After Raya...
Operators of five privatised highways are now asking the government for toll increase, and they are

Cost-of-Living is certainly getting uncontrolled in modern days, where every nook and corner for profit-making will not be let up by people who stalk opportunities. It happens everywhere, and the devils are easy to find, as was said in this pantun found in the September 1958 edition of Dewan Bahasa:
Cak gelucuk,
Gali-gali ubi;
Di mana kayu bengkok,
Di situ musang jadi.
So, is life getting tougher? There is an old pantun culled from the July 1959 edition of Mastika:
Bun tari bun,
Anak ayam bulu balik;
Dari perintah Jepun,
Kita makan ubi keledek.
Works Minister S Samy Vellu gave some snippets yesterday in preparing you to get ready.

Highway without toll would be like MRR2. Crack here crack there.... jem sana jem sini.
Somehow I believe toll rate increase just like chicken nd chili price increase. Increase in demand without same proportion increase in supply sure cause price increase. As more and more new car hit the road, somehow we need some kind of mechanism to control the number of car on the road.
Toll and petrol price are part of the mechanism. As a result, people drive car when it is nescessary. Take public whenever possible. Car-pool when got chances.
Imagine highway without toll, the damn road will be crawling with lorries and old car, increasing chances for road accident and traffic congestion.

I suppose this is called the duit raya of the Rakyat to become the duit raya of the few toll owners.
With so many sweet heart deals that we the road users have no role or chance in deciding, who need to wait 300 odd days to celebrate the once a year Raya day ? It is a Raya day, celebrate everday by the few.
p/s.. If operating a toll road is a form of business with the usual risks, economic downturns and what not, how come then we do not have any "failed or bankcrupt toll road operators who lose millions" ?
With the guarantee and sure-to-get toll increases or automatic & compulsory compensation by the Govt, who will fail ?
Well done, good job, rent seekers. It is really a BUSINESS UNUSUAL that guarantees profits at all time, no matter what happen. Incredible, only happens in Malaysia.

"meyour" - "Highway without toll would be like MRR2. Crack here crack there.... jem sana jem sini" and "Imagine highway without toll, the damn road will be crawling with lorries and old car"?
One BIG problem with the toll highway system is the fact that inspite of the having to pay the rather high tolls, motorists still have to suffer through mailes and miles of bumper to bumper jams.
Examples: The LDP near Kelana Jaya LRT station and near Damansara Peradana turn-off every rush-hour on weekdays. The NSE near Nilai most weekends after lunch-hour.
So does your argument hold water?
There have been reports that some highways are already way above their design capacities. Which in practical terms means that the jams are to be expected, but also that the concessionaires are collecting revenues many times above what they had projected.
I think it may be safe to assume that the original (much lower) projected revenues had been used during negotiations which led to the toll consession contracts, and the increases incorporated in the contracts.
So why are motorists now made to pay the high toll rates plus face the ever increasing rates when the actual revenue fugres are likely to be much higher than the amounts used in contract negotiations? Why has the govt not used that fact to leverage a lower increase or even a freeze on increases? (I think it would be too much to hope for a drop in rates even if the figures support such a move.)
Why has Samy Vellu said something like "the govt will compensate the concessionaires - either with a hugh chunk of the rakyat's money [which Samy somehow spins as 'govt funds"] or an extension of the consession period - so that there is no or lower increase in toll"?
The whole kettle of fish stinks mightily.
And the rakyat still have no access to the toll contracts.
Perhaps Dr M, in his current war against "lack of transparency" and alleged crony deals involving the PM's family, would care to also champion the revealing of the toll concession contracts signed during his time as PM.

we can all blame the toll operators for the hefty increase.
But lets ask this question. WHO APPROVED THE LOP SIDED CONTRACTOR with HEFTY INCREASES up to 42.9%???!!! WHO? EPU or Samy's ministry? or Dr.M???
The govt is trying to divert the attention. If we don't pay it, the govt will use tax payers money to pay.So how Samy Vellu?

Know what, Jeff? You have made me look again at pantuns and I must say that they are a delight to read. Thanks so much for opening my eyes. It has aways been there and yet I could not see.
I have alot of catching up to do, and I'll be visiting a few bookshops ASAP to get me some books on pantuns.
TQ

Selamat Hari Raya, folks. This is what your government send you as a gift for the festival.
My guess is, they will approve the increase sooner, most probably within this yr or next. They can't do it too late, especially too near to next election. The sooner the price increase, the sooner the rakyat will forget about it and still stupidly vote for BN in next election.

(meyour) If you rely too much on public transport to work, you would have been sacked from your work place long time ago for being a habitual late comers.
