Probing Abdullah's last line of defence... ( 2 )
UPDATED VERSION. Yesterday, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was quoted as saying former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad would get his answers in detail but..."the answers can be put out but this has got to be done by the relevant ministries, not by me." See Bernama.
The fact that Abdullah has, first, been advised to cocoon himself in 'elegant silence' and yet has now been smoked out to answer to Mahathir's questions, political commentator and blogger James Wong Wing On says "this could be interpreted as another round of success for Mahathir".
Despite massive media blackout of his views, this time, Dr Mahathir has succeeded in gaining attention from all and sundry because, says James Wong in Malaysiakini, the strategy to portray Abdullah as the 'good guy' and Mahathir as the 'bad bully' has backfired. The PM’s over-zealous media operatives and spin doctors overdid it and ignored one new reality, says James Wong and I quote:
That is, although Abdullah is still likable as a person, his track record as the premier on many vital current issues such as police indiscipline and brutalities, insensitive neo-liberal economic measures such as the drastic increase of petrol and electricity prices as well as corruption, nepotism and cronyism in politics and the economy have caused his popularity to plunge considerably in the eyes of the people since the 2004 general election. [...]
At this stage, the over-simplistic propaganda of ‘good’ Abdullah being ‘bullied’ by ‘bad’ Mahathir has ceased to win the hearts and minds of the people for they now see a more complicated picture of a ‘good’ man who is also a ‘badly performing’ prime minister.
So, will 'elegant silence' work when the whole nation, as prompted by Mahathir, demands straight answers?
Hold that thought. James Wong has an expose:
Abdullah has actually communicated with Mahathir privately without the knowledge of most of his advisers, strategists and propagandists (some of them are alleged to be lobbyists for foreign capital and other foreign interests) who try to isolate him (Abdullah) from more disinterested advisers and critics for their own exploitation and manipulation.
In fact, the worse has developed, says James Wong, as rumblings on the ground has attenuated rather acutely:
Although some members of the ruling elite have been circulating the term “elegant silence” to shield Abdullah from the pressure of being held answerable or accountable to the points raised by Mahathir, other less glorious interpretations of Abdullah’s silence have also developed and been circulating in the civil society...
Why the 'elegant silence'? James Wong has compiled five top possible reasons. (Read on)
UPDATES: Incidentally, Oon Yeoh also writes in Today, the free-paper in Singapore, that Abdullah has no choice but to answer's Mahathir's barbs, or else the knife of public perception will sink deeper on his front chest.
- Mahathir is vocal for berani kerana benar, and Abdullah has to maintain silent for takut kerana salah;
- Abdullah maintains his silence because his oratory and debating skill as well as persuasive power are not deemed as effective as Mahathir's;
- Abdullah maintains silence because he is still silently shocked and awed by Mahathir's sudden and no-holds-bar criticisms and has not reached consensus with his advisers, strategists and propagandists on how to respond;
- The inner circle of Abdullah is afraid that responding to Mahathir's criticisms would lead to more debates and may reveal more other controversies in governmental decision-making in the process;
- Abdullah does not know how to answer because most of the decisions on the controversial subjects were not personally made by him but his inner circle.
Comments
Almost all the time, Pak Lah's standard answers to being grilled by reporters or the rakyat are (1) don't question my noble intentions (2) I don't know. As Minister of Finance, he did not know that KJ became a major shareholder of ECM Libra and weeks later, the merger with Avenue Capital, a MOF company, was announced. When Rafidah initially gave the PM's office incomplete figures on APs issued, Pak Lah did not know, and publicised the figures, only for Mahathir to point out the omissions and inconsistencies.
Of course Pak Lah's inner circle is worried. Their man is incompetent, and you can be guaranteed that any attempt at providing answers to Mahathir will only provoke additional (and more difficult) issues. It's like digging a hole that you eventually will not be able to get out of.

They have made a mistake. It's not "Elegant Silent", rather it's Elegant Incompetence.

Apparently Mr. PM had also forgotten about his 11 traffic summonses :)

Anyhow, incompetent might not be a fair comment to him. If we start finger pointing others, even Tun Dr. M admittedly acknowledge his “lack of competence” for choosing his successors.
This is indeed a testing time for all Malaysians especially Mr. PM. Let us all not just hope but also contribute to make things better for the country !

