Rejal Arbee's column axed... because of bloggers?

Rejal Arbee was told by one of the Berita Harian editors via e-mail yesterday that his Wednesday column has been terminated with immediate effect.

His crime? Apparently, Rejal had classified, in the unedited version of his column last week (August 30, 2006) that A. Kadir Jasin, Rocky's Bru and Jeff Ooi are "gentlemen bloggers".

Rejal, a former editor-in-chief of theSun, started his career as a journalist at Berita Harian on September 30, 1963. You have to find out who had instructed to inflict the old scribe his final wound.

Jeff, can your blogsite be directively-brutal axed or shut down should one day it is deemed crossed the line?

Your blog too is being scrutinised, not just being read or watched.

Have you thought about preventative measures or you don't give a "d"?

JEFF OOI says:I believe in Malaysia. If the eventuality is to shut it down, I shall abide by the law. But I don't think I will do anything unlawful in this 4-year-old blog as I am a 'Gentleman blogger' all along. But yes, this blog is being monitored by the power-that-be, law enforcers from various agencies, foreign embassies and international bodies, I was told. But don't lose sleep over this so long as we don't violate any law.

Where there's a will there's a way, there's nothing on the Internet that can be effictively stifled or shut-down.

That's the beauty of the design :)

Jeff is anti nst and pro previous administation.(Mahaleel interview was the evidence)

JEFF OOI says: Anti-NST? Despite what you spin, I still have Little Birds and friends at Balai Berita. There is a distinction between the Firm and good journalists who ply their trade professionally in there. I won't belittle any of those good ones left to carry the 163-year torch as Malaysia's grand old English paper. The gloom will soon be over at Jalan Riong.

kadir was aligned to the previous admin and single handedly destroyed the circulation of NST and other papers within the group.
Rocky bru- by the sound of it, he must be a part time bouncer of some sort.

Are they gentlemen? you go figure.

so being an anti nst and pro mahathir does not make a person a gentleman? is a status of a gentleman have to be ascertained by the persons' political alignment? if this is the case I would gladly not be a gentleman...

JEFF OOI says: The context of "gentleman bloggers" here was referenced to what Deputy Minister Shaziman has alluded to bloggers who put a public face and identity behind their blogs and do NOT blog behind anonymity. There is ample blog archive in Screenshots but reader sydput just wanted to give it his spin to sell his sermon, and hijack my blog context. The real context is that Rejal Arbee has paid his price under the reign of present day Berita Harian masters.

Jeff, I am not the only one (JEFF OOI says: So what? I ain''t here for Mr Popular beauty parade!) who thinks that you are not the switzerland of the blogsphere.

JEFF OOI says: Even Switzerland has to take sides and allow ill-gotten treasure trove to be stored there. Fine by you and fine by me.

Maybe subconciously, you still have a soft spot for TDM and his ideas.
That is ok by me though.

JEFF OOI says: Like I always said, I will side with the underdogs, and Mahathir is de facto underdog of the day. When he is "Thinking Allowed & Thinking Aloud", I can'tignore him.

Jeff,

Are sure it is the right policy to 'I always said, I will side with the underdogs...'?

Right now, TMNet / Streamyx is very much the underdog, subject of widespread hantam - hantam. And deservedly so. Are you going to side with them?

In history, we can find a large number of underdogs, both locally and around the world.

Dr Syed Husin, the wretched poorest of the poor in Malaysia and the toll highway users who have to pay high tolls are certainly underdogs who should be supported.

So too the oppressed citizens of Burma for example.

But there are also many 'underdogs' who deserve whatever is thrown at them.

Towards the tail-end of their reigns of horror, Hilter, Mussolini, Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic can be viewed as underdogs too with the calls for them to answer for their wrongs ringing louder and louder, and their crimes catching up with them. They deserve every bit to the treatment they got. They were reaping what they themselves sowed.

Surely you are not going to side with them just because they became 'underdogs' ? Or lower your guard when listening to them 'Thinking Allowed & Thinking Aloud'.

So even if 'Mahathir is de facto underdog of the day', that alone does not justify lumping him together with all the other underdogs.

I won't ignore him by any means, but I certainly do not think I should support him in any form or manner. Not the least because he is still playing his games, twisting and turning facts, spinning his tales and selectively remembering history, with some portions omitted for whatever reason.

And also because, despite the fact that I think he is now feeling a small measure of the hugh load of rubbish which he himself caused, he is also a fellow Malaysian. And despite what he may himself have done to others, he has his rights as one of the rakyat.

But only that - the rights of an ordinary Malaysian. Nothing more.

JEFF OOI says: I am not a superman. The only mouthpiece I have is this blog, a channel to a voice. I have been lending a hand to the underdogs -- from Joe Public to the dignitaries -- whose voices are not given space in the mainstream media. However, it's you guys who should use your intelligence and wisdom to discern the rights and wrong. I just don't play judge, and neither do I see things in absolute black and white.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
