Up to speed

Do Malaysians read? Yes. Mastika, every month.

How many books does a Malaysian read in a year? Dunno. No royal commission report.

How long does it take a civil servant to read a non-fiction hardcover? Six years!

It was revealed that, last week, the Internal Security Ministry, headed by PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had finally banned Karen Armstrong's best seller, The Battle For God - Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam -- six solid years after it was first distributed and sold in Malaysia!

According to Amazon.com, Karen's book, that was banned alongside 17 other titles in Malaysia, was published in 2000. Blogger/political commentator James Wong confirmed that it was available in Malaysia soon after its release.

And of course our alphabet-soup group editor should know of another 1-2-3 anecdote.

The Condom Anecdote.

A condom manufacturer, which promotes safe sex, was making a marketing survey.

A French was asked: "How many condoms do you use normally?"

Answer: "Two a week, for weekends."

An Italian was asked the same question.

Answer: "Five. One for Monday, one for Wednesday, three for Friday to Sunday."

The French blushed.

An English gentleman was asked the same question.

Answer: "12".

The French, the Italian, and the interviewer all sat up.

The Englishman spoke slowly: "One for January, one for February... March... April... May... June..."

So how many years do you book a-read, my dear Malaysians?

Since we are in the subject of books,

JEFF OOI says: You got the context wrong. No, this is not about the subject of books. It's about whether you are up to speed in public governance in a fast changing world. I have stated the obvious and you have no cow sense of humour nor finesse. If not, what's the condom for? To wrap your sore thumb?

some publisher should approach Dr. M to write "The Malay Dilemma Part 2".

I am sure it will be a best seller!

Jeff's telling that the reading culture is not in the Malaysian blood and yet the gomen banned books.

I guess it's the same with movies. C'mon, let's face it, how many are really avid cinema-goers and how many would give a damn for documentaries and yet the gomen banned LKT.

On the other hand, this phenomenon is good actually! More people would want to taste the fruits of the forbidden later! I am for one! *heads on to Amazon to order those books* ;)

We are fortunate that in NZ the Kiwis love to read! Our two girls caught the bugs when we migrated here 1988. I remembered fondly that every week end we have to take them to the HUGE Central Library and they ended up loading the whole car boot with all kind of books and magazines, ALL FOR FREE! No limit, if u can carry, you take!
We are happy to say both are top students every year! Malaysians do not like to read because the good habit is not promoted, tell me; what are the public libraries in Malaysia?
The way things are going, and still dream of vision 2020, think again; Malaysia.
And Howsy, what make u think u will get your book order from Amazon? My brother in KL told me half of the time his orders disappeared! On the other hand I just received my brand new copy of "Pictures On A Page" today, in perfect condition; ordered through eBay last Friday!

SIX YEARS... I recall when I was a form 5 high school student in Melbourne,in my first chemistry class; our teacher asked me what is atomic weight based on. I cannor remembered what I said but remembered clearly that our teacher was shocked that what was taught as the atomic weight was changed SIX YEARS ago ;-) So Jeff... that was in the 60s and it atill take them SIX years to read a book! Ha ha ha...

I try to make everyone read more books as I have a vast selection, I've read about 3 in the past month or so.

In the age of internet and broadband, it makes no sense to ban a book just as it is stupid to ban a movie.
Unless our thinking process is locked back to the eighties.

That's how far back this government is to intellectual reality.

Jeff, I dont understand why did the goverment ban the book:

Kundalini For Beginners (Ravindra Kumar)

Any idea?

JEFF OOI says: Frankly, I am at a loss too.

Jeff, if you visit National Library, I doubt you will raise the question. ;) Oh, don't forget the visiting hours is from 10am - 6pm, close on public holiday. Great, isn't it. Malaysia BOLEH!

p/s: Oh, China are kiasu, they even open National library during Chinese New Year.

I wonder if those who pushed for the banning of Karen Armstrong's books ever bothered to even read them in the first place. Maybe just the fact that she was a catholic nun, her name is Karen Armstrong, christian sounding and she writes on Islam, so must be bad and be banned.

well, maybe the enlightened ones in Malaysia did not know that Karen Armstrong was awarded the Muslim Public Affairs Council Media Award (I think it is the British) in 1999. Furthermore, in a lot of the Islam bashing websites, Karen is accused to being an apologist for Islam and Muslims.

I wonder if this information will make a difference to those pushing for the banning of almost all of Karen's books.

Anyway, what am I supposed to dowith all those of her books that I have that has been banned eh?

Can someone enlighten us how is the vetting process on books conducted? Does someone or members of a committee actually read those books front to back and then come to some consensus of some sort or just one person reading it and then just relays his/her decision to the boss in KDN?

Imagine the power to "control" what the public can or cannot read? Fortunately in today's world, the control is in other more subtle forms of media. Time to re-read Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451"...

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
