Lovely Friday story
This is the sort of lovely story I like to tell on Friday, after a week of tedious, stressful events.
If you think this photo has come easy, think again.

This photo has actually connected people from Malaysia, New Zealand and the UK over a milieu that spreads across 27 years. (Just look at the car and the numberplate will tell.)
CY Leow, Ben Singh and I decided to publish the photo set to spring a surprise for Sharon in UK, who celebrates her birthday today.
While both CY and I have not met Ben before, my photography sifu has actually photographed Ben's wife in Penang about 27 years ago, With a blast of the past, this blog has put us together.
Many happy returns of the day, Sharon!

Thanks for sharing this picture. Brings back nostalgic memories....
Was Malaysia a great place to live in the 70's?
(I was born in 75, so my memories are the 80's onwards)...I loved the 80's! Now I have migrated overseas and pictures like this make me miss my 'home'

To jigsawpuzzle: I was born in '73. Memory a bit vague on most things, but many are still fresh. I lived in Kuala Lumpur from '75 to '77 (I think) in what is now called Bdr Tun Razak. To me, those were the best days of my childhood. I'm not sure about the whole of Malaysia but I can say that KL, Negri Sembilan, Perak & Penang (my relatives scattered in these states back then) were very pleasant places to be.
I still remember Ampang Park shopping complex as THE place to shop at and have fun (top floor video arcade and mini amusement park).
There was a pasar malam-of-sorts just outside the National Museum, of which the surrounding area was very spacious and relaxing, unlike now, where the building is surrounded by busy, big & dusty roads.
Kampung Baru, believe it or not, did not have any tom yam foodstalls on the roadsides. There was only a sugarcane juice seller at the 'pintu gerbang' into the kampung.
There was a pasar malam almost every night at the Kg. Baru marketplace. Also, there was a public stage with Malay classic theatre plays there regularly.
Jln Tun Razak & Jln Ampang was one of the most pleasant roads to drive on. It was very shady and smooth, and traffic was light, as was everywhere else. Now? No way, man!
Bangsar was a peaceful and quiet residential area with a tiny bit of rubber estate left.
There was no self-service at the petrol pumps and you could still ask for directions from the pump attendant. Now, they're either Banglas, Indons, Nepalis, Myanmars, bla bla bla.
Penang? Still a beautiful and happening place to visit with your family in your non-air conditioned car travelling many hours of trunk roads (no expressways at that time la). The island was in its twilight years of being the 'Pearl of the Orient'.
Where's a time machine when you need one?

To hedonism: In Penang, you can't even display your veggies like that. The moment you lay down the long cabbages (see pix), you will be hit by one or more of those many Honda Cubs zipping around Penang (Boon Siew Honda's stronghold maa)...

CY and Jeff, thanks for sharing wonderful pictures. Remind me of my good old days too, especially the umbrella your model was holding. I still remembered that umbrella was made from oilly paper( not too sure because i wasn't even Std one yet that time). By the way, i was born 1970 and currently residing in our ancestor's hometown since 2 years ago. Have been wanting and searching to get one of this umbrella here but unfortunately, this kind of umbrella is no longer being seen in today's busy and fast growing dragon city."Those were the days"

Dear Jeff,
Man! That photo just brought out a flood of memories for moi. Like Doremon, I too, was born in 1970 and remembered the 70's and 80's as one of the most wonderful time to live in KL. We stayed at Jln Conlay from '71 till '79 and I still remember my dad taking the whole family for breakfast at the Holiday Inn mamak stall; famous for its rojak & mee goreng. We went to Fitzpatrick's occasionally for shopping and of course who could forget Ampang Park with its amusement park on the rooftop. Taxis used to be Peugeots similar to the model in the picture.
I could have gone on and on with my rambling but I'd rather not. Anyway, Jeff could you post more of the 70's photos like that? I want to compile them & create a scrapbook for my children so that they know how it was in the years gone by...

Hi CY, where in Penang was the photo taken? Would it be around the Jln Ayer Rajah or Pulau Tikus area?
Beautiful memories.

Hi Jacky.. those pictures were shot at the side road beside the Pulau Tikus market. Then,Pulau Tikus was so quite and the best place to stay! Not any more! Too crowded and noisy! Can you please send me a mail, your old address not working. Regards - CY
