Umno's 60th Annivesary & Mahathir's DVD
Call it coincidence, but timing couldn't be more perfect.
As Umno celebrates its 60th anniversary today, a two-hour DVD depicting former Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticising the current crop of leaders for “lacking courage” makes it to the market.

The DVD is a recording of Mahathir's speech -- titled ‘Current Issues in Malaysian Politics’ -- and Q&A with 100 Malay professionals last December. It was a by-invitation-only event organised by think-tank Institute of Economic and Political Studies (Ikape).
For the record, Ikape is headed by former New Straits Times editor-in-chief Abdullah Ahmad aka Dollah Kok Lanas (DKL).
A quote from Mahathir in the DVD:
"If you want things to be right, you have to take the risk. But what I see now is a desire to avoid risks at all cost even if the country goes to the dogs."
Going to the dogs? You ain't heard nothing yet. "We are also not good at negotiating," said Mahathir. Quote:
I want to tell you, we had wanted to buy Russian MiGs (fighter planes). You know Russians, they are very inferior. Somehow or other, it was wangled without my knowledge, that part of the money (only to be used to purchase MiGs was also used) to buy (the American made) F-18 (planes). The very good American aircraft costs twice as much as the MiGs. And then, we acquired eight F-18s and 18 MiGs. MiGs are sold to us without any condition. If we feel like bombing Singapore, for example, the Russians are not going to object. Any Singaporeans here? Or ex-Singaporeans?But this great aircraft called F-18 which we bought from America, after buying it, after several months, I got to know that these aircraft cannot be used for any attacks against any country even if it is not Singapore, because the Americans sold the aircraft, but the source code is kept by them. So you cannot plan anything, you cannot fly them to carry out any bombing attacks against anybody but you have this wonderful aircraft which you can see at Lima (the Langkawi International Maritime and Aviation Exhibition). So, we spent this huge sum of money and they actually negotiated and agreed to these terms.
So that's why I say we are not very good at negotiating.
Mahathir also said Umno members were afraid of putting their heads on the chopping block and thus opted for silence when things went wrong.
Go get the DVD or read the transcript on Malaysiakini.

Any one knows where to get the DVD? Kind of miss the old man's sense of humor & wise-cracks. LOL

but that's exactly how the US sells arms to all other countries, which they dont really want to. sometimes it gets even worse.
they sell you the aircraft, but you dont take possession of them. they sit in the arizona desert, with a promise from the US that they'll deliver the aircraft when you go to war. try calling on that promise when you go into hostilities with an american ally.
what's even worse about the malaysian negotiation skills is they usually sell off all our rights and obligations. look at the impending US FTA which malaysia is going to be signing, and see how much of our rights we'd be giving away.

F is for Fighter. B is for Bomber, designated use for American Made warplanes. As F-18 is designated for fighting not for bombing. We should buy B-52 instead.
Malaysia had sent too many students to USA for computer studies, and those graduated under government loans, did not perform well even to do a simple deface of our neighbouring country websites last time.
So! Forget about to launch any war onto others, we can't cracks their codes. We can only copy-it, duplicate-it, ... ...

BaganSPU,
The F-18 is a multi-role aircraft lah, so it can handle both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. The versatility is why we got a few of them, in addition to the MiG-29s, coz the MiGs were only good for air superiority.

Usually, Russian A/Cs are better performance and more rugged. Their airframes are rugged and have good aerodynamics.....with not so good avionics and engines.
Btw, Mahathir could exchange palm oil and USD for Su-30s and other Russian equipment because Russian design bureaus such as MiG and Sukhoi are cash-strapped. Boeing and General Dynamics aren't that desperate.
And if the US is already reluctant to pass on the source codes to the Brits for the F-35 JSF, what more a country whose then-premier was never that friendly to it in the first place?
And I don't think the US released the source codes for the F-16s to Singapore either.

Dr M "we are not very good at negotiating"
Not good? It depends on which side of the fence you are leaning to. Look at the IPP contracts with TNB! Keep "one eye closed" and the rakyat kena squeezed dry, the rates are going up.

