Maxis returns 1 block of 3G spectrum in Indonesia
Maxis' 51% subsidiary, PT Natrindo Telepon Seluler (NTS) has decided to return the 1 block of 1x5 MHz Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode, and only keep the 1 block of 2x5 MHz Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode for its 3G licence in Indonesia.
With the return of the TDD block, Maxis will now have to pay RM131m in upfront fees and RM65m in annual fees for its Indonesian 3G licence (vs RM196m upfront & RM97.5m annual fees previously). The upfront fees is payable by 31 Jan 08.
For annual fees, under a deferred payment scheme, Maxis has paid RM13m (20% of annual fees) for the first year. Thereafter, the annual fees will increase to RM26.0m (40%) in FY07, RM52.0m (80%) in FY08 and RM84.5m (130%) in FY09.
Today, UOB-Kay Hian investment analyst Foong Choong Chen maintains a SELL call. His Target Price for Maxis is RM7.60.

it's a wide move to return 1, why have more and pay higher royalti when the usage will not give you the payback in the next 5 yrs the least?
Its good to note maxis will role out 2G and place 3G as overlay, selectively, like all other operators in the world!
Many governments sell 3G spectrum to mint money out of it, only a few are genuinely giving it out at low cost in order for the technology to be more easily and quickly adapted! One of which is Malaysia!
Most developing 3rd world governments will take every opportunity to squueze as much for the licensing fee, ultimately the looser wiill eb the users as operators wont be able to lower cost as they need to recoup investments, which for a greenfielder is typically between 5-10 years!
