'Using him'

An excerpt of the Annuar Zaini interview with PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi regarding interested parties who may have used the son-in-law to achieve favours:

Q: Is there a possibility of him being used by interested parties?

A: Maybe. Maybe there are people who want to use him. These people will look for everyone to use. They will look for the son, for the son-in-law, for the wife, everyone. They will look for your best friends, look for your schoolmates, look for the kampung people that I know. In Kepala Batas, all kinds of people have gone down there.

But what is important here is that I’m the one who will make the decision.

Food for thought, layers of food for thought. (See Aisehman.)

Cut, next scene. "Focus on the friends of KJ instead, who want to use him". Take one. Anyone?

reminds me of GW Bush's famous quip: " I AM THE DECIDER "

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/18/rumsfeld/

when faced with criticisms, the best thing a 'leader' can do is to stomp the foot down and assert authority.

AAB,do watch out.

The famous son-in-law of Taiwan President Ah Bai should serve as a shining example for you.

I believe that you are sincere in saying so,but action speaks louder than words.

AAb said that KJ secured a loan but he didnt say from who. Well, dont forget that Kamaluddin is a millionaire and he can easily gv KJ that amt of money. IS there any wrong in that if he did? I dont think so. If I like you I can even give you free money. So, we shld now look at anohter angle of the ECM-Libra deal and not focus on how KJ got his money.

And in the case of being used, then I am wary if this KJ has more powers later on as he will be forever indebted to this person who is "using" him now. He will be a puppet on a string and it wont be good for the rakyat shld this happens.

If AK hasdeclared that he got a loan from his family members, such as brother-in-law,that is a different matter.and I would definitely shut up.

But he cliamed that he borrowed, and now it appears that he borrowed from the company to buy into the company, that is a different story.

TDM,pl push on with this, and come to the bottom of the matter, till the end of the world.

perhaps this is the time to discuss, debate and find an agreement on what are acceptable and what are not acceptable for sons and son-in-laws (known as s/sil henceforth) to do.....
of course, aab, ka and kj didn't invent all this. it was common practice during dr.m's rule. i would go as far as saying it's common practice in many asian countries - prc, taiwan, korea, japan, for e.g.
it's why many of our ministers dare to say "i am not corrupt", "i never give contract to my family".
of course they are many 10% (or more) ministers and gov officers at all levels from the lowest ranking polis up who take cash in return for favours. but i do believe there are many (may be even most) politicians who DO NOT take money. seriously. and it's because that is the smart thing to do.
however, as soon as your father-in-law becomes pm or cm or mb, very soon people will come make friend with you and invite you as business partner. no money? no problem, i can lend you. no collateral? no problem lah - i trust you. to businessmen, this is investment. of course, like all investments, it may or may not bear fruits. and the returns may vary from juicy insider stories about where the gov is planning to develop next, or having the permit/approval signed solely on "face-value" only, or an out-of-jail card in case the tahi hit the fan - since the s/sil is a director/shareholder, the co may be seen as "untouchable". if they are really lucky, they may end up with some gov or glc projects without bid! or may be even get bailed out, if the bottom falls out! which, i suspect the current pm is implying the previous pm's son may have benefited from...
there are the very very rare cases where the ministers and his/her family will refuse such apparently not illegal and profitable relationships. ask yourself, will you refuse such attractive offer if you are kj?
if you'll take my word for it. i was offered a rather expensive gift by a supplier when my son was born. i returned the gift to the supplier with thanks and informed him that i unfortunately have to report the gift offer to the company as per regulations. you can imagine how unpopular one can become with that kind of don't-give-face actions and it may even be bad for one's health if one is seen as a potential blocker or being on the competitor’s pay. but i guess it's ok for me, since i'm widely known as a not-very-nice-person. and of course i don't have to run for some youth chief position.
now, we need to decide if this kind of "common practice" is acceptable. apparently the pm feels that it's common also, and is unavoidable. but i wish the pm to know that, to me at least, it is not unacceptable. it is not gray. it's black and white. don't let it happen in your family. stop it in your party and in bn. if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. only then will you have credibility to deal with low ranking officers who take 30 ringgit a pop – peanut!