The americans have the source codes for the Fighters Operating System.
They know exactly where each & every planes are & could potentially switch them off.
The british cancelled their orders with the same reason after months of negotiation failed to obtain the sources for the OS.
I dont think Singapore has any sources to bomb us, It will be totaly unwise.
I agree that our weaked minded polititions & goverment purchaces are bad in negotiating, but whats worse was there was even no planing on what to buy in contrast to its purpose.
Its like asking a kid to buy an ice cream that he cant eat & not mentioning for what purpose its for, eating later or showcasing in a fridge.
Is there a way to order the DVD online?

I disagree on the matter of our negotiating skills. You cannot see what they negotiated for the country. You got to see what they negotiated for themselves and getting the country to pay for it. You think a RM15 million dolar house in Taman Duta comes easy ah? Surely it must be negotiating skills isn't it?

There are 2 versions of *-18s. One is the F/A -18 and what we have is the F-18.
The F/A-18's are dual role capable.. With the F-18, it is only for air defence role. We bought the same version as the Swiss.

Folks
The dirt under the carpet is now out into the open.. the way the UMNO-held govt operates.
Dollah Kok Lanas is anak kelatae.
Interesting how ex-UMNO leadership operates.. no hesitation to spill the beans once out of the closet... Anwar, now Mahathir.
It goes to show the dictatorial and controlled-thought policy of UMNO in making sure its members stay in line and behave like sheep.
People like Shahrir should get out and spill more beans.
Mahathir is playing hypocrisy. When he was the PM, he muzzled people from speaking in public, and now he is doing the opposite.
He is having both ways and being intransigent about it too.
Iam not complaining because the juices Mahathir is squeeaing out are trickling for the reading pleasure and consumption of our severely information-denied Malaysian public.
The gripe I have is that the pretentious self-imposed politically-correct half-baked Malaysian intelligentsia working in the public domain as commentators are a party to the widespread ignorance of the wily going-ons in Govt, mostly are of not to the public and national interest. So much so, we have allowed our elected Govt Ministers to answer to no-one, not even to Parliament, and the tax-payer salaried bureaucrats answering only to the their political massters with the propensity for corrupt practices while having responsibilities for affairs of Govt. And we watch the tragic comedy of Parliament being castrated through and through.
Mahathir is doing us a favour with is outing of UMNO and Govt, but it will not make one bit of difference because the corporate culture of UMNO and UMNO Youth will not change and they will fight tooth and nail to remain status quo... even to the point of using racial intimidation, as they have done in the past once too often.

Why mention Singapore specifically? I mean, you know, why not say aggressor?
Anyway our MIGs aren't usually used for combat anyway. More likely to be used for an airshow than bomb Singapore. Spend more money policing our borders, rather than on an expensive, noisy and, as it turns out, useless piece of technology. The Thai-Malaysian border is as porous as a piece of cloth, our Straits coast guard can't handle the smuggling and the piracy, and we nak buat muka glamour with fighter jets. Bodoh betul la.

May 12, 2006 09:18 AM
Frankly speaking if our pilots were to go to air battle I am not sure they can operate the MIG well because can one trust the reliability or well-maintenance of the MIG. In the past we hear our pilots were dying more from crashes before going into any air battles. Can we blame the pilot or the quality of maintenance???
Not only the fighter planes but last time we hear of the tanks were not functioning well.
The big question can we defend ourselves in time of war? I have my doubts. We probably find a lot of breakdowns.
But then the question is what happen to all the budget spending on the defense???

Ketuanan Melayu & Pahlawan Cina?
Hang Tuah Berbangsa Cina
Shahabudeen Jalil
Mengikut buku edisi W.G.
Nama Hang Jebat berbunyi Hang Jee Fatt, Hang Lekir pula seperti Hang Lee Ker, manakala Hang Lekiu seperti Hang Lee Kiew. Mengikut prosedur tentang suku kata nama bangsa atau keturunan Cina, biasanya cuma terdiri dari 3 suku kata sahaja. Nama Hang Kasturi pula
Nama sebenar Hang Tuah ialah Hang Too Ah.

