Farewell to the Chief ( 1 )
September 3, 2006
Paying last respect
Yesterday, we bade farewell to the Reverend, Venerable Dr K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera, who is many passionately remembered as the Chief.

Due to space constraints, Dewan Asoka was reserved fro the dignitaries and the maha sangha, whiledevotees and laypeople follwed the eulogy in the name of the Chief from closed circuit TV outside.

From all over the world

I am just curious why are there elephant tusks (hopefully I am wrong!)being part of the decoration in such occasion?
JEFF OOI says: Frankly, I don't know the significance behind the symbolism, can anyone please helpenlighten us? There are not real ivory when I touched them.

Jeff, must have been quite a rush to post this blog... :)
JEFF OOI says: Sorry, lack of sleep, really. Was sorting out the pictues till 4.30am this morning. Kinda zombie now. Spelling corrected. Thanks.

Well, I totally appreciate your rushing to put the photos. It was a tiring day yesterday, thunderstorms, jam and all. Reached home about 10pm. I didn't stay back in Semenyih. Did you?
JEFF OOI says: We were there until 8.30pm, I needed the night shot of the cremation, though soaked and drenched, the camera and lenses were well-wrapped, thanks to Brother Ghim. Lost our way on the journey home. Got back by 11pm.

Glad to be of little service to you, Jeff, but it is incomparable to the services you have done for our society at large and nation.
You have covered this solemn event from the beginning till the end exquisitely and I am recommending the website to my friends who missed the event.
Sadhu X 3 to you.
P.S. If you're ever stranded in Kajang/Semenyih again, give me a call.

Even if the elephant is a revered animal in India, I find it distasteful to display tusks (Jeff said that they are not real) of elephants esp in occasion like this. Buddhist does not believe in killing and thus the display of elephant tusks seems to imply otherwise. Also in the current environment, killing animals for their properties is disgusting.