Danger! Danger! Avoid! Avoid!

He elegantly avoided answering the question altogether. Maybe? Couldn't just say yes? Why give us a hypothetical answer and in the end say you are the who decides everything. Its like setting up a straw man argument.

Abdullah said Kamaluddin had to find projects overseas because he did not want to linked with his father.

"If people ask why go overseas, he (Kamaluddin) will say father (Abdullah) is the prime minister, it's difficult to earn a living locally. His contracts, his business, 80 per cent are from overseas. That is his livelihood," he said. Bernama http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v3/printable.php?id=212722

Can someone tell us if the below GLC-linked projects are considered as overseas project?

So who is using who now?

an excerpt from http://www.aisehman.org/archives/2006/08/kacau.html

(1) KTM Bhd
Scomi Group Bhd is believed to have won a contract worth as much as RM50 million from KTM Bhd, the national railway company, to overhaul and maintain its wagons, sources said yesterday.
Mail Money was told that the contract is for five years, and will involve the maintenance and overhaul of as many as 1,000 wagons.

Scomi did not respond to questions sent by Mail Money over the last two weeks, but a senior executive confirmed the award of the contract.

The contract was awarded last year by KTM, after it had invited several companies to participate in a closed door tender exercise. [Malay Mail]

Isn't KTM a GLC?

(2) Prasarana Negara Bhd
Scomi Group Bhd will submit a bid by the end of March for a contract worth some RM120 million to make body parts for about 400 buses for state-owned Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd, sources said.
Scomi is also pitching for another job from a big GLC (government-linked company) to manage its fleet of 6,000 vehicles. [Business Times]

Isn't Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd a GLC?

(3) TNB Bhd
Scomi Marine Bhd has received a letter of intent from TNB Fuel Services Sdn Bhd for a coal shipment contract for three years from Oct 1, with an option to extend for another two years, the company said.
Scomi Marine told Bursa Malaysia on April 14 that under the contract, it would be required to transport 500,000 tonnes (with 20% variation) of coal from Australia, Indonesia and South Africa yearly.

It said TNB Fuel Services would determine the actual quantity of coal to be transported and from which country upon finalisation of the contract. [The Edge Daily]

Isn't TNB a GLC?

(4) Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn Bhd
Scomi Group Bhd, an oil services company, has won a contract from Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn Bhd to provide drilling fluids and other services for exploration works in Block 1, offshore Turkmenistan.
... it is estimated that the contract would contribute about RM57 million a year to the revenue of Scomi, it said in a statement yesterday. [Business Times]

Isn't Petronas a GLC?

Scomi is one of the few malaysian companies that are actually doing well and managed well ..hence i dont see any reason why they cant get any government contracts...technically pak lah is right..they have NOT been getting any local project becoz of personal favours...but they could get projects going forward becoz the are technically competent ...what we need to push for is transparency in selection...

Besides that...nothing wrong with scomi ...if they can deliver give it to them...better then some useless class F contractor who takes a downpayment and doesnt finish the job!

goks...

is it fair for scomi to get all the projects mentioned by sonicwall?

You mean to say that Scomi is the only well managed company in Malaysia?

Scomi is the only technically competent company to handle all the projects mentioned by sonicwall??

You have to give better argument to support Scomi.

Otherwise this is just seen like history repeating itself..cronies and relatives getting big fat contracts..same as the previous PM's time

I think the question is about the misleading statement being said by Pak Lah and not about the capabilities of the companies in question.

From excerpts of the interview in this post, Pak Lah did not answer the question but totally avoided from saying No or Yes. He absolutely did not confirm if there was a motivation for parties to favour KJ because of his relationship with him

I agree with goks.

The key word is transparency.

If one were to consider 5C's besides Capacity to carry out a contract, I think Characters which include reputation, track record, management is also important.

Yes, one can argue there are many others with good characters, then no need to talk lor, if just debate for the sake of debating.

thank you sonicwall for the list of projects.
may i suggest that the list would be even more useful and informative if you could indicate how each of the projects was awarded:
- single sourced?
- lowest bid?
- awarded despite not being lowest bid?
- etc.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