Actually, I must agree with the doubts about the poor negotiators part.
If it were about points of law, I can understand the non-legal mind to be confused.
But in normal negotiations, it is not law that is being negotiated, but the terms and conditions. Only when these are agreed, are the lawyers called in to translate them into a legal contract.
So why are there so many loopholes? I can think of only one reason. There were two sets of negotiations, one for the official contract, and one for the individual contract.
I always maintain there is a very sane and logical reason for every decision made, no matter how silly, stupid, weird or strange it seems.
It is just that we do NOT know the real reason.
But fortunately, skeletons have a tendency to want to burst out from the cupboard, and I am beginning to understand now the reasons why some odd decisions were made.
It almost always comes back to monetary gains. So "follow the money" as in Watergate.

Ikape -- led by DKL, former GEIC of NST, forvever dropping former PM, now DPM's latte father Tun Razak's nama as if he was a demiGod!
What can readers expect from this guy who, after his relaese from detention under the ISA, vowed that the ISA was a giood peice of legislation, BUT WHEN IT WAS USED TO DETASIN HIM This guy is of the opinion the ISA is good when it is used against Oppositionists, NGO and commoners, but when it was used against DATUL ABDULLAH AHMAD, it was abuse!
Yeah, why not file a case at the International Court of Justice? Maybe the former PM can recommend one great Chinese lawyer?
But we should continue to be entertained by UMNO sandiwara, and expect Dr Mahathir to remain a lead actor. I dont mind -- it's free anyway and I've time:)/no dime:(! to spare.

Old horse (Mahathir)is now lame and senile. He thought that he is still the captain of the boat.Gosh! his time is up and yet he is trying to prove something.Does he know that he is now an ordinary Malaysian? His controversial critics against the government does not bear fruit. He still thought that there are his loyal followers to support his stance once he makes a statement. He is wrong. His loyal followers would not dare to go against Pak Lah's policy "toe to the line concept".His son who is in the UMNO's supreme council does not have the power to go against the "toe to the line " concept. So,why try to get the sympathy of the UMNO's MP when you know that they don't dare to oppose the leadership? It is like hunting for sympathy and even if you beg any of them,l believe no one would dare to follow.Old horse should not create problems toward this regime. He is now old and senile and barking at our neighbour,Singapore.Pak Lah should do something before a diplomatic relationship goes haywire.

There is a certain professional jealousy between the old horse of our Boleh Land and his contemporary LKY of Lion Land. LKY shows a good report card, a clean and efficient country to the world, and the old horse could only produce a self proclaimed scornful “A“, a usual Boleh way. He could now only shake his head bitterly over the bunch of his own incompetent apprentices.
Subconsciously, jealousy prevails and he wanted to bomb Lion Land without realizing that the sophistication of the military power of the Lion Land is not to be underestimated. The UMNO clowns have been very quiet this day and not keris wielding anymore at the cause way like those days.

hang Li Po could be a courtesan and not a princess as mentioned. Our MIG's and Sukhoi's prompted singapore to purchase a squadron of F-15's recently, which confirms the aircraft's capability. And fighter aircraft is not used to combat illegal immigrants, as the marches in the states recently confirmed that they too are unable to contain the influx. With the passing of mahathir's era, maybe we can expect better ties with singapore. As mentioned aerlier, the current government will be frustrated in their attempts to reform the country until all the contracts signed by previous regimes expired due to hefty compensation penalties. Meanwhile, we will just have to sit and bear.

Mahathir does not know the power of the Singapore army.
Every fighter planes in Malaysia is being tracked the moment it take off from the radar in the sky.
Once it crosses the border, it would be shot down by Singapore air defence system and expect massive attacks from its fighter planes base in US, France, Australia and Taiwan.
A video here:
mms://media.mindef.gov.sg/rsaf/RSAF60s.asf
http://www.mindef.gov.sg/rsaf/lpad/wp-ws.asp
The end result would be both will suffer massive destruction. Only the craziest, ignorant leader who went "amok" will entertain the idea of bombing.

