Dr Mahathir returns

You have to praise The Star and Oriental Daily News for the guts to report, each complete with a picture, on the public's reception given Dr Mahathir's on his return from overseas yesterday.

Umno-controlled papers from The NSTP and Utusan Malaysia groups have blacked-out the news. National news agency Bernama, with Abdullah's confidant and speechwriter Annuar Zaini as the chairman, also ignored the news completely. (UPDATES: The NST website has uploaded the Dr Mahathir story -- 500 words with a picture -- when I revisited its website as at 13:06hr, while Berita Minggu has a 200-word story wrapedin 8 paragraphs.)

DrM01_060722.jpg

The first thing he exposed was that he was prevented from meeting up with Umno club members in London. Quote:

[...] tak payahlah nak takut sangat kat saya… saya bukan nak makan orang…

Dr Mahathir was asked whether his criticism of the Abdullah administration all boils down to a difference of opinion.

He said no. He said it's a matter of issues. Quote:

It is not a matter of me going to see him (Abdullah) and shaking his hand and everything is over. It’s a matter of (differences on) issues. The issues must be tackled. Why did you (Abdullah’s government) offer one million cubic metres of sand (to Singapore)?

The following is an abstract of Dr Mahathir's 10-minute speech while standing through the sunroof of a four-wheel-drive yesterday morning, as reported Malaysiakini's Andrew Ong and Kuek Ser Kuang Keng

But a better rendition is in his Kedahan Malay, as reported in the AgendaDaily. Quote:

Soalan wartawan: Jadi Tun akan teruskan?

Dr Mahathir: Saya fikir ini negara bebas... katanyalah... negara bebas…tapi Kalimullah (Timbalan Pengerusi akhbar NST) control …

Jadi saya nak bercakap... bercakaplah…

No doubt, he knows where his target is. The video-clips of Dr Mahathir's july 22 speech can be downloaded from Generasi-M.com.

Malaysiakini, July 22, 2006

I didn’t think that one day I'll get such a reception [crowd claps and cheers wildly]. But when I was prime minister, there were more people (to receive me) [crowd laughs].

I am no longer allowed to meet people. What are they so afraid of? [crowd shouts: ‘not scared, not scared’]. Why are they scared of me? It’s not that I can do anything [crowd laughs].

When I stepped down (as PM), I no longer get any praises. Back then, it was not just praises, but also great admiration. Now, when I wanted to speak to some people in England - cannot. I want to speak to former elected representatives in Kelantan, even that is banned.

They tell me not to speak to opposition (political) parties or NGOs. But they don’t even give me a chance to speak to Umno people. If you have done is right, what's there to fear?

I don’t ask for much. Just provide answers. Answer the questions, that’s all. We ask them to reveal the proposal by Malaysia to sell sand and give airspace to Singapore. That, they did not reveal.

What was revealed were my letters (to Singaporean officials), which didn’t contain much.

I was in London when the letters were apparently declassified. They should declassify lah the letter which I was talking about. I said, ‘Declassify the offer (letter) by Malaysia to sell sand and airspace to Singapore.’ That was not revealed. Not revealed.

Instead, what was brought up were old letters, letters which Singapore had long published. What declassification? It has already been declassified (by Singapore).

I just want to speak up - give me the chance to say a little bit. You have a lot of spokespersons, here and there, everywhere! [crowd: 'Tak boleh pakai' (useless)]

They can ignore my speeches, just like that. What's there to be afraid of? Give me the chance to speak to people from Umno [crowd cheers].

I'm not allowed to speak to them, (they are questioned) ‘are you trying to meet the Tun?’ Mubarak (Barisan Nasional veterans club) can’t meet me either, tak mubarak (not blessed).

I can also keep bisu (quiet) and ask others to speak for me. But when others spoke against me on his (Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) behalf, he was silent - didn’t say anything.

During the time of (first prime minister) Tunku Abdul Rahman, he wrote to The Star, he wrote books, he wrote all sort of things, he supported those who wanted to dethrone me, but I didn’t do anything to him. He held a gathering of 10,000 people, even that we didn’t stop him.

Can’t people come just to welcome me? I am sad lah.

