Limitation on speech?

Incidentally, we have scheduled today's Freetalk on Freedom of the Press much earlier. But Marina Mahathir's Musing yesterday, Limitation on Speech, was hilariously coincidental. Quote:

I’ve never felt constrained in talking about whatever got my goat that fortnight, except by the need to be civil and my 800-word limit. Not everyone would agree that I’m always civil; certainly my editors have been known to edit out a line or two where they thought I have been a bit too irreverent about some people in authority, particularly those inclined to wear white robes.

But now I don’t know what to write about. I had wanted to write about how the environment in our local schools is turning out little racists (including my daughter) but I guess I can’t because that’s sensitive. I thought also of writing about how I’ve become addicted to reading blogs recently but then lately, the Internet and the blogosphere particularly have been deemed seething hellholes of lies and misinformation so I can’t talk about that either, at least not in the bastion of truthfulness, the mainstream media. [...]

So what can I talk about? I don’t really know anymore. I guess the only safe things to talk about these days are cooking, celebrity gossip and fashion perhaps. None of which I am interested or good at writing about.

Stay tuned, our Freetalk podcast for tomorrow is: "Clamp-down on bloggers?"

What's alarming is that my daughter is also coming home from her national school to tell me about certain kinds of situation (of which we can't talk about here) creating mindsets of which no amount of NS training will set right later on. If people of Marina"s calibre feel afraid to discuss these issues, I wonder where we stand... The ground seems to be running out.

Why don't we test the syetem and tell us all about your daughter's problem in schools. If you got religious /racial problems, blurt it all out. otherwise the idiots that run this country thinks everything is alright. It is not racial/religious sensitive to tell us your problem with other people of different ethnic background.

i LOVE marina... allow me, what u left out:

"I’d like to talk about my religion and how self-appointed defenders have painted it as one that so lacks compassion, ignores justice and fairness and promotes inequality between men and women and between those professing it and those not. But then some people have cited me as one of those who really should not be allowed to talk because apparently I give the country a bad name. I guess people who storm forums, write untruths, scream and shout at people with different opinions give a better image of our beloved country."

if u r our prime minister, marina, i'll b willing to die for u!! (ooops, another police report???)

Juslo,
Don't worry, you're in the clear..But if you had said "Marina, i'll b willing to get shot for u" then u might have a case to answer!!

But, since u brought it up..would it be possible for Malaysia to ever have a woman PM? Sorry, if i'm diverting from the blog topic...

marina for PM!
marina for PM!

in our dream....
it's possible in indonesia
it's possible in pakistan
it's possible in bangladesh
it's possible in turkey
but apparently many men in malaysia do not have to balls to work under a woman

Mithos,

thanks for your clarification, i feel better now... ,P

female PM - please, don't make me weep... i'm a man, but i certainly hope so. i think it's more meaningful to talk about what we can do to make that happen, rather than asking a general question of whether it is possible or not.

fundamental respect and equality for every individual and group, etc are what we need, the environment in which fair, just, intelligent and honest people can become leaders. when that happens, it no longer matters what's the gender (or lack of... anyone??) of our top leaders.

but last time i checked, no political system on earth conforms to that description. so i'm not going to blame Malaysia for not being one.

never mind lar...

oh, here's "The follower", another great one from YAB PM No.6 in case any well-read Malaysian didn't get to read it:

(sorry jeff, for 'hijacking' your blog and turning it into the unofficial 'Marina for PM' homepage...)

"I remember when there were riots over Salman Rushdie’s book The Satanic Verses, President Benazir Bhutto commented wryly that the people who were dying over the book were those who would never have read it, or possibly even heard of it if someone hadn’t whipped them into a frenzy. A similar situation arose with the cartoons. As insensitive as they were, they were still not worth dying over.

The point is that people’s impressions of a religion are often related to the behaviour of its adherents. Some religions are thought of as simply kooky because its followers behave strangely. Some are viewed as benign and peaceful because its followers resolutely will not harm a fly.

