COBRA... A little sports club in Malaysia

Head honchos at the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), an icon of Malaysia's decades-old malaise in sports, should sit tight and find out how COBRA enters its 37th world-class tournament without much government funding.

COBRA, short for Combined Old Boys Rugby Association, was founded by some 10 people in 1967, with almost 50% of the founders now having permanently retired. Dead.

However, the annual COBRA 10s is now so famous across the world, for many reasons. It has the support from the sponsors, participation of world-class teams, spectacular display of rugby in Malaysia, lucrative prize money totaling US$33,000, and perhaps the powers of the international media.

Today, though rugby appears to be a dwindling sport in Malaysia, with the exception of the Police Academy and some diehard boarding schools, the COBRA tournament is touted by many as the “World’s Premier Rugby 10s”.

Our photography portal LensaMalaysia.com secured some Media passes for the event. Over the weekend, with full access given through the Media pass, some senior LensaMalaysia moderators went on the pitch, taking along some budding photography enthusiasts. All aimed to gain exposure and sharpen their shooting skills.

As for me, I harbour this sentiment of telling you this little story, that COBRA is but a small sports club that can hold international class tournament, year in year out, without much subsidy and fanfare from the government and its dignitaries.

I skipped the Day One tournament on Friday, as my work schedule did not permit I cover the schools event. Day Two, the preliminaries, saw a heavy downpour and we were all drenched. Day Three was sunshine. Here are some low-resolution pictures to share with you. You may catch the higher-resolution pictures on this thread at LensaMalaysia web forum

It was my second attempt to take sports pictures (the first one for GT Rally recently was a total wash-out), so I apologise for the flaws in my images. Shooting this fast-paced game was a big challenge for a novice like me.

A 10s game lasts 20 mins except for the final, which lasts 30mins. Played fast and furious, it is more exciting than the popular game of 7s.

COBRA 10s this year attracted a total of 16 teams from 9 countries, including 4 top local teams Top colours from Malaysia came from Sandakan Eagles who beat COBRA at the Plate Finals.

Had listen to the radio advert for this tournament. Something like "Come see players from Australia, Britain..bla bla".
Nothing about coming to see the Malaysian players :)

ala i wanted to go! tell la earlierrrrrrrrrrr

Great shot Jeff!!!!
The local team COBRA,NS are at par with thier forign counter parts. Few years back,STAROBA Orange beat the British Army. The Brits was so not happy and demanded a re-match in the UK.
Anyway, apart from COBRA 10's,Jonah Jones is another international rugby event which draws a lot of crowd.
Though rugby is 'not there yet' like football, but its going in that direction, without much support from the goverment though, but support from ruggers themselves.

Hi Jeff

What a bright & breezy story to drive the Monday blues away!

I read the newspapers and as usual the depressing news of accidents, conflicts and deaths make me want to curl up and call in sick.

Hey hey hey young man... NOT BAD at all! Keep it up! When are you buying a 300 f2.8? :-)

Good Stuff ...

some of your shots are pretty good actually... better than the touristy one you posted before ;-P
this is when you really appreciate the high fps of your camera isnt it?
p.s. a couple of your lensa mods are like: wow!

Aiya, Jeff shows your little travel experience. Jems of the natural world should always be kept secret. Otehrwise very soon it gets colonised by the human kind. Just like that jems like COBRA and the tournaments they organise should be kept out of view of our lack lustre politicians. Now that you pecah this lobang you can expect Azalina to be hanging around these rugby boys so she can make some kind of claim or other..and soon you will have half of the UMNOputras wanting a bit of the COBRA shine. But then again Azalina would sure fit into the locker room with all the boys there won't she.

I was there! If only I knew you were there snapping away, ah well. An afternoon well spent, pity the beer ran out before the finals. A member of one of teams, Brit, I think, stripped himself completely naked(apparently, they do this every year) - officials had to tell him to put his clothes back on, which he did, then proceeded to throw up in a plastic bag several times while still talking to his team mates. Then continue to drink more. Almost as if he was making room for more beer.