What is there to hide? If what (you) do is correct, there's no need to hide. Dedahlah (expose it). Show the offer (of sand) to Singapore - that's what I asked for.

We have to understand, we have to follow the way of the government. But don’t just say kami sokong (we support). Don’t sokong everything - mana titah, patih junjung (your wish is my command).

The government is telus (transparent), open. Anyone can say anything. (But) today’s (event) won’t make it to the newspapers. I can talk, (however) I am talking to myself.

I think this is a free country. Tapi (but) (New Straits Times deputy chairperson) Kalimullah (Hassan) controls. Tingkat empat (PM’s advisers) control.

[The following are two questions posed by journalists]

Does everything boil down to a difference of opinion?

No. This is a matter of issues. It is not a matter of me going to see him (Abdullah) and shaking his hand and everything is over. It’s a matter of (differences on) issues. The issues must be tackled. Why did you (Abdullah’s government) offer one million cubic metres of sand (to Singapore)?

Is it true that you offered or not? Itu saya tanya (this was what I asked). I ask for the letter which shows that I approved the sale of sand. There was none. I looked at all the declassified letters [laughs], nothing in the letters said that I gave anything (to Singapore). But (Foreign Minister) Syed Hamid (Albar) apparently said that I ordered (the sale of sand) ... I’ve picked a foreign minister who does not know how to read letters.

What's your greatest fear if these issues are not tackled?

The country is already not doing well. We have lost respect from the developing world. Of course, America, Britain, Singapore and Australia laud us. If we have to ampu (kowtow) them so that they praise us, what for?

Let’s do things right, even if the country that praises us is just Burkina Faso. I’m not looking for people to pat my back.

Dr Mahathir sedia jumpa Pak Lah asalkan jawab persoalan

Bila saya letak jawatan …bukan main lagi puji dulu...sanjung tinggi.

Saya bukanlah nak suruh semua orang berhimpun macam ni…saya cuma nak bercakap saja…bagilah peluang saya cakap sikit.

Oklah saya tak mau ganggu…saya tau la polis kena buat kerja mereka...kita jangan ganggu…kita taulah jadi pegawai kerajaan kita kena buat ikut kerajaanlah…tapi tak payah le kata kami sokong…apa pun kami sokong…

Jadi saya nak bercakap... bercakaplah…

Jeff,

NST Online got report with photo also la.

anyway, Mahathir should realise the taste of his own medicine as well isn't it? And this should go on until his death..not so much to punish him but to be a constant reminder to the current incumbent as to what would be in store for him too. Hopefully, somewhere along the line they might just see the light and change...for the better....Well....I can at least dream about that scenario.

Yes, the controls that he's complaining are the same controls that have been working in favor of him when he was in control. If he thinks that previously he was generous in giving free air-time to Tunku, Anwar etc. then he did it with calculated risk and to his advantage. Similarly, he still have limited air-time now but not to his advantage. Time's up. It's better to enjoy time with your family. The system cannot do evolution hence needs revolution.

As usual Mahathir speaks as if he is the only one speaking the truth. Wonder what happen if there are two Mahathirs - one is at the helm, another is the Mahathir now. Mahathir at helm.. oh well he will continue to make sure all papers, politicians support him (or even hate his enemies), and Mahathir at opposition will continue doing what he is doing now.

No doubt he will continue to fight so that his name is clean again.

Despite of all the politics retoric, I think there are two Mahathir wants from Pak Lah:-

1) Pak Lah can do his own business, but please don't make him look bad.

2) Mahathir's cronies should have a prolonged life, possibly by hooking into Pak Lah's line of cronysm.

(1) is too late. Proton's problems (MV Augusta, more liberal automative market) has been widely known, and despite of whatever - public perception toward Proton (and Mahathir too, if they can read the cues) is bad. (2) is not possible unless Pak Lah want to be a Mahathir's puppet.

I believe most of the human action can be explained by simple logic; so does politicians. Politicians is all about power + money, so this explains it.

TDrM threw a vald proof that whatever letters the gov of today had declassifed for public consumption are nothing new and very vague to explain the issues in hand.

