Disneyland for southern Johor?

Who says PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is 'listless' and not capable of mega projects?

This afternoon, as Malaysiakini was preparing to publish its interview with Dr Mahathir, words had it that Abdullah, who is now in Japan, is scheduled to meet officials from Tokyo Disneyland. The agenda: To bring Disneyland to Nusajaya, near the Second Link in southern Johor.

Little Birds said the financial circle has been tipped off that officials from UEM Land, a 100% subsidiary of UEM World, are tagging along with Abdullah in Tokyo right now. The PM's contingent also includes Azman Mokhtar, the MD of Khazanah, which is also UEM World's largest shareholder.

Abdullah is said to have already met top Disney officials early this month when he was attending the World Congress for IT (WCIT2006) in the US.

People familiar with the Disneyland-Nusajaya overture believe that Abdullah's team is in Tokyo to make a serious pitch, with sweeteners that may include offering Disney an internationally competitive package of incentives.

Though the key FDI barrier in Malaysia takes the form of the 30% bumiputra ownership requirement and land ownership issues, Little Birds said certain present investment policies for the commercial and tourism sector may be liberalised for the purpose.

Should the pitch be successful, any announcement of Disney making an entry into Malaysia would improve dramatically the values of land near Nusajaya, said financial analysts. And UEM World is the biggest landowner in Nusajaya, a plan crafted during the Mahathir era.

Incidentally, it was officially announced at a Malaysian Business function this afternoon that Dr Mahathir would be leaving for Japan tomorrow.

Fantastic idea. Better be fast on this one. Else our southern neighbor will grap it. I think Disney is not teaming up with any casino operators there anyway.

When this is successfully launched, well, the tourists will then have more reasons to visit JB :- The adults can gamble in Singapore casinos, whereas their kids can have fun in the Nusajaya Disneyland just a short trip away.

And what about compete head on with those Singapore casinos. The Gov could easily allow more casinos to be set up which are open ONLY to foreign tourists, just like what Koreans do. Imagine an Islamic country like Egypt can have many casinos in its tourist spots, I do not see why we secular Malaysia can not have more. We just need to open up and sell to the tourists or customers what they want.

say good bye to sunway lagoon then?

Oh, heard a few months ago that he will receive an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) in Japan. Might be during this trip.

do we really need another disneyland on earth? we already hv our very own DUMBO and GOOFY sitting in cabinet entertaining us. The only setback is that we cant watch them live on TV.

Disneyland in Nusajaya?

Better be sure to get our "friendly" neighbor to agree to it if needed. We do not want another "creative issue" raise like the scenic bridge.

By the way, should not we start changing our life style due to raising costs of living?. Is having Disneyland a need or wants?

Referrendum from the people of Johor should be appropriate, don't you think so?

common guys, try to think on the bright side. it's an attractive point for the SEA tourist. before that, anyone mind to tell me who is the owner of UEM World?

no wonder uem shares moving like hot cakes the past few weeks.

It can provide a much-needed lift for Johor, and the viability of the second link, as well as tourism Malaysia generally.

But there remains a nagging question; what role did Khazanah play in the decision, given its boss is the majority shareholder of the company whose land looks slated for the location?

Expect to see more of such 'happenstances' in the coming months/years, together with the deafening silences that will greet scornful rakyats' queries.

Secondly, if the project takes off, will it be part of some greater plan for tourism Malaysia? Such as making it part of a total package that can include perhaps a couple of the pulaus, and the hillside resorts? Will both components be finally spruced up so as not to belittle the intelligence and appreciation of firstworld tourists, what more basho-ed locals?

Thirdly, given how dismayed are visitors to Disneylands all over the world whenever they pay hefty entries but have to queue long and just get only a few rides in the end, will locals have a say in how it will be operated so as to deliver value for money to visitors and tourists, not just the bank account of the eisner's of the world?

For once, amidst the derelicts of past and present megaprojects, assailed by the smoke of cronyism and corruption around, if to be done, do it right the first time, transparently, cost-effectively and leakage-less.