During Hang Li Po's time, china was ruled by Ming dynasty emperor Tzu Ti (or Dzu Ti). It was during his time that they created a new capital city - beijing (mahathir - putrajaya), the longest canal, rebuilt the longest wall( Mahathir-tallest twin tower) Largest navy etc. Mahathir has stated several times that he was discriminated in singapore during his student days, that is why singapore was suitably mentioned as a possible bombing target.

just want to add my 2 sen to the us-weapons discussion....
when chicken-little countries like us buy u.s. aircraft, you don't need the codes to target singapore or any other us-allies.
as someone already pointed out you don't even need to get the planes in your hand.
it's just protection money you are paying.
one hint is the price you pay for each plane is dependant on how much protection you need and how desperate you are.
take the r.o.c for example, the legislators learned that when they realised they are paying much higher than "market" price for the weapons they have to buy and how little these weapons will contribute directly toward defense against an invasion from the mainland. but if they don't pay up, the g.i.'s may just take a few more days to come to the rescue. and only after taiwan agrees to sign over 1/2 its annual income to the great protector.
i don't think any one likes to pay the protection money if they don't have to. including singapore. and malaysia.

SUMMARY of SINGAPORE AIR FORCE
The backbone of the RSAF is formed by the Block 52/52+ F-16 Fighting Falcons. These are armed with US-supplied AIM-120C AMRAAM missiles and LANTIRN targeting pods, laser guided munitions and the 52+ have conformal fuel tanks for long-range strike.
RSAF Aircraft
While initially having bought as many as 70 F-16 planes, the early Block 15OCU models will be given to Thailand in exchange for some training grounds. This would mean that the RSAF will operate only the Block 52/52+ models and as many as 62 planes in total. The initial Block15OCU aircraft are believed to be upgraded to "Falcon One" standard by Singapore Technologies before being donated to the Royal Thai Air Force.
The RSAF also operates its aircraft in several overseas locations in order to provide greater exposure to her pilots. With F-16C/D Fighting Falcons, KC-135R Stratotankers, AH-64D Apaches and CH-47SD Chinook helicopters based in the USA, Marchetti S-211's and Super Puma helicopters in Australia and (T)A-4SU Super Skyhawks in France, almost one third of the inventory is based outside Singapore.
In 1994 the RSAF started the modernization program for its fleet of approximately 40 operational (R)F-5E and F-5F aircraft. The upgrade was performed by Singapore Technologies Aerospace (STAero) and the upgraded aircraft were designated (R)F-5S and F-5T respectively, operating from Paya Lebar Airbase. These upgraded F-5S/T might be capable of firing the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile but no live-firing has been done yet. The Fighter force of F-16C/D's and (R)F-5S/T's is supported by four KC-135Rs and KC-130Bs for in-flight refuelling.
Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) capability was introduced when in 1987 four E-2C Hawkeyes were delivered to 111 Sqn and coastal surveillance is performed by five Fokker 50 MPA, armed with long-range anti-shipping Harpoon missiles and torpedoes.
Singapore has ordered twenty AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters and after a long period of negotiations over the delivery of the sophisticated Longbow radar, the first one was handed over on May 17, 2002, fitted with the Fire Control Radar. An extra batch of twelve Apaches was ordered in 2001, before the first delivery actually took place, so eventually the RSAF will operate 20 of those sophisticated attack helicopters. All initial 8 Apaches are based in USA. 3 of the Apache Longbow returned in January 2006 at the Minister of Defense's request. Apart from the six CH-47D's delivered from 1996 on, a new batch of six aircraft was ordered in 1997, with an option of four extra airframes. At least 12 CH-47D have been delivered and in-service at Sembawang Airbase, it is believed that these have been upgraded to the SD standard prior to delivery. 8 of them were deployed in late December to January to support the relief efforts in Indonesia's Tsunami disaster. As of 24 January, 3 of them remain there while other assets have returned.
The RSAF also helped in the Indonesian Tsunami Relief efforts. It was the first and one of the only countries to reach the affected areas. The RSAF deployed C-130Hs, CH-47SDs and AS 332Ms there along with three of the RSN's Landing Ship Tanks and SAF's vehicles and soldiers.
On November 18th, 2004 it was announced the RSAF will be donating its remaining 7 F-16A/B's (3 Alphas and 4 Bravos) to the Royal Thai Air Force. The last 8th plane was lost in an accident. It is believed that they were handed over in late 2005. In return, the RSAF is given access to train on the Thai air base of Udon Thani for a set number of days each year.
Also, after 31 years of operations, the RSAF officially withdrew its fleet of A-4SU Super Skyhawks from operational service on 31 March 2005. The A-4SUs' achievements included flying directly from Singapore to the Philippines, incorporating the RSAF's first air-to-air refuelling mission in 1986, as well as the excellent aerobatic display of the 'red and white' Super Skyhawks flown by the RSAF Black Knights during Asian Aerospace 1990. A month before its retirement, the SkyHawk squadron won the top honours in a strike exercise against its more modern F-16 and F-5 counterparts.