I'm really fed-up with explanation so far given by the half past six ministers in trying to undermine the intelligent public.

PakLah should disclose the truth, the whole truth and nothing less.

1. Was there an offer to sell sand and use of airspace to Singapore?

2. Why all of a sudden YTL is interested to build railroad speed train to Singapore?......is it because of the KTM landbank? Who are going to benefit most? YTL,Scomi or Singaporean?. I don't think its going to be Malaysian public definitely.

What goes around comes around.

Sydehs, as citizen, we are not interested in politics + power. We are interested in our rights as Malaysian. Between Mahathir (now) and Pak Lah, which one is helping the citizen?

There is one possible answer: none of the above.

Also, whoever win, we lost. Because the winner will continue to exercise their power to abuse simply because they are incapable.

There is something wrong in our country today. We don't have a good leader that will bring us out from where we are today. We don't have a good governing system and nobody care to improve it.

In my view,it woudl be silly to wish for a good leader to appear.

From what I observe, politicains all over the world, whether they are from the East,West,or Central, they seem to have only one mission in life:that is to BS big time their people.

Not to mention thsoe despots, dictators from Cuba,N.Korea,Communist China, etc

The only thing that we need is to have a proper system of checks and balances so that they are put under controlfull stop

What Mahathir says of the White Mongrels - USA, Britain, Australia & their henchman S'pore is very true. Under the present leadership, we will lose our national identity as Malaysians in this World. S'pore is being nurtured by the White Mongrels as the future Israel of Asia, as it sits in a strategic position amongst the Islamic Nations. After the Middle East, are we not the only other cluster of Islamic Nations?( Forgive me humble knowledge in demographics if I am wrong). Forget Pakistan & Bangladesh as India will not heel to any of the Mongrels.
Lee Kuan Yew will pimp his nation to be in the good books of the White Mongrels. At least Mahathir is one man who speaks his mine. Long Live Mahathir!!!

What's e big deal about selling sand to singapore? Aftel all malaysia sells , palm oil, and jus about anything to anyone who will buy including malayasian citizenships ?Aren't there millions of foreigners with malaysian indentification in sabah & sarawak. With millions more illegal in malaysia ? What about the many many malaysians that have to migrate to singapore for the lack of opportunities. Arent those bigger issues ?
I like bnaipal, it's no wonder why many in the country remains so xenophobic with no chance of advancement mental or otherwise. Oh yes i am a singaporean btw. :)

I am not interested in whether you are a self-proclaimed Sporean,I read yr message.

I dare predict, knowing TDM style for so many eyars, that it would be a matter of time before AAB becomes a tool of CIA,M5,or whatever.

This is not to say that AAB is an angel, excpet that he has not mastered the FINE art of character assisination.Hope that he does not.

bnaipal,
What a complete load of drival, its time to get a reality check, Mongrel investment into Malaysia is what keeps you in your apartment, allows you to drive your overpriced Proton, provides you with money for your teh tarik. In care you hadn't noticed the world has become interdependent. The old line about a butterfly flaps its wings and you have a storm accross the ocean has never been truer, far sighted leaders have played this to their advantage and grown their country.Unfortunately Malaysia had a leader who was more concerned with massing his own fortune and embarking on empty, to garner support. It's what politicians do, don't you realize you aren't supposed to believe them!! Singapore the new Israel...come on please don't embarrass yourself, your understanding of the world is appalling. How about Central Asia, they have more oil than Indonesia and Malaysia combined, they are overwhelmingly Muslim, and I find genneraly nicer people. The Mongrels (as you put it) couldn't care less, about you it's all about business and money. Sorry your ego has taken over, get your head out from your A%$# and see the world how it really is.
Jeff, you have worked and visited with these mongrels, don't you think they would find it slightly insulting to be viewed this way?

ok, TDM said It’s a matter of (differences on) issues.

it inspired me that, it's rather, It's a matter of, as if, this country has two PM now.

Burkina Faso???

I bet AAB doesn't know where this place is!

bnaipal,

Your hero Dr M spent millions of your hard-earned ringgit to bribe his way to see that the leader of that Mongrel country called USA. Shouldn't you be praising the mongrel countries instead? Gee, you are not toeing the line.

