Will Umno sack Mahathir?

Though Umno politicians pooh-poohed at PAS vice-president Husam Musa's 'intelligence report' that Prime Minister and Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is planning to sack his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad next week from the party for his public criticisms against him, the possibility is there however remote it may be.

That's the analysis blogger/political commentator James Wong Wing On writes in Malaysiakini, today.

However, to sack or not to sack Mahathir is not an easy task, Wong hastens to add.

Though Mahathir holds the record of having be booted out of Umno in 1969, when he was aged 44, for having condemned the then Umno president Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Umno still has to first ask a realistic question, says Wong.

And the question is: At the ripe old age of 81, is Mahathir a 'lonely old man' in and outside the party?

Quote:

Although it is still to be the interests of both Mahathir and his opponents to portray the man or himself (Mahathir) as a "lonely old man", circumstantial evidences seem to suggest that it may not be the true picture at all.

If Mahathir is a "lonely old man" fighting "desperately" only to preserve his own legacies, then why is there a need for ministers and top powerholders, past and present, to be drafted to defend Abdullah and to counter-attack Mahathir?

If there is no crowd behind Mahathir, why did Abdullah abandon the strategy of "elegant silence" and concede to the ex-PM's public demand for his questions to be answered? Why not leave the "lonely old man" alone?

Why did Abdullah or his supporters feel the need to hold meetings for loyalty pledging and report the meetings publicly?

In view of these circumstantial evidences, the sacking of Mahathir would, more likely than not, cause another major split in Umno.

Those who think Abdullah has won entirely on his own the landslide mandate from the rakyat in 2004 will have to ponder if that's the way he could spend his politcal capital.

Mahathir has improved the life expectancy data of Malaysian males and mortality rate. This is of course bad news for his political opponents and detractors. PAS is ready to play the Mahathir card to benefit its fortune just like how it played the Anwar card. Such test balloon floated by PAS leadership is probably to gauge dissent within Umno and how to exploit it.

I do not know if sacking Dr M from Umno is the best or wisest thing to do for Malaysia in general and Pak Lah in particular.

But just for some pure satisfaction, I hope Dr M gets to set a record [which he has been so very fond of] of sorts, and is sacked again.

What is he going to do? Set up an Umno Crony?

But seriously speaking, my gut feeling is that there actually is truth in the rumours; moves are afoot to sack Dr M. But whether they actually do it, that may not be certain.

Ouch. My head hurts from all this fighting.

critism is to make improvement, just that politicians in this country often follow blindly..

isn't it good to always have a second opinion or listen to another side of story? please move forward and face the issues in more positive way..

Why do Pak Lah want to sack Dr M? Is it cos he criticise the government or cos he demand for answers on several issues? Apparently, he is demanding an answer on national issues which do not have any relationship with the UMno party. THus, i dont see any relevance in this statement made by PAs. They are as confused as the rest who make statements in the news.

My advise to Paklah ( if i ever meet him), just get the RM 9 moving. Make sure the money is there. If we dont have money as being claimed by certain parties. There is a term call borrowing. Lets manage the borrowings and bring the development to the greatest height.

Malaysian do not want to get involve in this tussle but malaysian is preferring to move forward ....... the 2020 vision is clear ahead of us.. we have to get there . We are now a joke to our neighbouring country - singapore. Dont forget that , the rest of the countries in south east asia is looking up high on our performance in this region.

if mahathir can selamba create havoc like this, whaddaya think he might do if he kena sacked by his ex peers?

If AAB sacks TDM, it would be the biggest political blunder of his career.

It will almost be comparable to TDM's sacking of Anwar Ibrahim.

If sacking TDM would solve the problem I think AAB is greatly mistaken.
We can see thst BN is squirmish with uncomfortable questions any sacking will confirm that.
TDM will continue to ask qustions whether member or no member and he will do it with even stronger vigour if sacked. The press as always will want to hear from him.
And lastly if sacked TDM might even join PAS and that will create an even bigger problem for he has a dossier of skeletons of each and every politician in BN.

