James Gomez arrested

Authorities in Singapore have arrested Workers' Party candidate James Gomez for allegedly "threatening the country's election officials" -- a day after he failed to win a seat in the general elections.

James was arrested Sunday for alleged "criminal intimidation," said his aide Jacob George in an AP dispatch carried by AsiaOne.com.
.
The AP story said James, a researcher with Sweden-based Idea Foundation, was about to leave the country but was stopped by immigration officials, who turned him over to the police.

A security official, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity in line with policy, said James has not been charged. If found guilty for criminal intimidation, James could be jailed for up to seven years.

This is how the story is reported by AP:

It is not immediately clear why the elections department waited till after the polls to file the complaint.

The incident was played up by ruling party politicians and local media, which rarely deviate from the government line.

Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, called (James) Gomez, 40, "a liar" and a "bad egg."

"He's not a fool ... He's saying he's got brains," elder statesman Lee was quoted on state-broadcaster Channel NewsAsia's Web site as saying. "Well, what do you use those brains for?"

Lee is the father of the current prime minister and wields considerable influence as "Minister Mentor" in his son's cabinet.

The PAP said they targeted (James) Gomez, a researcher with a Stockholm-based institute, as it was an issue of credibility.

Thanks Little Birds from Singapore for alerting me on this breaking news since 8.00pm about my friend James. We last spoke on the same panel at a global conference in Manila in April. We are certainly concerned about the wellbeing of our friends.

Cyber rumblings started here: http://forums.delphiforums.com/sammyboymod/messages/, and here.

Lee junior wasn't serious when he said he was "going to spend all my time thinking what's the right way to fix them", was he? He apologised, too, didn't he? Watch the video while it lasts.

Now, forget about the Asian Value video. How about a serving of 'Bak Chor Mee and Tur Kwa' on CCTV?

Like father like son lor. He'll fix them opposition. Anyway Harry still calls the shots in Singapore.Harry knows that giving it all up like Mahatir can be foolish.

Singapore really promotes "Asian Values" huh?

i'm sorry fellows but i don't get the rants about "asian values". what's so "un-asian" about trying to get back at your opponents? surely that's universal values/code of practice among politicians. on the other hand, is it so "asian" to give your opponent(s) a chance to get back at you? no matter that "incident" was staged or an honest mistake, the fact that it happened doesn't speak well for gomez's political skill, even if he is a saint.

We are the PAP. Lower your voice and power down your microphones. We will fix your opposition and buy your voters to add to our own. Resistance is futile. You will be quiescient. - Apologies to the Borg.

This is what I, as a non-politician, don't get: Why is it that one needs to fix the opposition (in the case of LHL), or vote against the opposition whatever the issue (in the case of the recent Msian parliamentary issue codenamed Teflon)? Why is it so hard to understand that the opposition too can love the country as much as those in power, and that what the two parties want should by right be one and the same? Unless one party is there for a totally different reason...

najah, just my two cents: in gomez's case, if indeed he staged the incident to try to discredit the election authority and the entire election process by implying that PAP was unfairly using the supposedly neutral election commission to prevent him from being nominated. surely that kind of challenge cannot go unanswered by any political party worth its salt. for PAP to wait until after the voting to "fix" him is 1) to show that PAP doesn't have to win by disqualifying the opposition and 2) to prevent a backlash if gomez was arrested before election date.
now, if gomez honestly screwed up the paper process then we should hope that singapore is governed by the like of gomez and not the PAP. perhaps then Malaysia will come out better in future negotiations.
let not compare our parliament with singapore's. we have opposition members who are better educated and smarter than most BN MP's and ministers. there's no way for inferior beings to win a debate but by mob rules.

I thought Gomez really lied? So what's wrong in saying that Gomez is a liar?

while, James is scapegoat of
the vote fell from 75% to 66%.
this fear tactics prevent future warriors.
But S'pore youths will pissed too.

LHL says he will "fix" the opposition.

So if Gomez is charge because he is "liar"; then why LHL is not charge under the Lionland act for "blackmail"?

As a Bolehand, we know what "fix" is really about : like BN controlled municipal councils providing terrible services to ADUN under opposition.

We have many ex-Singaporean friends in NZ that CONVERTED and BECAME Kiwis, one said to me after reading THE NEWS ;-), "Thank God I am now a Kiwi!" and I reply", "Thank God I am a Malaysian!" Ha ha ha.... GO FIGURE!!!

cy, stop making jokes about our neighbour lah. you want to tell us how many malaysians there are in nz? or australia?

James Gomez under police investigation
By Lee Ching Wern, TODAY

SINGAPORE: Workers' Party candidate James Gomez is under investigation by the police.

On Sunday afternoon, Mr Gomez was at the airport to catch a flight when he was stopped by immigration officials. Police officers later took him to the Police Cantonment Complex where he gave a statement. His passport and boarding pass were confiscated.