Just in case you make a fool of yourself in this forum in future, please remember what your Great and Beloved Leader Dr M did, instead of what he said.

yeah StanSukhwant ...

the only problem of selling the millions cubic of sand to singapore is that the use of those sand will be use to *landfill* oceans to enlarge their territorial water ...

the territorial water will of course be decided how far away is your territory ... already there is a dispute on the ownership of islands far off Johor/Singapore - if that island is controlled by singapore - think of the potential dispute next time when issues of territorial waters that will mark price worthy commidity such as off-shore petroleum that has not been explored yet ...

before you start shooting from the hip; read also the following; neither AAB/Najib clean ///

Extract :-

"Abdullah gave his talk on 4th October 2002 while Najib, earlier, on 3rd May 2002, where he also met Donald H. Rumsfeld, the US Secretary of Defence. The full text of Najib’s and Abdullah’s speeches can be viewed in the links below.

U.S.-Malaysia Defense Cooperation: A Solid Success Story by The Honorable Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak (Heritage Lecture #742: May 3, 2002)

Strengthening the U.S.-Malaysia Friendship by The Honorable Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi (Heritage Lecture #763: October 4, 2002)

The payment to the Heritage Foundation was handled by Jamaluddin Jarjis and Megat Junid Megat Ayob. But where did the money come from? Who paid Jamaluddin this RM60 million? We know that the money did not come out from Jamaluddin’s or Megat’s pockets. Well, we know who forked out the money but we are not going to reveal his name. We want Mahathir to do that. In fact, we challenge Mahathir to come clean and name this person. And let us see if Mahathir has the balls to do so. Hey, Mahathir is asking Abdullah to explain. “Cakaplah! Sebab apa tak cakap?” said Mahathir (or something to that affect). Well, Malaysia Today too is going to ask Mahathir to do the same. “Cakaplah! Sebab apa tak cakap?”

If you thought Ani Arope was that good in exposing the dirty linen of TDM, why suddenly all these so call linens were hidden ?

something that spindoctors felt that it would also taint the clean linen of the current govt and also the 4th floor ?

cre8tif - before you get creative, try to understand the drift. bnaipal has some neurotic loathing for Mongrel countries and an obssessive love for Dr M. I am just pointing out that Dr M likes to say one thing and do another. My point is don't believe forked-tongue politicians who served their own purpose. It is sad that unthinking people like bnaipal are taken in hook, line and sinker. I mentioned AAB going to Australia for holidays in a separate post, but it was deleted.

Yes by all means mention Syed Hamid and Najib all going to the Mongrel countries. And many of them sending their children to these Mongrel countries for education, and play.

All the more people like bnaipal should wake up his brainwashed mind - the demonizing of the West by Dr M has clearly taken its toll.

You are supporting my case.

Guys

What is the issue here? Don't waste Jeff's webspace arguing something u can argue til the cow come home still no conclusion. We want the current administration to explain and be accountable for the current issues. Whatever have been done is forgone, if you are so concerned, where were you when the things werent right ? Likewise, this is the chance for us to voice out the current issue and don't wait until when it is over then only make noise that the current administration has done many wrong doing. Come on lah guys, if you forever want to look back and blame the pass, how are we going to go forward. I am no supporter of TDM and he might did all the wrong things, but if he has the balls and guts to question the current administration wrong doings, is that a sin? Can't a ex-criminal start preaching gospel and condeming wrong doings?

That is not very logical.

An ex-criminal certainly do have the right to preach gospel but NOT a criminal at large, haha.

I would rather use the freedom of speech analogue to support TDM,not an ex-criminal until he admits it himself

Empty gesture,

You mean Malaysian without white mongrels cannot afford teh tarik & pay for apartment? agreed that every country is interdependent but kinda of absurd with all the natural resources. May be true for singapore though. Which school do you go to? I just want to make sure that I don't send my kid to the same school. Try reading confession of EHM

[b]"Dulu masa Tunku Abdul Rahman dia tulis dalam Star… dia tulis buku… kata macam-macam… dia sokong orang yang nak bagi jatuh saya… saya tak buat apapun kat Tunku Abdul Rahman…"[/b]

I cannot believe this! Has he forgotten that he shut down the Star? And when it was allowed to revive, Tunku's column was axed!