Pix are brilliant.

The reasons that Cobra is so successful is simple.
1. There are no politicians involved
2. It is run by people who love the game
3. The people running are clean

Thanks for the post on Cobra.

I am familiar with the early years of the formation of COBRA during the late sixties back in MU. Those were the days when the MU campus was truly a breeding ground of multiracial understanding, cooperationb. COBRA was formed in that great environment.

Unfortunatly, MU became a political playground of UMNO and UMNO Youth in the mid to late 70s onwards.

One of the founders of COBRA was Dr Chan Oon Leng and several ex graduates of MU etc. Amon them were the Pestana brothers ie Brian and Dennis Pestana, Chong Kai Yong, Dr Ronnie Yeo, Wan Ibrahim, Kamarul Arifin, etc all who had played for Malaysia.

COBRA was a really multi-racial, non-political body, all for the sake of a the game of rugby.

Rugby is a game where you put your whole body on the line, where you have to think of our players each time you throw the ball to him, so that you don't send him to hospital with broken ribs and broken ankles or with bleeding nose.

Rugby is a ruffian's game played by gentlemen while soccer/football is a gentleman's game played by ruffians.

If you want to understand the meaning of brotherhood, concern for your fellow team player, whether he is Malay, Chinese or Indian, rugby is the game to play. In rugby, if you try to be a hero and a selfish player, not only your team will lose, but you may land yourself in hospital.

The meaning of team-spirit and team player, where your fragile body is put upfront to be bashed for your team, is best emphasised in rugby than in any other sport.

COBRA survived because of the passionate love of the game by the players. People volunteered time and money.

SuperShyteStirrer,

Menteri YB Dato’ Seri Haji Azmi bin Khalid was a rugger and a patron for
COBRA. Y.A.M. Tunku Tan
Sri Imran Ibni Tuanku
Jaafar is also one of the
patron.

COBRA is being
funded sponsored by IJM
and the CEO Datuk Krishnan
Tan was a rugger.
It does help that [ DELETED ]
bags some goverment
projects.

JEFF OOI says: You got it right that Krishnan Tan was a rugby player. But do you have any evidence that can prove [ DELETED ] had obtained some government projects because of [ DELETED ]'s involvement in COBRA as you have claimed? If you have, please disclose. If you don't have evidence to back yourself up, then your remarks are defamatory. Please clarify within 24 hours from the timestamp you posted your remarks. This is serious allegations you made in my blog and I want to hold you soley responsible if any law has been violated.

Sorry to burst your bubble, things are
not super shiny after all.

If you do not know Krishnan Tan, please don't cast such wicked aspersions. I believe he has considerably more integrity in his little finger than a lot of our high flying businessmen. He has also been passionate about Rugby for many many years, and if he is able to provide sponsorship for the sport because his company is doing well, then that is great. Don't assume the reverse - that becaue he supports the COBRAS that he is getting good projects. He is a hard worker, and hands on. I agree with Jeff. Please check your facts before you write.

a small correction...
than a lot of our high flying businessmen have in their whole bodies.

parameswara

you are full of bile. what you have written is an insult to Dato KT and his fellow Cobra members

If you know Dato KT and his background I am sure you will feel humbled. Even when he assumed the mantle of IJM people assumed that he was related to the original founders - which he is not.

BTW I think he is the only captain of a contruction / infra based PLC who is not an engineer. Go figure this one out.

please take a few days off next year around this time to spend time with the Cobra people and observe how they volunteer their services to the club and indirect to the country without asking for favour.

If you can't, I will be glad to be your host and buy you beers during the 10's.

Finally, if anyone want to see a good example of how Malaysians can work together and enjoy themselves while putting up a world-class event, do sign up as a volunteer next year.

peace