But when people, supposedly in the name of religion, riot, burn and kill, it can’t help but give the impression of a religion that advocates this, no matter how much we point out that nowhere in religious texts itself does it say you should do this. And unfortunately we get the whole spectrum, from men who publicly insult women on a daily basis without censure to the real crazies."

from: Marina's loyal follower

Marina has always written her thoughts and views as all Malaysians should, as a citizen of a mutiracial and multireligious Malaysia. But how many are there like her? Off hand I can think of RPK.Moreover how many get the space to air their grown up and matured views in the mainstream media . I have no doubt in my mind that there are thousands and thousands of them among the Malays who think like Marina and RPK but are silent for lack of space and probably afraid being called all sorts of names.

Marina has always written and aired her views as all citizens of multiracial, multireligious Malaysia should, grown up, matured and broadminded. There must be thousands and thousands among the Malays(I am not being racial here) who think like Marina and for lack of space in the mainstream media and being afraid of branded with all sorts of names and the political situation being what it is, are keeping silent. But for Malaysia's
sake, for its unity and wellbeing, the silent, I do not know whether they are in the minority or majority, must speak up and form the core of our country's leadership. Off hand,I can think of Dr Syed Hussain and RPK as falling under this category. Will the day come? Can Malaysians dream? Incidentally,Jeff, you may try posting Dr. Azmi Sharom's piece in today's Star"PLEASE EXCUSE ME WHILE I LAUGH".It is very relevent to what Marina wrote.

there I do not know if the espe

Lady PM?

How about the fat lady as someone has suggested in this blog, who is an expert on AP and a hot one on TDM's list of wanted persons.

Sorry folks,I am still an amateur wit computers

So where have all the moderate Malays gone? Do they truly make up the silent majority? If someone with Marina's clout and influence is afraid to touch on the subject and go against the "self-appointed defenders" then what hope is there for the average moderate Malay to do anything about it, much less speak about it? I apologize if my comments above are deemed insulting to anyone but my interest here is to engage and debate in the interest of our country's future.. Please don't "shoot" me..

To be fair,I just do not feel that the current atmosphere is any worst than what it was during the 22 years when Marina's own father was the big boss-man.

Of course I must acknowledage that AAB came on board with the biggest mandate on the ticket of transparency, perhaps that is difference.

the moderate malays need to get organised and speak out in a loud voice.

now, the public sphere is mainly monopolised by 2 malay voices, the right wing racists (UMNO & co) and the right wing fanatics (PAS & co).

feeble moderate voices like sisters in islam have limited agenda and don't seem to have a wide enough range of interests. whether keadilan is moderate or not has never been clear.

at the end of the day, all moderate malays should understand and realise that if you want freedom and the space to live like a civilised and enlightened people, you got to pay/fight for it - not just by writing articles once in a fortnight (like YAB PM6?) but you got to do it full-time: because the enemies of freedom ARE doing it full-time, aggressively and purposefully, which make their voices appear to be much more popular and 'normal' compared to the moderates, in the eyes of the masses.

the voices of moderation have been cleverly made to appear to be 'extremists'. 1 day, who knows, a state law will cleverly bypass the federal constitution and bans the any malay from speaking out, in the name of "the malays' supreme law". and then... SORRY, WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?? HOW COULD THIS BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN, HAAH?? (can i see the replay, please...?)

well, the only people who could answer - and deal with - that are the moderate malays... (well, if they still care.)

the rest of us can only fight to protect our own limited space of freedom. if we try to speak up for our fellow malaysians, the right wingers will say we are kepoh.

eh boss, kopi-oh satu...!! (tata)

Marina as Malaysian PM?
very good idea.
Why not?

For me, whoever are they...
shall choosen by Rakyat so that they might work for Rakyat, and if they cant perform well... the Rakyat have the right to bring him/her down, anytime.

The old car needs not just a new (good) driver.
Change it

Do we really need a PM choosen by Allah?.

those who think PAS is fanatic is paranoid type, or coward type

Marina's way of thinking make her can't survive in any political party in Malaysia. Except DAP and keadilan.
Chances for her to be our future PM is very very dim

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
