Sandiwara?
UPDATED VERSION. As the Prime Minister is heading for Austin to bring WCIT2008 back to Malaysia -- the entourage is huge and expensive -- you need a respite after an overdose of crooked bridge, fuel price increase, Proton and IPCMC laggard.
PROLOGUE:
May 2: Member of Parliament Mohd Said Yusof (BN-Jasin) insinuated at Abdul Rahman Abdul Hamid, the Director-General of the Customs and Excise Department, for being a publicity whore. The MP suggested the Customs DG should concentrate on his work rather than spend time announcing to the media about staff transfers or take them to venues to announce seizures of smuggled goods.Said also wanted to know if the director-general was entitled to a outrider escort.
SCENE 1, Act 1:
May 3: Someone spilled thebeans to the media that a Member of Parliament from Malacca allegedly asked the Customs and Excise Department to "close one eye" in a case involving the import from Indonesia of sawn timber with a cross-section of more than 60 inches, which is banned in the country, recently. The Customs and Excise department has reportedly submitted a detailed report on the MP’s alleged interference which took place at the Malacca Customs Office on April 14.
The NST says Malacca Customs director Hashim Pardi, when contacted, had confirmed the seizure of the sawn timber. However, Hashim refused to comment when asked if any MP had seen him to settle the case.
SCENE 2, Act 1:
May 4: At the Dewan Rakyat, Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang raised a motion to refer the implicated but unnamed Member of Parliament to the privileges committee.Lim's motion was supported by BN Backbenchers Club (BBC) chairperson Shahrir Abdul Samad, who said: "The Privileges Committee is a tool that allows us to manage our own affairs. The committee can call the relevant witnesses to testify and only when the process is completed, we will make a decision".
SCENE 2, Act 2:
May 4: Members of the BN Backbenchers Club refused to join their leader, Shahrir, in supporting the Opposition's motion.Shahrir who is also Johor Bahru MP, walked out of the House to hold a press conference at the lobby of the Parliament.
SCENE 3, Act 1:
May 4: Backbenchers Club (BBC) chairperson Shahrir Abdul Samad announced his resignation abruptly outside Parliament.Teary-eyed, Shahrir said: “I am disappointed that the backbenchers did not support this motion. I had hoped that they would because it was meant to safeguard the autonomy of Parliament and the dignity of MPs."
SCENE 3, Act 2:
May 4: Met by reporters later, Shahrir said he will not change his mind about the resignation.“They (backbenchers) don’t understand it. I have explained why I supported the motion. If the majority of backbenchers think otherwise, then I should go,” he added.
Shahrir clarified that he was not supporting the opposition but merely discharging his duty as a MP to uphold the principle that Parliament should protect its integrity and be allowed to manage its own affairs.
“My role as MP has always been consistent, to protect the rights of a member of the House, I want Parliament to be a place where MPs are respected, I encourage MPs to learn about this subject,” he said.
SCENE 4, Act 1:
May 4: At a separate press conference this afternoon, BBC deputy chief Ahmad Zainuddin said the club held an emergency meeting and unanimously agreed to urge Shahrir to reconsider his decision.
SCENE 4: Act 2:
May 4: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz, at another press conference, also called on Shahrir to retract his resignation and reminded him to respect the majority decision in the House.
SCENE 4, Act 3:
May 4: On the other hand, Lim said he was angry about the whole issue and was not shocked with Shahrir’s decision.“I am angry, he is angry too on all these nonsense over parliamentary independence, autonomy, credibility and integrity. It’s a shameful day for Parliament.
“The motion is not to cast aspersion on anybody. If it is untrue, we can clear the concerned MP’s name, clear Parliament’s name and show that we have integrity, we don’t hide under parliamentary privilege. Whereas if it’s true, then we take action,” he added.
EPILOGUE?
The story has not ended. It is now up to Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is also the BN whip, to decide whether to accept the resignation.
We will see if Teflon®, the non-stick material, is used in the production of this wayang about the 'Little Napoleons'.

The news of the resignation of Shahir comes as a shock to me, and to many other Malaysians. Shahir has been very instrumental in balancing between what the people's wants and what our elected Ministers give. He has also been a very good mediator in many ongoing problems, such as the Proton and AP case.
His resignation has just added a million tons of credibility and respect to his name. He has proven to be a man of honor, proving that the BN elected representatives are not puppets to accept any wrongdoing by their own man.
He did the RIGHT thing, which is to support the motion refer the MP to privileges committee. However, our fellow gutless and hopeless MP's in the parliament were not able to show the courage and respect to follow suit. This shows how our Malaysian parliament lacks credible and respected elected MP's we very much crave for.
Every true Malaysian will be behind Shahir on this matter. He has demonstrated a no-nonsense, straight to the point, honest and respectable behavior, which sadly the rest FAILED to follow.
I weep for my country as there are only so few good men left in parliament.
On another note: I'm gald that Nazri spoke up on the maruah bangsa issue with singapore! However, no one has responded directly to GCT's comments!

