Malaysia handcuffed
April 19, Screenshots reported that Malaysia was made a candidate for the new UN Human Rights Council, which is the new body taking over from the UN Human Rights Commission, after the reforms initiated by Kofi Annan.
We got it. Malaysia is among 47 countries elected yesterday to sit on the council. Other countries elected to the council include China (ahhhhem!), Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Britain and France. [See full list]
Malaysia is now firmly handcuffed so that it complies to global human rights convention all the time. I can't say much for China, Cuba and Saudi Arabia, though.

So has Robert Mugabe been approached to lead this new council yet? Or maybe that Serbian general Mladic would be offered the position, when he's found. Did Malaysia have to give up it's ISA laws to join this agency? I don't think so, so how can we expect anything to change internally? Are we going to tell others how to behave now? Do we have the moral authority to do this? Many questions yes, but the saying "People who stay in a glass house shouln't be throwing rocks at other people's homes" is highly appropriate. Our leaders should come out and clarify what effect this will have on our citizens..

So what is all these 1 year, 2 years, 3 years attached to each country mean? Does that mean that if a country is with 3 years it will be valid for 3 years before re-election?
If yes of the above, then China not only is elected 'for the wrong reasons' but also allow to push her weight around for the longest.
China is getting away with murder these days. Something is very wrong with the way this world is running.

Maybe some people want some amusement duriing serious discussions and Malaysia is supposed to play the jester in that new Council!

I was told, many, many years ago by a teacher that a certain student in my school had been made a prefect simply because he was such a problem student. [ I had been questioning why the well-respected corp of prefects had been apparently tainted by the appointment of said naughty student.]
The principle being that once he was made a prefect, the boy may no longer feel the same about breaking the rules, misbehaving and such.
Have I got it right that Jeff was alluding to the same tactic with the words "Malaysia is now firmly handcuffed"?
Malaysia still has a very long way to go where Press freedom and human rights are concerned. But there has been progress, real progress in some areas. Progress which may not have had any chance just a couple of years ago.
So maybe the handcuff tactic may yet see the nation moving further forward. Hopefully.

The world is wrong just because China is up there? Hey, don't be naive - wake up and smell the non-stop daily murders in Iraq and Afghanistan and the blatant abuses at Guantanamo Bay.