Mr Gomez left the complex after midnight. He told reporters: "I remain relaxed as usual, you know, and cooperate with the police and see how I can help them."

Asked whether charges would be filed, he said: "No, I don't know and I can't answer that. But all I can say (is) I've given a statement ... that took me six hours to put together."

A police spokesman told TODAY that they are investigating a "complaint" by the Elections Department against Mr Gomez.

During the election campaign last week, Mr Gomez had blamed the department for losing his minority certificate form, warning them of "consequences".

After video footage of the incident emerged, proving that Mr Gomez had not submitted his form, he apologised, saying that he had been distracted due to his busy schedule. He was, however, still asked to give a fuller explanation by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng, who said that Mr Gomez's actions did not seem to be an innocent mistake.

On Sunday morning, Mr Gomez went on a "thank you" parade around Aljunied GRC with his party colleagues to thank residents for their support after Saturday's polls, which the WP team lost to the PAP by 12 percentage points.

Before 4pm Sunday, Mr Gomez rushed to the airport to catch a flight to Sweden, where he works as a policy analyst.

At the airport, he was stopped by an immigration officer who asked him to wait in order for them to "do some checks", said Mr Gomez, to TODAY.

"They took me to a corridor and asked me to sit on a chair and wait. My passport and boarding pass had been taken from me," he said.

According to the WP candidate, a police official had told him that he was being investigated for a case of criminal intimidation. At about 5pm, Mr Gomez was escorted by three police officers to the Police Cantonment Complex, where CID officers interviewed him.

Workers' Party chairman Ms Sylvia Lim was also seen arriving at the Police Cantonment Complex shortly after 8pm.

She emerged from the building after three hours at 11pm.

She said she was called in to make a statement as a witness and she did not see Mr Gomez. The police report by the Elections Department was dated on Sunday, she revealed.

"We will try our best to cooperate within what we have to do under the law," she said. "The police have a duty to do, and we should follow the due process."

When asked if the party would issue a statement on the latest development, Ms Lim said: "I don't think in that sense it is a party issue, so we'll have to see." - TODAY /dt

1. James Gomez threw the first punch-he accused the election department for losing his minority certificate form, warning them of "consequences"; all without checking whether the said forms were still in his possession.

2. Would he have backed down if the incriminating CCTV footage was not made available?

3. He offered that "he had been distracted due to his busy schedule" is flimsy excuse, at best. If true, how to entrust such heavy responsibilities to an MP wanabe who can't safe keep such important documents properly? If not, then, the accusations are fabricated and malicious.

4. LKY gave James Gomez an enormous opportunity to take him to court by calling him a "liar" in full view of the public and recorded by the media. Sue Harry if he is on firm ground.

5. Gomez seems to have overplayed his hand and the marriage of convenience seems to have come to an end "When asked if the party would issue a statement on the latest development, Ms (Sylvia) Lim (Workers' Party chairman) said: "I don't think in that sense it is a party issue, so we'll have to see." - TODAY /dt

So Jeff, your friend seems to have bitten more than he can chew.

As far as laws abiding is concerned, Singapore strictly means business. No half closed eye’s case could be tolerated.

Well, we have to wait and see as it is still at the investigating stage. Integrity is a very important virtue for a politician. That is what the society emphasizes and why the administration of Singapore is comparatively cleaner than that of countries around the region.

If integrity is a problem, sorry to say that James may even have his job as an analyst threatened!

Fancy that he has been in Sweden for quite sometime and yet he could be so naive that he forgot he was in a high tech environment like Singapore where CCTV was a norm.

daniel, Kingkong : In facts, both your viewpoint sound valid. But in civil society standing ground and their own election law, it is ultimate bullshit.

Remember, the lionland authority harassed Gomez AFTER the election. While most of the claims/charges are suppose to be brought out by their election councils during the election period. In addition, LSL has abused(which learned by Bolehland BN) their power by using the public media as their stages during the election period.

And don't forget, why LSL are not charged for "BLAKCMAILING" the public and the opposing parties?

Moo_t,

LKY called Gomez “a liar “and invited him to sue him in court. Gomez said “I don’t want to sue “Ms (Sylvia) Lim said “We don’t have resources, we think about it after election “So, LKY repeated to call Gomez a liar after election and challenge him to sue. Let the court settle the issue and the people want to know that the election system is not only clean but also seen to be clean. Naturally, election matter is more important than the matter of Gomez during the election time and should be focused on in priority.

Does anybody sue LSL for blackmailing, abuse of power or harassment? I suppose people could do the same if there is enough evidence. That is how laws and orders work in the first world country!

Charging a person in court is not a simple matter unless you have all the evidence.

The political culture of Singapore is to emphasize on integrity and honesty. That is why their ministers, MPs are highly respected within the country as well as by the world. When LKY says something, the whole world pays attention. This is because his action is consistent to his talk and he has an outstanding report card, like his double distinction in Cambridge, a clean and efficient country to show the world.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
