Here's what Singapore's Budget Terminal looks like
The blog entry titled: LCCT... Shaking legs and banging balls has a pictorial response from reader Kevin Lam. He went to Singapore's Budget Terminal, which opened four days after Malaysia's LCCT. And came home satisfied.
Here are some pictures to give Malaysia a run for its money when it comes to low cost carrier terminal.
Dear Jeff,
I refer to your blog on our LCCT. I am a budget traveller and have been doing so for the last 4 months. Have seen and experienced a lot and recently, I took a flight in and out of Singapore's Budget Terminal (BT).
Here are some photos (Sorry about the quality). My comments :-
1 ) The BT is serviced by free shuttle bus that departs timely every 10 minutes. Bus ride is only 10 minutes (max). It cost me only SGD1.60 to take the train from city centre to the Changi Airport. TIMELY and at no extra cost. The NEW bus are specially designed to carry passengers PLUS their luggage (i.e. with place for luggage). First class.

2 ) The layout is simple, like our LCCT. But once you pass through the immigration, it's like a mini Changi. Outdoor smoking lounge has a lovely garden, free internet terminal, laptop zone, money changer, ATM machines, plenty of eateries to chose from, and shops for those who enjoy shopping.

3 ) There is no need for a departure lounge at the BT. Everyone hangs around the shop area until boarding is announced. Once you enter the entrance for boarding gate (see "Inside the Terminal - Shops Food Etc - Mini Replica of Changi 5", below). You automatically join a queue to board the aircraft.

The terminal staff will filter passengers travelling with children and senior/disabled passengers and they are shown to a separate queue line. (LCCT can learn a lot from this, but I guess Malaysia, in general, has too much pride (or ketuanan) to emulate even the best virtues).

4 ) The best part is the tarmac walk to the plane. Less than 40 meters!!!! The planes "nose-parked" at the relevant gates. Have yet to encounter what happens in the event that it rains, but I guess, less than 40 meters is bearable in light rain.
My 5 cents' worth... the terminal gives a very relaxing feel. Not pushy. The wait for boarding at the shops relaxes the passengers, which is definitely a plus point.
I guess having a departure lounge and containing a hundred or so people within the room is not healthy. People tend to get agitated after a long wait and tend to rush for the gates when boarding is announced -- just to get good seats.
Singapore BT dealt with that problem and I must say ... It's better to have the title of the BEST LCCT (which no doubt the BT is aiming for) rather than the FIRST LCCT in Asia.
Jeff, try the BT next time and let us all know what you think.
Regards
Kevin Lam
JEFF OOI says: I hope those who have made transit in budget terminals hubbed by EasyAir or JetStarAir, please share your experiences with pictures!

How much farther is our Sentral-KLIA compared to their city centre-Changi?
And when you say comfy, I see empty lah. But then ours I see like Pudu-wannabe only, but I guess that's budget for ya.

Sorry double post.
I tried JetStar AU (same parent company as JetStar SG?). Pretty crappy. Like riding on a Franklin. Really like balik kampung naik bas kinda experience, cept that the whites are the ones that are pushing and barraging to get the good seats and put their baggage.

You see ghosts lurking somewhere?
Its a matter of time before ours becomes like a pasar malam.
And come on you guys, our LC provides opportunity for the local MP there to give away a license to some bag man to run shuttle service and another to run the bus from KLLCCT to KL Central isn't it? When you got to take care of all these other things as well...you think Passenger convenience is foremost ontheir minds?

Jeff:
Wasn't it not very long ago when you made a comparison between KLIA and Changi and came away with the conclusion that KLIA is a better airport (or has better potential) than Changi ?
Our third world mentality means that we have no hope of catching Changi or even the new Bangkok International Airport. Services are granted to UMNO cronies, not to the most efficient operator or cheapest operator. No will to catch airport transport touts. Toilets constantly malfunctioning. Free computers not working after 6 months of installation as people have stolen the magnets from under each computer's mouse. Not enough airport limos during peak periods.
No use being Asia's first LCCT when it is likely to be retagged as Asia's worst LCCT.
Malaysia Boleh!

Some small points to note. I don't think it's fair to compare the cost of taking MRT to Changi vs cost of ERL to KLIA. In this case, country size does matter.
And BT's free shuttle bus is only from Changi Airport, I'm glad our LCCT bus is from Sentral and not KLIA.

