2 days of sucky Streamyx

My home Streamyx has been sucky for the last two days and even now. I had a bad bout just two weeks ago and the old symptom is now back to torment me.

How's yours?

Yes. My Streamyx connection is bad these days too. Sometimes, even when I'm not downloading stuffs like podcasts or vidcasts, I frequently have timeouts from servers due to packet loss.

12 am to 6 am? no wonder everyday when i was surfing and blogging after midnight, i experienced intermittent disconnection from streamyx. terrible lah! most of the time it last only a few minutes but once in a while, quite a long time. been experiencing this since 10 days ago.

gosh! macam mana boleh ini. each time they upgrade, we their customers have to suffer?

TMNET should have the courtesy to inform "interruption" when advising us the TMnet bill, NOT just place it under the Annoucement and expect us to check there.
They have also the gall to accuse you of PORT SCANNING ACTIVITY (see below, warning) when they cannot have the "anti-virus & anti-spam" properly in place and expect you to subscribe to this service.

mine has been pretty bad the past 2 weeks. Sometimes, I get logged on long enough to login to MSN live, only to be logged out the next moment I logged in.

Basically, I tried doing a continous ping to TMnet DNS & Google.com, I'm getting high latency rates and a couple of time outs here and there pretty often.

seems like users cannot do much but complain...and streamyx don't seem to bother.

No competition is bad.

imagine when you'll have to click "Search" button in Google at least twice to get the response....

I understand about the service interruption notice, but it says:

5th – 19th September 2006 daily from 12:00 a.m. till 6:00 a.m.

And I don't surf net in that time frame..

This is absolutely a good prelude to Streamyx User Group meeting :)

During this Streamyx User Group meeting, pls tell Michael Lai to improve TMNet.

How to be world class, when TMNet's service s*cks big time?!

International to europe TM stinks big-time for about 1 year now.
Every time the same stupid excuse, problem with international connections. YES BECAUSE THEY USE THE CHEAPEST!
High time they spent some money!
If i complain to much they send Telekom to me to check my line (idiots) or ask me to do download test (local) while i complain international is terrible.
(Cannot get download above 15K on the best server!)

i was one of the earliest fools to be suckered in by Streamyx. I've had that service for ages now, and honestly, it's got worse. All these upgrades will do no good. And then a few months down the road, there will be another upgrade and we'll all be singing the same song again. A few questions..
1. what kind of ISP does upgraded every few months? it's not the 90s anymore.
2. what are they upgrading and at which point of the network are they doing this? does every single upgrade cripple the end user?
3. why are we made to pay full fees for all these upgrades and interupptions? why? this i cannot accpet. why?
But alas, i can only whinge. like someone said, they obviously don't give a rat's ass.

hi guys...

need not worry much.

Have you guys visited the ACM exhibition held at KLCCCC recently ?

By next year, among the whole klang valley will be flooded with wireless broadband service....

Mobif - iburst
SMART - Satelite Broadband
CNX Redtone
OCE
Times dot com

and many more...

I am sure you can find replacement which suits your needs.

No wonder.

I almost got hypnotised by me staring at the screen, just to wait for it to change.

Fellow bloggers, please don't mention the word "World class". Please. It has to reach "South East Asia class" first. It's trailing behind many other ISPs.

Slow browsing? No kidding.... It's so bad even Google won't come up...

JEFF OOI says: as I typed this at 12;45 noon Sept 8, my Gmailand Google News search both suffered.

This broadband matter is a total B.S.! Even opening out windows in a normal email has problem. I have to use Jaring dial up to back up, especially uploading file to my remote server.

Apology is a cheap skate excuse. You need to have a back up system when you do upgrading or complete upgrading with result at a predetermined time frame.

For instance, the server in US does do upgrading from time to time, but people carry out the job professionally within specified time frame. When people said “done“ it really means done, and when people said upgraded, it means the system is better.

It is no wonder that Malaysia is in position No: 25 in the global business environment survey report 2007. By the way the little red dot down South is in position No: 1.

