
(using the term of this guy frm takaful, I am now a Malaysian because I wish to Malaysians)

I belief there is only 1 GOD in this world whoever we are as every religion prays to GOD, its only the way of believe is different. Enjoy! Malaysians!!!

So our Patronas will be forbidden tosell oil to non-muslim countries, as they too pray to different god (by the definationof their respective religions) .

Whom do we sell it to then? The Arabs? Hahahahaha.

Good, really good.

Hisap-nor-puddin.

Fauzi must be a jack ass of the first degree.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