?? What massive blackout? Dr M has been getting front page coverage in various media. If the PM wanted a blackout he would have pulled a Dr M and done an Anwar and the good doctor will find himself in Sungai Buloh before he can say 'reformasi'. It's not that Dr. M is not getting answers, it's that he doesn't like the answers or knows there is more than meets the eye. A deal needs to be struck. He can grill the current admin provided we grill Dr M until we get answers we want on the various atrocities he committed in his 22 abusive years in power.

Aku Aje Bodoh. HE cant even comment on ECM Libra deal and you know what kind of PM he is. Another hypocrite. Since he took over office, how many issues has he solved? Yes he has opened up many new deals but has any be closed with a foregone conclusion? IPCMC, AP saga, etc etc. CAKAP tak serupa Bikin.

Folks
I read that Pak Lah is asking the Ministries to provide the answers to Dr M's 4 questions.
I thought that was bad strategy for Pak Lah.
I thought the buck stops at the PM's table. Asking the Ministries to answer those questions is tantamount to dereliction of duty of the highest office. And we are told it is going to take time to get the answers... 6 months?? 2 years??? time.
If that is the definition of elegant silence, I feel sorry for Pak Lah.
He should stand eyeball to eyeball to Dr M. If for any reason, he IS the Prime Minister, and Dr. M is just an ordinary citizen who has retired from a job.
It just shows Pak Lah has no backbone... his backbone is supplied by the famous son in law. The unfortunate part for Pak Lah is that Dr M knows it.

let's not get carried away here. what exactly does mahathir want to know?
why were mega projects halted? maybe because they were bad ideas in the first place.
the half-bridge to nowhere? well it's better to spend 700 mil and halt the bridge than more than 1 billion and have a half-bridge, since singapore didn't even agree to their half.
press freedom? well, he should know those answers quite well himself.
the list goes on. how do mahathir's questions make abdullah's consistent, intelligent response look bad? on the issue of press freedom for example, at least abdullah is consistent when he says 'tun can say whatever he wants'; this was not the case under the mahathir regime. lest we forget, then it was tun can say whatever he wants--but the rakyat can't.
don't be distracted by the smoke; the issues facing the PM are massive and will not be solved any time soon. But those same issues also multiplied and grew worse under the secrecy of the mahathir regime. at least now, there is some hope for the antiseptic properties of sunlight.

Another david copperfield act? Before one subside, we get distracted to a different act.
The rakyat suffers when the burden gets passed from TNB to consumers. IPPs are the ones laughing all the way to the bank. Who own them and who speed up the processes?
With present admin, many of the same monkey biz gets repeated.
End of day, which of the lesser evil we're voting during election? Old and new, both also we're looking at which are the lesser evil. All the YES man are still very much in the bloated cabinet.
There won't be any speedy election. Indeed it would be a crisis for all the entrenched with hands deep in the jars ....

Tun Dr Mahathir has done us a favour. Whatever his intentions are, one of them is that he doesn't want our country to be to go down the drain faster than you say "Reformasi"...in a lot of ways, to TDM, this is as serious as 1998, cause he is going for broke and he knows he will have no energy soon... I think TDM when he sleeps at night and think about what is happening, he do not want Malaysia to be so helplessly down and selling its soul (and sand) when he is at his deathbed...and he knows he is the only one that could counter AAB's bad administration...so TDM had to do it! We all should back TDM...

I think Mahathir knows all the answers he is seeking for, he just wants the current administration publicise them.

I don't know how you guys see this, but to me, one dog barking is better than no dog barking. We're being robbed of everything, everyday. But it was always Joe Public that was screaming bloody murder. Not anymore. Joe Publicity is in the act now and with him making all the noise, the thieves can't get away without being noticed, at least. True, the Tun was behind a whole lot of crap as well, but with the big T before his name, our superb judicial system hasn't got a sniff. But as for the other goons/thieves in office right now... now, those fools we can nail. Let the big T bark. What he barks about is not that grave a concern, but as long as he continues to make noise, it'll be like stealing, but with the lights on. Still can be done, but a bit more uncomfortable la, you know? All that barking is bound to wake up at least one person in the neighbourhood.

bryant:
I support your views.
Malaysians for 20 yaers have caught in a situation akin to Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
If Tun Dr M's bark can reveal the Devil and the Sharks in the Sea, let's let the Dog keep on barking. Daylight robber barons must be sent to the guillotine (olde days! I don't mind bringing this part back really!) or the cleaners (mod days -- too light on these dung/s).