Sacking Mahathir would be the easiest solution for the time being...avoids having to resort to panadol everynight. But the cancer will take hold and the rift this will cause will be much worse.

As it is day by day Mahathir is getting slaps in the face through various means. Already the Sukma case rattles a Mahathir legacy. The Ani Arope revelation, the former high court judge's revelation about the canon being held to Mokhtar's head and other misdeeds yet to come are leveling Mahathir's legacies. It is these that are Mahathir's Archille's heel and not so much his mega projects or the scenic bridge.

As for corruption and cronyism where financial inappropriation is involved, if really true...ofcourse it is true...then the so called "clean and trustworthy" government of Abdullah Badawi should revisit all these projects and recover from all the beneficiaries what has been lost through over pricing and over indulgence. But then since the Badawi government too and the new beneficiaries of the incumbent prime minister have to also make their own ill gotten gains the same way, nothing will happen and everything continues as it is. Unfortunately with financial inappropriations all these crooks stop themselves from accusing each other of these. Why? I wonder! Even Anwar Ibrahim, at best he only threatens to reveal all. Hey bloody Anwar, you should have done that 8 years ago to save the embarrassment your wife and daughter and sons had to face Can't imagine the taunting the son had to face in school!

So sacking Mahathir is not really a necessity. However, the plain fact is there is rumble in UMNO that can cause a split. And since it is not exactly politically and "face wise" good for the Malays, my greatest fear is that all the war mongers in UMNO will agree to pass on the accusing fingure as they so successfully did with May 13 to the Chinese. Let it be stated before they start pushing the buck to their favourite bogeyman that the non-Malays are not in any way party to this split in UMNO. It is a totally Malay problem. I hope they will resolve it themselves.

If the one who asked the foreigner to get out of malaysia if they don't like the system here was not sacked, then I don't know what logic Pak Lah will sack Tun Dr Mahathir.

I believe the intented sacking is just one of the options that AAB has in dealing with the current TM onslaught but it should be one that is way down the priority list.
I mean reading his 'big' intention to have the crooked bridge is to get ships to use the johor port is something most Johoreans find unrealistic considering its real feasibility !
I can only guess AAB will continue to play out more Ani Arope/Sukma cards to erode TM's credibility than to sack him which could cause more credibility to TM than anything else knowing the Malaysian mentality.
Don't forget the first salvo was fired by AAB when AI was released soon after his premiership appointment !
AAB should sack some of the current cabinet first before its the old man's turn .

Have you noticed something? Suddenly what Anwar Ibrahim says in court is published in the papers..

Sacking TDM will only prove Pak Lah has no backbone & is taking cover behind more spineless cabinet members.
Instead of UMNO putra he should be in UMNO puteri!

if aab can't sack kak-ap, nor one-eyed-mp, nor semi-biru, nor the polis fellow who said "up-yours" to the ip-what-it-is-called-oledy, in fact he hasn't sacked any one. what make you think he will sack tdm? before even considering if his marbles are big enough ....

I think all these "I dare you, you dare me" up-maship are the tactics and strategies of those power brokers from all sides.

To me, sacking or no sacking are irrelevent. As said and had been pointed out by someone before, one of the most relevent thing are the IPPs issues and the great sweet deals that they had.

Did anyone notice that :- When we had a situation where someone is trying to un earth those unbelievable, incredible and fantastic great deals negotiated FOR the IPPs, we suddenly have an old man trying hard to make all sort of noise.

In all, I think the "YouTube" video mentioned by one jeffooi's blog is rather relevent. It has good lyric.

Hey guys,,
question is will UMNO sack Mahathir..not will AAB sack Mahathir.

Sacking from UMNO means the disciplinary committee to decide..me thinks all the marbles combined in the dc will not dare to sack Mahathir.