[b]"Datuk Seri Anwar (masa reformasi) boleh ada perjumpaan 10,000 orang… pun kita tak halang… ni nak mai sambut saya balik pun tak boleh… saya sedihlah…"[/b]

Amazing! What were the water cannons and thousands of FRUs and policeman who thrashed the hell out of people who went to see Anwar then?

StanSukhwant,

Just because there are other issues, doesn't mean we should close one eye on issues like selling sand. I don't agree selling sand is a small issue.

Unlike palm oil, which we can grow again, sand on the other hand, once dug of the land, we can't grow our sand. We will have to reduce our land in order to accomodate the huge volume required by Singapore. Futhermore, high export demand will impact local requirements trememdously and burden local citizens.

Bear in mind it's sand, not soil. Soil, we have a lot, but sand, we need it for our local developments.

Society's need for sand
Sand has become a very important mineral for the expansion of society. Not only is it used for glass but more so for making concrete, filling roads, reclamations, building sites, and for renourishing beaches. Each has its own requirements in respect of the quality of the sand.
Although the main constituent of sand, quartz, is found in every soil and locality, it occurs mostly as loam, a mix of sand + silt + clay. Clean sand is indeed a rare commodity on land, but common in sand dunes and beaches. On average, people 'use' over 200kg of sand per person per year. This sand is taken from what are essentially non-renewable resources. - excerpt taken from ">http://www.seafriends.org.nz

Those who thinks selling sand to Singapore is no big deal, those who thinks selling sand to Singapore does not affect your own territory, read this old stories...

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/EG31Ae01.html

"Malaysia gained kudos when it recently (2003) banned the sale of marine sand to Singapore after allegations that the sand being dredged in its own waters for a Johor port development was being covertly shipped to Singapore. Malaysia is officially recorded as importing 600 million cubic meters of Indonesian sand last year (2002) and Jakarta appears ready to go ahead and regulate sea-sand exports there on the government-to-government basis rejected by Singapore."

"Nipah Island, one of 83 border islands serving as points of reference for Indonesia's sea borders, is at the center of Singapore's current dispute with Jakarta. Nipah lies dead in front of the main reclamation work and is now almost submerged. Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Rokhmin Dahuri points out that if the island sinks completely the international boundary between Indonesia and Singapore will change - to Singapore's advantage."

Zagato, You want to discuss idea's or score points with snide comments, granted I was less than complementary about bnaipal, but racism in any form is abhorrent. I agree Malaysia has plenty of natural resouces, but it needs markets to sell to, the same 'mogrels'need Malaysia too, without Malaysia they are unable to sip their coffee or sit around on their'decks'....interdependent...not just one way. Without foreign markets Malaysia could not go it alone, I'm not Malaysia bashing, just an economic truth. A slow down in the Malaysia ecconomy also effects western counties, try to be objective.
Singapore no resources.... I'm not of fan of Singapore but they have developed their knowledge ecconomy far beyond the limits of their island. They offer scholorships to top students from around the region, Malaysia, China, etc (based on merit, great new concept, maybe Malaysia could try?) they attract huge sums of foriegn investment, not as bribe's from mongrel countries, but as investment into the region. Foriegn companies like Singapore because they have a great HR resource and low rates of corruption. (yes its sterile and boring place to live, but business doesn't care about that)Whatever they have lacked in terms of natural resouces they have compensated for elsewhere, not sure why you dislike them so much...maybe a good place to send your kids :) ?

Dr. M has demostrated that "complaining doesn't work in malaysia". Wake up and stop complaining! Do something and stop the bloody complaining.

hehe, thanks for posting this Jeff.

Despite all the criticisms, I have to give it to DM for maintaining checks and balances on our current govt. In this era when almost all the mainstream media is state-controlled, we could really use some fact checking.

The sad thing is DM had to came out from his warmy retirement home to shout out loud. Where's the opposition party yo? We badly need a stronger opposition party.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