JEFF OOI says: I am not on a shopping trip for TM net bashing. I just wanted to know the magnitude of the difficulty I currently face -- is it an isolated case or is it widespread. I have severe difficulty downloading my Gmail and getting news updates via Google News,or downloading Wikipedia for my research -- and therse are high availability (HA) sites. I also seemtohave latency linking to my own servers parked in Jaring data centre without having to go through the international gateway. And of course the latency and stranded packets happened frequently during Malaysian day time. Please kindly feedback along these lines. Thanks.

"...SERVICE INTERRUPTION.. We wish to inform our customers that TM Net is performing an upgrading exercise to the Streamyx system nationwide from 5th – 19th September 2006 daily from 12:00 a.m. till 6:00 a.m....."

WOW ! Quite UNBELIEVABLE !!

what about just make sure that you deliver exactly the 1Meg that we subscribe and pay for.. not short change it to 25% or 50% of that.. NO MORE NO LESS.

Many other countries' entry level broadband is already minimum 2M-4M at half the price.

Hi Jeff,

I am logging into Streamyx from Bandar Sri Damansara and since this morning 10am 8th Sept, I don't seemed to have any issues.

Last night I did experience slowness in sending emails from my outlook and also surfing but it was bearable considering the obvious.

I will try again tonight after midnight to see.

Previously, I have experienced complete unavailablity of streamyx service in my area eventhough the Helpdesk advised that there was no 'upgrading' being done in my area.

my streamyx started going bad on monday. and not during the maintenance time of 12:00 am to 6:00 am.

i just did a simple test at testmy.net and got this result:

Your connection is: 12 Kbps or 0.01 Mbps
You Downloaded at: 1 kB/s
You are running: 0 times faster than 56K and can Download 1 megabyte in 1024 second(s)

Diagnosis ^info^: May need help : running at only 0.09 % of your hosts average (20.198)
This was tested from a 97 kB file and took 64 seconds to complete

Its kind of weird you know. I can't access gmail or google.com in my office but am able to access these google services and google's homepage at home.

My working place and my house is just 5 minutes walking distance, probably 500m plus minus.

Its so weird. Its about time the government break up all the big monopolies.

Multimedia or video streaming is a BIG JOKE at the current broadband speed we're getting. I'm talking legit stuff..not porn or other nonsense. Honestly I've almost given up and get really mad when I need to view video news.
More of than not..it like takes forever even to load cnn.com!..

HI Jeff

2.42 pm ~ 8-9-06 from Tmn Maluri in Cheras and all connections are normal. Gmail and yahoo messenger working fine.

Jeff,

The international link has been terrible for at least the past couple of months actually and not just the past few days. Then again, it depends on which IP pool you get connected to. Users on the 219.95.x.x range can expect 56kbps speeds – at best – to international websites. That's what I get at home in Sri Petaling, KL. In my office in Kajang however, I am able to connect using the 218.x.x.x, 60.50.x.x or 60.48.x.x IP ranges, all of which are relatively faster. The key word here is 'relatively'.

Jeff,
When you ask people about the performance of streamyx, please do not be surprised at the response. I know you are asking about the performance over the last few days, but judging from the postings, there seems to be a general feeling that streamyx is just not up to the mark.

I have been a business subscriber for the past 3 years and broadband is critical to my business and I must say that the performance has been abyssmal. So much so that my colleagues in Switzerland and New York have been asking questions like "if your ISP is so unreliable (and I am being polite here, the word used was much stronger) how is it that your government is pushing for the multi media super corridor". As a Malaysian I am too ashamed to answer.

It appears to me that all this is due to the complete lack of competetition. Like many other things in bolehland, the government hands out monopolies and guess what, we the consumers get shafted all the time.

As I am unable to attend the "streamyx meeting" in September (because I am a business user), I am all "eyes & ears" as to what divine revelations the powers that be at streamyx will unveil. It will not surprise me one bit if it is the usual platitudes that we are doing our best, service will be enhanced etc etc. Please convey one thing to them - we are in a globalised world and we need to be competetive, if we cannot even get plugged in reliably and securely to the web, we need not even talk about competetiveness, we will be giving a "walk over" to all our neighbours. Instead of "Malaysia Boleh" we will be "Malaysia Tak Bertanding" !!!! Thank you Streamyx for the wonderful service your are providing to the country!!!!

Dont talk about screamingX (streamyx), even leased line with 1.5mbps is slow!

