Soccer craze
Talk of Fifa World Cup, here's the mood on June 9 kick-off in Leidseplein, one of the popular squares in Amsterdam -- with many drinking holes -- where I stayed last week. The Dutch don't think their team can make it to the Final 8, though...

Leidseplein in the morning
And the crowds throng in Leidseplein by 6.00pm... the sun set around 10.30pm when I was there. Heineken isn't the house beer here.

Ever wonder how to keep cycling straight after rounds of beers which, like Malaysia's, carry a 5% alcohol content?

Amstel then, eh?
I remember there's a couple of Indonesian/Malaysian restaurants in the Red Light District area there, something named Mawar and Wau. And yes, they serve the almost authentic overpriced satay.
Oh, did you have your round of 'happiness' at those coffee shops? C'mon...it's legal there. ;)
JEFF OOI says: That something illegal but tolerated in the Netherlands? ;-)

Jeff, it looks like Leidseplein is in the Red Light District of Amsterdam as there are lots of windows in the first pic. And did you go “window shopping” or visit the PIC?
JEFF OOI says: No, Leidseplein isn't within the Red Light District, which is a stone's throw away from Dam Square. Oh, went to explore the Red Light District twice -- once to visit the World Journalism Photos exhibition which was held in the Old Church right in the middle to the RLD; second time was to "look see, look see" but the Japanese taiko seemed to have known theplace better. I can't take any photos as the the ladies are at work, or else the mafia will be all over me.
They are crazy for football. Yes, Ajax Amsterdam, is a football club and is historically one of the top-10 football clubs in the world, and one of the three clubs that dominate Dutch football,
But the Dutch are more level headed than perhaps the Thais, see the two who were killed for making too much "goal" noise at

people, Leidseplein is NOT in or near the red light district.
was there last autumn/winter. always full in ther evening and weekend as long as the weather is good even in winter. i wonder what time you took the "empty" shot.
JEFF OOI says: The "empty shot" was taken around 8.30am. My hotel room wasn't ready so I took a 3-hour walkabout, hopping on and off the tram, and leisurely walking. Many shots on bicycles -- posted easrlier -- and some others were the satisfying results.

jeff didn't bs you.
the World Journalism Photos exhibition has been on for months now. i didn't see it though. i was with colleagues who are more interested in windows scanning than photography. btw, there are signs around the red light district warning tourists that taking photos there can be hazardous to one's health. so i kept my camera in the lowepro. even then i noticed some vendors stared at the bag a fraction longer than i was comfortable with.
the old church is at the central station end of the red light district.

Jeff,
There is a sex museum in Amsterdam, which i think visitors should not miss. Not erotic (of course this can be very subjective) and very professionally run.
JEFF OOI says: I think we passed by the museum but didn't make a stop. Quite smallish by Van Gogh Museum'sstandard, right? Next times perhaps.
