Peristiwa Kota Baru...
UPDATED VERSION, 15:25hr: According to reporters covering the event in Kota Baru, the spin that is likely to be used for tomorrow's mainstream papers is that there are two factions of Mubarak members trying to organise the Mahathir's activities in Kelantan. However, the faction that lost got angry and resorted to spraying mace on Mahathir and Ibrahim Ali.
Meanwhile, Malaysiakini quoted sources as saying the incident was linked to the rivalry between two groups of Mahathir supporters, one led by Ibrahim Ali and the other by former Umno Kuala Krai leader Nik Safian Nik Yusof.
On the other hand, Deputy Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan told The Star that his officers have identified the man who sprayed the mace and expect to make an arrest soon.
Musa said the police were investigating the incident under Section 328 of the Penal Code.
n Putrajaya, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he was angry over the incident and ordered the police to conduct an immediate investigation and to take stern action against those responsible for the act.

BREAKING NEWS Dr Mahathir's arrival at Kota Baru this morning was greeted with a teargas attack from anonymous assilants.
According to a reporter on site, who received the full brunt of the teargas and whom Screenshots talked to, the 'attack' came as Mahathir was about to start his speech onboard the sun-roofed Pajero.

"All of a sudden, Mahathir was coughing away, and I had to run for cover as my eyes became pedih because of something like teargas," said the reporter who wanted to remain anonymous.
As at 11:40am, a Little Bird in KB told Screenshots that Mahathir is in no danger after receiving immediate medical attention. He would proceed with all the activites as scheduled.
A police report has been lodged of the incident.
But reports from Malaysiakini at 11:53hr tells a picture of commotion (Malaysiakini has since updated its story):
All hell broke loose at the Kota Bahru airport when former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was sprayed with mace this morning. The former premier arrived at the airport at 10.50am for a two-day visit to the PAS-controlled state of Kelantan. He was greeted by more than 1,000 supporters.
He was then escorted by several men in jackets to a waiting Mitsubishi Pajero arranged by former Kelantan Umno strongman Ibrahim Ali.
It was at this point when Mahathir and Ibrahim Ali were sprayed with mace.
The former premier was apparently about to give a speech.
Following the attack, Mahathir was whisked away in a waiting black Honda Accord bearing the registration plate ‘DS 666'.

Hmm... interesting to know that both TDM & DSAI used sun-roofed Pajeros as a tool to get their messages across.
Maybe car companies should sponsor/loan their sun-roofed SUVs to controversial/vocal politicians, due to the attention they gain.
Other companies can then place ads on those vehicles too... TDM can advertise his roti shop...

I hope TDM is all right. No matter what kind of a person he is, that is not the way for his enemies and people who don't like him should use...

Didn't he use similar means, through the Police, to break up demos, against him when he was in power?
The amount of double standards and hypocricy in the land knows no bound.
That said, if we condone what was done, we will be no better that these hypocrites. And I am and will be more civilised that. Violence of any kind is wrong.
Maybe someone can tell the Police and the UNMO and PAS demos in KL/JB that? Or these principles are too difficult for them??

I bet the assailant probably connected in some way to him or his supporter, whether he knew or not. Remember May 13? Who started it first, if not...? May God save us from another civil unrest because of this man.

Ya, shouldn't treat that guy this way. We should be more civilised - just throw him in jail, give him a couple of black eyes and charge him in court for sodomy.
That would be poetic justice...

Mahathir looks younger than his octogenarian age.
No wonder the man has much fighting energy left.
Compare that to lethargic Pak Lah.

That is a cowardly act from his enemy.
We human have brains, therefore all should debate, dialogue and hold discussion on conflicting issues.
Resorting to physical attack is just plain ball-less aka bukan jantan.

wrathofgrapes tastes better on friday -- day of loving and gving.
Poetic justice indeed, in deed -- the rouble is that in Malaysia, we do NOT know who's gifting, who is receiving.
Wait until Anwar Ibrahim sits on PM's chair -- the mostest poetic justice deliverer as NegaraKu deserves, because Anwar also reads The Bard. He knows what Poetry and ADIL is all about.

If it's tear gas, everyone in the vicinity would suffer.

CSH, I am not saying Mahathir directly incited the May 13 tragedy. But his open letter to Tunku is remembered as part of it.
Back to the issue here, probably the person is someone who hates him so much. Remember that Mahathir fighted many people from the ordinary people to judges to kings during his tenure as the Prime Minister. He surely has lots of enemy from outside and within.

Attacker is an UMNO member. See Malaysia Today. http://www.malaysia-today.net/Blog-e/2006/07/latest-update-on-attack-on-mahathir.htm
Latest update on the attack on Mahathir
Malaysia Today
According to the latest report received by Malaysia Today, Datuk Nik Safia bin Nik Yussof was the ‘unidentified person’ who sprayed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad with either mace or pepper spray.
Datuk Nik Safia, one-time Deputy Chairman of Umno Kuala Kerai, had earlier stormed into the airport with six tough-looking bouncers in boots and leather jackets and confronted Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad (ex-Member of Parliament Kok Lanas). He then demanded that he be allowed to ‘take’ Tun Dr Mahathir.
Tan Sri Abdullah would not engage Datuk Nik Safia who then said that he would ‘take’ Mahathir at all costs.
When Mahathir arrived he was ushered into Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s Pajero. Datuk Nik Safia then sprayed mace into the Pajero and grabbed the shocked Mahathir and bundled him into his (Datuk Nik Safia) own car and zoomed off.

Desiderata - should have listened to your previous advice and send them a couple of bottle of wines.
Yes, weekend is here. Time to sit back, put up the legs and sip them fermented grape juice.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence....

Poetic justice? Done by none other than an UMNO member? These should set many tongues a-wagging ;D IMHO, rivalry between different camps rears its ugly head once again. No wonder UMNO can't wrest control in K'tan! We'll definitely hear more of this incident in the next few hours.

Are these people trying to do a "Nazri"...to be a hero. First we have one trying to show off by publicly calling Tun not jantan. Now we have another with spray..next person..what will he do..??? bodily harm?
AAB has really lost control..If reports are true that the assailant is an UMNO member..then the UMNO president must be held responsible.

Weird. Some people always like to take the moral high ground when judging others. And the very same people will also stoop low enough to wish ill on others.
Whatever wrong Tun did (hey, nobody's perfect), he did not deserve to be physically "injured".
This country is now controlled by the mob. Mob rules man! Not happy with anything, just hold a demonstration but make sure you either carry the right flag or have the right politician with you.
Perhaps, there will be a market for "politician for hire" for mob sessions.

Rival supporters of TDM and one of them sprays the Tun. Very unlikely story. But the most damaging one to stump TDM's "movement"!
Souonds more credible if the pepper sprayer was from Khairy or Badawi's camp....but hanging out as a Mahathir supporter. So even if he gets caught he should maintain that line to gain maximum damage to TDM's and his supporters' credibility. After all TDM did not gain from this, neither his "movement" or agenda if any. The one to gain is Badawi and Khairy!

Observer: Very unlikely story indeed! The Tun was already in the open air car holding the megaphone (ready to address the crowd) when he was attacked. All the earlier versions, Msiakini, Star etc and even the Deputy IGP seem to have “guessed it” without the evidence as in:
http://powerpresent.blogspot.com/2006/07/dr-mahathir-sprayed-with-pepper.html
See the split image that confirmed he was NOT ushered in the car and then attack