Out of topic again but I can see that the steel columns (vertical elements) are fire-protected by means of encasing the columns in concrete. In other words, this terminal is built and design with the safety of occupants in mind!!! Unlike some other LCCT

Both Changi airport and KLIA wasted their money building these budget terminals. Now airport transfers got a lot more complicated. All these budget airlines wanted was parking space close to existing terminal buildings for their passengers to walk to and a large door for for easy access. Is that too difficult to manage?

sydput,
Changi's Terminal 1 and 2 are already at quite busy as it is. And there's a few low-cost carriers operating there. At least I know of JetStar, Tiger Airways, and soon AirAsia.
As for KLIA... here we've only got AirAsia. So it really didn't make any cow sense to build a separate LCCT that is inconvenient for passengers.

y2k, if you calculate the distance difference, I think KLIA is roughly 3 times the distance of Changi from the city, so the logical price of Mass Transit transport should be S$4.80, or about RM11. So RM35 is a rip off.
Don't believe? Take the KLIA Transit (instead of the Express) to say Putrajaya, and then take the next Transit to Sentral. Guess how much the total fare is??
Go figure.

limeu,
I still counldn't figure out the actual rate if we take a taxi from KLIA.
I once took a taxi ride from KLIA to Hotel of Golden Horses, and the taxi fare is RM90! I wonder if I opt for KLIA Transit, is it true that I need to go to KL Sentral then take a taxi to Golden Horse? What would be the cost? (RM35 + taxi/bus fare)
What is the taxi fare for both LCCTs?

There are two official taxi services, so called Budget and Premier. They arbitarily restrict the Budget Taxi to take only maximun 3 passengers. Premier just means an old Merc, Perdana or some old MPV.
To the unknowing, they will steer you to the premier taxi queue. So your RM90 trip is on the Premier taxi. The budget taxi should be about RM60.
The KLIA Express to Sentral is RM35. If you take the Transit to an intermediate station, and then catch the next train to the final station, the total works out to about RM18 only.
Taxis from Sentral also requires coupons, and again they try to steer you to the Premier queue ( the nearest counter from the train exit). To Palace of Golden Horses should be about RM20 I think (Budget).
Generally if you travel alone, KLIA Express to Sentral and then taxi makes sense. If there are two or more of you, forget the KLIA Express, take the taxi directly from KLIA.

As for the LCCT, no train (yet) but a bus to Sentral is a reasonable RM9, then again taxi.
Direct Taxi again in 2 types, and the Budget one is actually the city taxis that have gone up to drop off passengers. About RM60 too to the city, only problem with these Sagas is many have a big gas tank at the back, and you will NOT be able to fit big bags in. Otherwise you get a reasonable but bumpy journey down; the these Taxi Sagas has really lousy suspensions!

Whether anyone will agree with me or not, I felt that we were ripped off by expensive and bad service limo, bus and KLIA Express. Because of this, I am the rebellious one and support the kereta sapu.
You may say that I am wrong to support the touts but I will say government are doing bigger wrong by ripping us off and short changed us. I am not going to support those who rip us off big time. What say you?
Btw, most kereta sapu are offering much better cars than the legal limo, from brand new Waja to even Mercedes.

for me the LCCT looks very impressive. i've been to few budjet terminal around europe ie, ryan air's frankfurt hahn, rome, and paris. here, simple sandwich cost u about 6 euro, shuttle bus cost u at least 15 euro with a frequent of about once every hour for a 50-90km journey which takes about 1 hour, waiting area is pack with people siting, standind and even sits on the floor. in ryan air's paris terminal, the waiting area's made out of simple contruction thats look like refugee camp canopy. i'll be going again to frankfurt again next month(for world cup wuhuu) and i'll try to snaps some pics of the terminal to prove this.

Just to reply to an earlier remark about singapore having three LCC as compared to only one in KLIA. air asia is by far the biggest LCC in the region and combining the three singapore based LCC is still puny in comparison.

oops sorry. lion air from indonesia is air asia's biggest threat. So make that 2 LCC KLIA handles. Recently they made an order for 40 B737's from boeing as compared to 60 a320's from airbus. (hope firgures quoted is corrct) tiger air and others based in singapore does not have the hinterland to be succesful. If I am not mistaken. air asia is trying to make senai as the lcc airport for singapore, meaning, passnegr drop off in senai and take a bus into singapore, but the bus service was stopped by singapore authoriries to protect their market in this sector.

I travel to Singapore frequently to catch Tigerair or jetasia to hong kong and macao and soon to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. I catch the midnite bus from Puduraya and each there in the morning to catch the flights. I have stopped travelling on airasia becoz their last minute fare are too unrealistically high and MAS is out of reach. The new budget terminal is fine with me as it caters well to our needs as low cost travellers. In fact shopping at the terminal is cheaper than Changi as they are giving promotional discounts now. Food is affordable. And the best thing is that Jetstar still operates from Changi and has allocated seats. Tiger air has made a good inroad into China via Haikow, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Why is airasia not flying to these lucrative routes? I think it is politics again.
