But makciks 'Up to Speed' ma!

Some readers cautioned me that I need to clarify my earlier blog: 'Up to speed'...

To be exact, we do have speed queens among us, reported Malaysiakini.

The supremo speed queen is no doubt Youth and Sports Minister Azalina Othman, 43, who has been slapped with 28 traffic violations -- all but two were for speeding -- according to www.rilek.com.my, the website that provides an online service for users to check and pay their traffic fines. View Azalina's summons record here.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, 52, has clinched the No 2 spot in the Umno and cabinet’s ‘Speed Queen’ title. She has 23 summones, all for speeding. View Shahrizat's summons record here.

Their boss in Wanita Umno, the International Trade and Industry minister Rafidah Aziz, 62, has been edged out into the third spot. She has 10 unpaid summonses dating back to 2003 -- - seven for speeding and three for parking violations - dating back to 2003. View Rafidah's summons record here.

Discounts

Azalina has outstanding fines of RM8,400, but with the generous police discount, it adds up to only RM3,850.

Shahrizat's outstanding fines totaled RM6,900, but with the discount offered by the police, she will only have to pay RM3,040.

Rafidah's outstanding fines totaled RM3,000, but she only has to pay RM1,180 after the police discount.

Earlier this month, Malaysiakini reported that Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was slapped with 11 summonses for speeding, traffic obstruction and parking offences. But he pleaded that he was not aware of the offences, nor who were driving his vehicles at the material time. He paid the fines after he was informed about the matter.

Abdullah’s fines, originally RM3,300, were reduced to RM1,000 with the general discount offered by the police.

Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is also in the list. According to Rilek, he has three summonses - all for speeding, and they were relatively recent, dating back to last year.

His fines work out to RM900, but he got a 50 percent discount.

Who now dare say Malaysians are not up to speed? Rilek-ah Malaysia!

And the worst bit, which has been pointed out by the DAP and possibly others - NONE of the VIPs have been handcuffed and dragged off by the police despite there being outstanding summonses, many dating back years.

Are they more equal before the law then the simple rakyat?

LOL.

But we're the stupid ones who vote them back into power again and again and again and again.

Repeating the same mistake is really insane.

The day we vote, we surrendered our rights and make others more virtuous and righteous than ourselves?

Weird world.

What i dont understand in this country is that even if you show up after 2-4 years to pay an offence you can ask for a discount, totally ridiculous.
In Europe you dont pay, no problem the amount will be double and interest will be charged.
And you cannot leave the country because it is added to your outstanding income tax.(plus interest)
Thats the way to collect.
Not the half past 6 Malaysian way

Hmm not sure if you guys realise that Madam AP has not changed her IC (her IC 1863....) Does she even need to queue up like we do? No wonder the rest of us Msian couldn't be bother changing to the new IC too

first of all, these vvips shld gv their car registration to all traffic police so that they dont issue any summonses. what's so difficult abt that?
end of the day the law doesnt apply to them.

secondly, why bother with slapping a fine of rm300 when u can later reduce it to rm150. just stick with rm150 for everyone.

Malaysia, apa2 pun boleh.

with this number of summons I think their kejara point will be -100. JPJ when you are going to tarik their license? never :(

In UK it's 40 pounds if you pay within 30 days, 80 pounds within 60 days, after 60 days you are taken to court and it's all done automatically.

The ticket arrives at your house within 2 days, you can pay by cheque, by cash at a local police station or over the phone with a credit card.

The second warning is issued automatically and finally the court summons is issued automatically.

You then have to show up and get a hefty fine.

Politicians have very tight schedules and sometimes they have to attend 2 to 3 lunches a day and 3 to 4 dinners a night. Not to mention various official functions and unofficial ones with their constituents. Of course speeding is still speeding and they should not be above the law. All I am saying is that they have very good mitigating factors which warrant a reduction in the fines imposed as they inevitable have to rush from place to place to fulfil their responsibilities as both Ministers and Wakil Rakyats.

Nevertheless, it is indeed refreshing to note that the summonses PROVE that the politicians are NOT above the law. These politicians are only human and they should be allowed to make mistakes like all of us. I would be more worried if they never received a traffic summons during their tenure as a minister.

We now have indisputable proof that Malaysia has progressed under the leadership of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi. This is more important than the economy. It is more important than party politics or whatever else we see as weaknesses in Pak Lah's administration. This in my opinion concerns the LAW; something which ALL of us are bound by and I am glad that in the eyes of the law, the Prime Minister and I are brothers! Finally, Malaysia is on the right track to becoming a civilised, developed and great nation.

By the way, was Tun Mahathir ever issued a traffic summons during his tenure as Prime Minister?

Another thing, the Prime Minister gets traffic summonses for speeding. So do we.

The Prime Minister gets a discount from the Police and so do we!

See, Pak Lah is our brother and Sharizat our sister. We are all family in the eyes of the law. I am so happy !

Orangminyak,
It is as if the politicians/ministers are the most busy people around the rest are not.
In fact, we are the ones who are in a rush to make a living and pay taxes and let these a*****e squander our tax money. My question is why should they be given discount? Did they appeal for it? I remember the traffick chief cop said the maximum discount was 30%. How come they got more than that?

Dear concern-lah,

I do agree with you that we are all busy, but perhaps not as busy as some (but not all) politicians.

I do know that the hard working ones are really hard working indeed and I am sure they really have the good of all Malaysians at heart.

The compounds imposed are usually quoted as "Maximum Compound" and thus there is discretion to compound a traffic offender less than the Maximum Compound. Thus I believe that the traffik chief is talking out of his arse when he tells us that the "discount" shall not be more than 30%.

I personally have had about 10 traffic offences myself and am glad to report that for some of them, I was charged RM100 to RM150 out of a Maximum fine of RM300. On others, where the charges were somewhat dubious, I was let off and my receipt showed NFA (No Further Action) which means that I did not have to pay a single sen out for the alleged traffic summons.

To cut a long story short, a mere citizen like me could get away with paying less than the Prime Minister. I am sure, a lot of you out there would probably share the same experience as me if you took the trouble to appeal and presenting your mitigating factors to the Traffic Police.

The Polis should send these summonses to JPJ and instruct JPJ not to renew the registration until all summonses are paid - no discount.
On the VIP's having too many lunch and dinner appointments, say bull shit. Speeding can result in accidents and sometimes death or severe injuries. Is the lunch or dinner appointment more important than the lives of Malaysians?

ogre,

the JPJ and Polis got no balls to send summons to VIP..you think they want to risk getting transferred?

They are good at bullying people like you.

Everytime they is an operasi...it will be a small time mechanic or hawker that have the police knocking at their door at midnight.

Imagine the police going to Badawi house at midnight to serve summons?...must be f888king joking.

ou and me.

Art Chan
There are still some brave people and people of principle in Malaysia. Remember Hassan Ibrahim the DG of JPJ, IRB and how he tracked down the VIP's and their fancy Mercedes and make them pay their fair share of taxes. May he rest in peace.

my question still stand..will the police go knocking at AAB's door at midnight and handcuff him?

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