I concur with Benny. It's been going on for months and each time I called TMnet Streamyx support they would say that it is 'normal', that there is only a certain level of service guarantee they provide depending on the level of congestion at TMnet. They blame the slow speed on P2P traffic. Sigh. Well at least they acknowledge they have a problem.

Anyway, I'm in Cheras, about 500m from a CO and notice downloading is horrendous now - 30 MB can take up to a few hours to finish (average 5KB/sec), a 44Kbps BBC stream will generally retrain down to 6Kbps and stay there, and forget YouTubing. Pages stall so often while loading I am afraid of paying my bills online for fear of not getting through.

BTW, is it true their International bandwidth is still at 200Mbps?

Streamyx had been, at best, patchy during the past 1 week, here in Tmn Pelangi, JB (both in my office and at home). TMnet Speedometer shows 800-900kbps download speed, but it took forever to download some files from international sites.

Often the webpage would just stop loading halfway and needs several refreshes to finish loading. At this rate it might not be worth it to maintain these Streamyx connections for the kind of money paid.

Yesterday I was almost unable to do anything at all on the internet. Ironically, service improved *slightly* after the clock passed midnight.

On the other hand, a friend of mine told me that his Streamyx has been unbelievably fast as of late. Odd...

Hi Jeff!

I seem to be rather lucky though...surfing from Kelana Jaya. However I did experience more timeouts earlier in the day. Speed seems to be normal/okay now. Below is the test from testmy.net:

Your connection is: 562 Kbps or 0.56 Mbps
You Downloaded at: 69 kB/s
You are running: 10 times faster than 56K and can Download 1 megabyte in 14.84 second(s)

Test Time:: 2006/09/08 - 1:33am
Test Browser and OS info: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)
Test ID: K8ZCHL6A0 (if this is a screenshot go to testmy.net to see if this is fake)
Diagnosis ^info^: Awesome! 20% + : 31 % faster than the average for host (88.207)
This was tested from a 579 kB file and took 8.442 seconds to complete

Although, timeout and packet loss does happen when pinging jeffooi.com, redesignmalaysia.com, google.com, yahoo.com, and nearly everything.

Have also linked to this post from redesignmalaysia.com, together with a few other links to forums where users are discussing this as well.

Hah...mine started to slag yesterday. Got the occasional time-out and no data messages.

jeff, i think the problem of difficulty downloading gmail has nothing to do with streamyx. i had been having this problem a long time ago. it happened when i was using jaring too. at the mypdacafe forum i notice a lot of people having this problem with gmail too. maybe it's google's problem.

Hi Jeff,

Just did a test like Josh Lim.

Kokster99...

Those are pretty horrible test results! Which area are you in?

bad for me too.

here's hoping that the UPGRADE really means UPGRADE, not some stupid bandwidth throttling system.

I thought I got a DOS attack!

but then, went to the TMNet website and they said there were some upgrading works starting midnight to dawn.

can't even blog properly in The Star!! Argh! 50 bucks down the drain!!

I am surfing in Melaka now since 4.15 am. No problem accessing google & wikipedia. Download speed is 291 kbps & upload is about 90 kbps tested on internetfrog.com

to be fair to streamyx, at this point of writing, their service in Taman Segar Cheras is back to normal and i must say the download speed is very much faster! i am hoping this speed stays

I am here in the US: Did the same speed test: the results..

Hi Guys,

If DSL is that bad how fast is the dialup?

Exactly what is being upgraded? Upgrades, here if any normally take place between 2.am and 5 am here..

There are no problems with GMail or any other popular sites.

The slogan Malaysia gift to the world SHOULD be removed when there is such sub-standard. By the way city I live in is about the size of Ipoh..

Hi Josh,

I'm staying in Bandar Sri Damansara, the older industrial side not the residential side.

hi jeff,

Just out of curiosity, I tried the tmnet speedometer again and it reported 844.88 kbits from its brickfields server. however i got this insult from testmy.net and it's almost the same with my XP machine at home:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Download Connection is:: 26 Kbps about 0.03 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Download Speed is:: 3 kB/s

Mine is shocking just about everyday, when I get a 350ms ping to US I'm happy...although that's not actually good..

It makes me happy as I usually average about 700ms..

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