Future plans
The introduction of a next generation fighter aircraft is also considered. In February 2003, Singapore joined the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) System Design and Development (SDD) Phase, as a Security Co-operation Participant (SCP). The first deliveries of the F-35 are not expected before 2015, but a replacement for some of the Skyhawks is needed by 2007. As a start, some 20 F-16D-52+ have been delivered from 2003 under project Peace Carvin IV.
The RSAF has embarked on the Next Generation Fighter (NGF) programme to replace the aging A-4SU jets. The original list of competitors was shortlisted to the final two - Dassault Rafale and the F-15SG Strike Eagle. The DSTA (Defense Science & Technology Agency) conducted detailed technical assessment, simulations and other tests to assess the final selection. On 6th September 2005, they announced that the Boeing F-15T Strike Eagle had won the contract over the Rafale. The initial batch of orders will be between 8 to 12 aircraft with the same number of options. Eventually, as many as 40 to 60 aircraft may be procured in several batches. Depending on the status of the F-35 program, more F-15SGs may be bought and the upper limit, as disclosed by the RSAF, is 80 F-15SG aircraft in total. These will likely be based at the new Changi East Airbase. As part of the weapons package for the first batch of aircraft, the U.S. will sell Singapore 200 AMRAAMs (AIM-120C), 200 AIM-9X Sidewinders, 50 GBU-38 JDAMs, and 30 AGM-154A Joint Stand-off Weapons.
The RSAF is expected to operate only two types of aircraft in the foreseeable future; the F-35s and F-15Ts. The RSAF also operates Air Defense assets in the form of SAMs and ADA. Some of which are permanently assigned to Army Division units.
In January 2005, it was announced that 6 Sikorsky S-70B (international derivative of SH-60B Seahawk) naval helicopters will be purchased, complete with anti-surface and anti-submarine sensors, sonars and weapons. These will be operated by RSAF pilots, with the Republic of Singapore Navy operating the sensors and weaponry. They will based onboard the new Formidable class frigates. The first 4 to 8 AH-64D Longbow should also be delivered later in the year, after achieving pilot FOC.
Air to air missiles in RSAFs inventory include the AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-9X Sidewinder, AIM-120C AMRAAM, Derby*, AIM-7 Sparrow, and Python 3/4s missiles.

Singapore should have worked with PM Badawi to settle all outstanding issues to bring Malaysia-SIngapore relationship to a new high. They have been too legalistic in their approach, perhaps due to their tendency to view eveything through a western prism.
The Malaysian-Singaporean collaboration would have been unmatched as a block apart from China, Japan, Korea, India in Asia.
Video of Singapore awesome "top guns" and defence systems.

mwt,
whatever happend between the IPPs and TNB has nothign to do with the impending electricity hike in tariff. The tariff hike is due to the oil price. Anyway, DrM was referring to the negotiating skills of ministers and officials WITH OTHER COUNTRIES. And it is true...Malaysia is not good at it. So, what do you mean by bullseye..and all that...you are not focused!
Anyway, just because DrM is speaking out what is right, you don't have to dig some dirt so to hit back at him for your own satisfaction!
Be a gentleman and accept the fact that what matters now is what he is doing now. Stop talking about hypocrisy and all that. He is not a hypocrite and he speaks with passion every time whther PM or not.