I'm wondering whether this act of rebellion is just a sheer coincidence with the fact that the PM is currently away from the country or just part of a bigger "sandiwara" that about to take off.

Applauses to Shahrir. Wish the other UMNO members would inherit your courage in supporting the truth. And yes, all UMNO MP's can hardly do any wrong. I cannot see how Pak Lah tolerate these things after all he said on fighting corruption. I for one still believe in his sincerity, but not on his implementation.

I have always respected Sharir for his many principled actions. Yes, he is an anomaly in UMNO.
But I just wonder, did he seriously believed that his fellow backbenchers will follow his act based on principles? Nazri has said in an interview after the incident: "The motion is too general and usually, we don’t support a motion tabled by the opposition”.
In other words BN MPs will not support an opposition motion NOT because there is NO merit, but because it was an opposition motion. That is the norm, and why should it be different now?
Neverthrless, hats off to Sharir for making a stand on principles, a rare act nowadays amongst our "leaders".

Glad to see many look at his actions on a positive note!
He SHOULD NOT accept the job back, regardless if Najib rejects his resignation!
The whole idea od BBC is for them to be able to act as an "opposition" to instill integrity in the parliment ...but this shows that the majority dont have this integrity!
Kudos to Shahrir! True Malaysians are behind You!

The latest updated MalaysiaKini news has reported that the MP in question is
Mohd Said bin Yusof of Jasin.
So could the leaked news about Said be "revenge" for chastising the DG of Customs for being an attention whore? Tit-for-tat.
I've always respected Sharir Abdul Samad as an MP and leader of the BBC, and I'm proud to see a fellow Johorean sticking to his principles.
As for the rest of the MPs who voted against the motion, SHAME ON YOU.

if indeed as najib (the whip) said, that BN MP's should not support a motion by the opposition party. then someone from BN backbench should table a similar motion.
as others have pointed out, whether or not Said is quilty as charged is not the issue. the issue is if our parliamentarians will subject themselves to be checked for integrity.
btw, the gov really needs to tackle these little napoleans mistaking the highness of their position. i've seen on many occassions where dozens of government officials, their secretaries, drivers, et al loitering around the airport waiting for a senior boss to arrive. is this necessary? no wonder some of our gov agencies are so inefficient. perhaps paklah should give instruction to stop this stupid practice and lead by example, so when he's travelling for official business, except on special occassions, there should not be an elaborate welcoming party at the airport too.

From Malaysiakini:
"The MP, identified as Mohd Said Yusof (BN-Jasin) today denied the allegation."
Like most thinking Malaysians, I am most skeptical of this kind of lame denial. If he is really innocent, he should challenge that allegation. After he has been cleared of any wrongdoing, he can demand a public apology from the parties involved.
This is a very serious allegation, and both the MPs and the government must not simply brush it aside. Let's not forget that Anwar was charged and had served six-year sentence for corruption (alleged abusing of power).

From Malaysiakini too:
Jasin MP Mohd Said Yusof is quoted "“I went there to appeal on behalf of the agent but coincidentally, I have some interests as I’ve been running a freight forwarding agency since the 1990s. I went there to appeal because many people were making noise over it,”
Don't know how to highlight it here...but let me repeat that part, if you don't mind: "but coincidentally, I have some interests as I’ve been running a freight forwarding agency since the 1990s"...
Well, we all know that he is an idiot. But here he shoots himself in his foot..and the conflict of interest is so glaring....and yet the rest of his buddies including Badawi and Najib will not see this as a problem. The problem for them is Sharir should not have resigned.
Just see how shit is sticking out of this guys pants and it is stinking and yet the rest of them lick it all up, savor the stink and redirect our attention to soething else.....You will see the spin tomorrow.

vehemently. coincidentally? yea, the next time the police stops u for an offence n u offer them a bribe and they catch u for it, just say u coincidentally shoved them a few bucks while showing them ur ID. Again we will see that our PM will not do anything abt it. Appeal as many ppl are making noises he said. Why didnt he appeal when petrol price soared. Many ppl were making noise too! Now TNB gonna hike up the tariff. Many MORE ppl will be making noise. WILL THIS GUY GOTO TNB and APPEAL FOR US ALL??? I will go and fetch him to TNB HQ and he can tell the boss that so happen he was there to pay bills! DUHHHHH

foa, yb said deserves an applaud for his broadside against the custom dg. politicians come and go but these senior gov officials stay a long time. the way some of them response to pak lah's call for reform makes one wonder who is the boss.
then, yb said actually said it's no big deal to ask the custom officers to close one eye. he also implied it's no big deal to ask the police to "tolong" after speeding at 150km/h. anyone know what's the going rate for 40km/h over the speed limit? rm80-100 perhaps?
even if he wasn't the one who asked the custom to close one eye, his tidak-apa attitude towards the laws is enough to demand that he resign as an MP.