Mahathir has files of info on each and every member of his team collected over 22 years. I don't think the DC is that stupid. They know it is a private war between AAB and Tun, so the dc team will not get involved.

AAB will still have to fight his own battles. The open show of support by UMNO for AAB is predictable., such is the mentality of UMNO members.

The support because they do not want to lose out on the gravy train

Another implication is:
"More likely than not, top and established leaders of other component parties in BN, such as MCA or MIC, also secretly fear the 'demonstration' or 'copycat' effect spilling over to their organisations."

It would be a big political blunder to sack TDM from UMNO.

Let Tun resign to join a "true UMNO"(ala S46)like Tunku and Bapa Malaysia would laugh from his grave.

The fact that Mahathir is one of the greatest leaders of our time is something that even his most bitter enemy would not deny.

I am not his greatest fan but I would not deny the fact that the income of Malaysians had increased by four fold during his leadership. He transformed the economy from an agriculture based to a modern industrialised state. He spent mega ringgit to create national icons that we are now proud to identify ourselves with.Indeed he made all of us ,the multi-racial ,multi-religious Malaysians, more Malaysians as a people than ever before. At the same time we had been abused and cheated more than ever before.

I would forgive him for all of his personal frailties being a normal mortal ( not being an angel that PAS demands of its leaders ) and pray that Allah would forgive and protect him.

I recognise that he is a statesman of his own unique breed.I appreciate why he managed on the principles of benevolent dictatorship and not on liberal or otherwise known as permissive democracy of the west.

What I do not forgive him is the fact that he continued to defend and trust one particular ransacker of national wealth and that he did not give enough attention to all poor Malaysians ( I am not a racist) as the nation could afford it during his time.

Even after all this had been said and done it is my conviction that Mahathir does not deserve to be sacked from UMNO.We should not make it our culture to be vindictive and spend too much time in family feuds and political vendettas.

Just place the man where he deserves.Be good and kind to him. As they say be good and kind to your elders and leave it to Allah and history to judge them.

Meanwhile let us move forward to implement the 9nth Malaysian Plan and make sure past plunderers and their cronies do not make a return though they are now hovering in the background to do just that.

sacking TDM? AAB can't even stand up against his late wife and the oxford dude from the 4th floor... what make anyone think that he is up for a full confrontation with the Great One!

Pak Lah is not ready or politically strong enough to sack Tun Dr M from UMNO. And anybody who has been long enough in politics (including Pak Lah himself) knows this very well.

From political point of view, if Tun is sacked from UMNO he will gain more support. Sympathetic quarters to Tun Dr M will grow. Tun also knows this. Since he has nothing to lose and a big leverage to gain by being sacked from UMNO, he will continue and double up his criticism on Pak Lah, perhaps in view of getting sacked.

Pak Lah has to deal with this problem. Both men are very able and seasoned politicians, but Tun has the upper hand.

During Tun's administration, eventhough the global economy was not good, average rakyat could afford to live easy. Buying power was good, price of commodities such as sugar, chicken, petrol etc are under control. The policy was to tax the big corporations to cater for developments & government spending. Individuals pocket was not affected.

Pak Lah's policy is quite the reverse. Big corporations are allowed to have "cost past through" to maximise their profits. This means that the public pays for any increase in cost so that the big corporations can maintain their profit amidst economic slowdown. This is good for big businesses, but bad for the people on the streets. People are getting poorer by inflation. Spin doctors can cover this facts by meddling the figures & economic indicators, but nothing can change the burning pockets of men on the streets. Any seasoned political economist knows by instinct that by increasing the price of petrol by 20%, will practically increase the price of goods by 30 to 50% from cascading effects of profit margins. Price control by enforcement is not at all effective at this scale.

What leaders of the country ought to be doing is to improve the quality of life of the public, not teach them a lesson by increasing the price of key materials (petrol, water etc) and spinning off by telling them it is to curb wastage.