Nicky, you must be naïve and dumb that you cannot see the connections of the pricing in the IPP contracts and the impending hike in prices. There is NO official disclosure, but reports have indicated the IPPs are charging TNB “15-16 cents per kWh compared to 8 cents wholesale generation cost by TNB” and these are passed on to the consumers.
Check it out at the Asian Development Bank’s study report
http://www.adb.org/Documents/Books/Developing_Best_Practices/Power/appendix.pdf
So the Ministers and officials maybe are No Good at negotiating with other countries but are TOO GOOD in negotiating with their own cronies and the buddies including you perhaps when they can line their pockets. And the same goes to the NS Tolls and other multi billion projects contracts.
Therefore it is too dirty to wash and hang your linens in public?
And “what he is doing now” but to rock the Malaysia boat” further which has already gone to the dogs long time ago. Pak lah is trying very hard at the last minute to abort this ill-conceived bridge to save the bankrupt Nation from further, degenerating and worsening and given a generous bail out contract

I do not think “A Malaysian Hero“is trying to be a hero by copying and pasting the information of the Summary of Singapore Air Force. The intent is to show the naivete’ of the statement “If we feel like bombing Singapore, for example, the Russians are not going to object, blab blab blab ---“. The information of RSAF is indeed very enlightening though a quote of the source could make it more convincing.
The elites of Oxbridge and Harvard of the Singapore cabinet (quote from flyer168 ) are not stupid to hang a piece of juicy meat among the mouth watery crocodiles and parasites in the region without providing an adequate protection. Throughout the years, they have quietly built up a very sophisticated and strong military force while the rest of the corrupted leaders of the region were busily siphoning wealth from their countries.
Perhaps there is wisdom in Sydput’s saying “With the passing of mahathir's era, maybe we can expect better ties with Singapore. As mentioned earlier, the current government will be frustrated in their attempts to reform the country until all the contracts signed by previous regimes expired due to hefty compensation penalties. Meanwhile, we will just have to sit and bear.”
Pak Lah and his administration have their own kind of wisdom; establishing peace among the countries in the region and enlarge the economic pie so that everyone has something.

"If you want things to be right, you have to take the risk. But what I see now is a desire to avoid risks at all cost even if the country goes to the dogs." tuN, you are absolutely right. The new PM is not willing to take risks, including confronting the ex-PM on various past and present issues. What we Malaysians "see now is a desire (by the current PM)to avoid risks (by not confronting the ex-PM responsible for much of the problems in the country) at all cost even if the country goes to the dogs" because of the ex-PM's past and present actions.

Sorry Ah Jeff ! but still want to get my 2 sen in .
Case in point is the Malacca (Jasin) MP issue which I think is a classic post TM era which is the Customs people dare to expose the MPs visit and agenda under the new PM but if done so previously then the Customs guy will end up in Custom's Siberia land !
This is the difference and I guess as an onery rakyat having the old guy spew venom albeit 'hypocritical at best' is still part of what a more 'open' government is all about.
Its like after our Bapa Malaysia TAR's retirement ,we are hearing more insider views now with TM on the outside except TM is more direct and have technology on his side (DVD/Blogs) while poor ole TAR had onlya miserable column in the then Star as his usual polite mouth piece.
Although it is 'hypocrisy' I hope TM will continue to spew venom until no one wants to listen anymore!
Sorry again Jeff if I hijacked this topic !

The QUESTION to ask Jeff, is who was the Defence Minister at that time (F18 deal)?
What's clear is that some people (high up) conned Tun M and disobeyed his decision to buy Russian only. The Russians provide full functionality for weapons they sell.