Folks
All of you forgot to give kudos to Jeff for the way he presented the parliamentary circus into a short play with many scenes and one act.
I thought that was refreshing.
Since this is the usual stupidity of our UMNO MPs,some of them coming from the kampung background and suddenly thrust into the national political theatre, felt they are bigger than Parliament, and thought Parliament is like a wakaf in the kampung where the tok penghulu decides at his own whim and fancy.
We need people like Shahrir to come out to shake them out of their daydreaming each time these UMNO MPs come to parliament dressed in suit and tie ( makes them feel distinguished and very clever).
Bunch of fools that we have to represent us and it takes someone like Shahrir to stand on his ground to point them out exactly that.

I'm always sceptical when ministers resign. Call me cynical, but they usually worm their way back in again, after standing down "on principle". Mahathir, Ling Liong Sik etc. We'll see if Shahrir can be "persuaded" to return.
Our Parliament is a joke. No other word for it. We spend more time debating about what MPs should wear rather than proper national issues. Non-malay ministers get called kurang ajar in front of the whole House. Opposition members are shouted down. Female members are harassed (Theresa Kok?). And when the Opposition tables a motion, it is immediately struck down, regardless of merit or importance. Our MPs should watch the UK Parliament or the EU Parliament in session once in a while. Respect between the parties (in UK), professional, well-mannered, and debating proper stuff. Malas lah nak tengok sandiwara ni, baik aku pergi tengok Coronation Street.

Ever heard of the value of media coverage? Ever you heard of Mohd Said Yusof before this? Mind you he probably looks at all the medai coverage and his TV appearances now as a reward well earned. After all I never heard of him before this! And now he is fa...ahhhh...infamous!...What about Sharir....I guess in his case for once the value of the media coverage for him might be positive....so he gains....AS for Said, after all his constituents who voted him in are probably as dumb as him so for them his picture in the papres and his name in big bold is all that matters...The fact that whats written is shameful to him..I think that is beyond his understanding!

I hope that the people of Jasin remembers this and vote for an MP that doesn't have any "co-incidental" interests in forwarding his or her own commercial agendas when representing the rakyat.
As for the rest of the MPs who did not vote to refer him to the privileges committee, shame on you! Shame on ALL of you! Shame on ALL of you!
What a perverted sense of honour! All you MPs who didn't support the motion were probably doing it because deep down, through your rotten conscience, there is a tiny part of you that does not want to be hypocritical. There are some of you who bully to get things your way. There are some of you who "leverage" your positions to "arrange" for kickbacks and favours. And when a fellow MP was exposed for doing the same thing, how can you, the black pot, call another kettle black, right? By not supporting the motion, all of you are telling the rakyat that you condone such practices.
I feel saddened that corruption has now run so rampant in this country.
Vote them out in the next election.

You see the whole problem lies with this MP of Jasin, Said. He first denied that he was the culprit but in today's papers he had owned up to his actions. Of cos he is still saying that he was there merely to ask the customs to release the sawn timber. Yea lie all you want. Everyone has been doing it for donkey years and all of them got away with it. So i guess you too will be let off the hook as the people in power are too dumb to figure out what crime u have committed.

May 5, 2006 09:18 AM
The Star today:
...Mohd Said said he asked for leniency on technical grounds.
“I was told that the sawn timber had exceeded the cross-section limit of 60 inches (153cm). I told them that this was arguable since the 60 inches will include holes in the centre of the timber and the bark.
“I said yang mana lebih sikit, pejam matalah. Biasalah itu (whichever that is a little bigger, please close one eye. That is normal),” he said ...
Sounds quite familiar. It's like Clinton-Lewinsky case. Clinton said I did not have sex with Monica.
It's how one interpret '60 inches' and 'close an eye'.

Hi Jeff
Yes, you deserve praise for serving the latest drama (sandiwara) in such a palatable manner.
Mohd Said Yusof (BN-Jasin) must be “basking” in agony under the spotlight.
Let this be a warning to all MPs. The rakyat elected you, so the rakyat keep you close to their heart, and are all eyes and ears in whatever you do. And, we have a wonderful tool call the internet.
Hope to get more info on
• The businessman whose timber consignment was seized at Sungai Rambai port
• The people who are customers of Mohd Said Yusof’s forwarding company
• The other forwarding agents who have complained to Mohd Said Yusof about Malacca customs
• The other “close one eye” cases that are known to Mohd Said Yusof since he said these cases are “normal”