I don't see how this would be a feasible reality...

Disneyland Hong Kong just recently opened. That caters for Far East and supposedly the SEA region. Having a Disneyland in Malaysia is just not gonna cut it...

Will probably only attract foreign tourists from Singapore, and Sumatra... that's about it... given that HK is quite accessible now with more low-cost carriers flying there... what's the point of having a Disneyland here? Compete with Singapore again? Geez...

Yes...i can confirm that Nusajaya is being consider as a potential location for Disneyland. Due to work ethics, i'm not able to say more about it.

However, I also heard that when Disneyland landed in HK, it was supposedly to be the last Disneyland in Asia.

ROFL. Disneyland in Malaysia? First Bolehland political correct question, is it HALAL?

Looking at Malaysia themepark track record, you will notice most are either bankrupt or down sized. The answer is obvious : Malaysian GNP. OTH, Hong Kong is rely on massive mainland China tourist and other regional middle class tourist (since Tokyo Disneyland just too expensive).

Apalah dah jadi dgn kerajaan kita ni. Mungkin Ketua Kerajaan kita ni mau sangat main golf dgn Tikus Mickey ataupun ada udang di sebalik batu yang berkaitan dgn UEM?????

Personally I think ti is going to be a very VERY long time before Disney will give "real serious" thought to Malaysia.

Disney builds itself on reputation of some of the absolute best customer service, a fantasy land, problems resolved in lightnig speed, true effecincy and complete harmony within it's parks. I do not think Malaysia is anywhere near ready to be able to managed such a place on par with Disney's expectations. I am not talking down on Malaysia, just highlighting the truth, we all know there is high corruption, politics is in every major project here, major projects open with a bang and then afterwards drop fast, opened when not ready, etc. if anything I would expect Disney to go to Singapore insteadof here if it were possible.

Maybe now our southern neighbours would stare in envy after their refusal to co-build the scenic bridge. Maybe that's the PM's trump card all this while.

I have been a huge fan of Disney for a long time and apart from its animated features and short animations, I also remember looking at the Disneyland guide for hours when I was little. Now....given that there are rumours of Disney setting up shop in Malaysia, I am very very excited - even more so than having the Olympics or the world's tallest building (I must admit that Petronas Towers too is like a dream come true as well hehehe).

My point is that I am not too sure why there are legions of people out there whom are so negative over Disney's plan to have a theme park here. In fact that there are these kind of mentality too when Dr. M annouces plans to bring in F1 to our soil and such mentality prevails to this day even when the annual F1 rakes in lots of financial and technical rewards to Malaysians. I have no clue why?

A Disney resort would not only rakes in financial gains but also puts Malaysia on the map just like the Petronas Twins did. There are only 5 Disney locations around the world with one each in Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Orlando USA and Anaheim USA. Sucessful ones such as that of Anaheim, Orlando and Tokyo have multiple themparks in a single location.

Apart from stimulating the construction and tourism industry, a Disney themepark would potentially be a creative hub for Malaysia. Many artistes in the US owes their beginnings to Disney. Any Disney themeparks would also spurs the broadcasting and multimedia industry as there would definitely be an increase in TV productions. There are endless benefits that are tied to a Disney location so it might take a long time to list it all out here.

"Thirdly, given how dismayed are visitors to Disneylands all over the world whenever they pay hefty entries but have to queue long and just get only a few rides in the end, will locals have a say in how it will be operated so as to deliver value for money to visitors and tourists, not just the bank account of the eisner's of the world?" - quote from Neil

Firstly, even the locals within the US do not have a say how the themeparks are run. Disney - being the pioneer in large-scale themeparks, have ample experience in that department. In fact, all Disney themeparks are indeed localised even within the US a notable example of Spanish being broadcasted in the PA alongside English at Walt Disney World due to the sizeable Hispanic population in Florida. Crowd control is legendary in Disney. To combate long queues, a revolutionary but a simple idea of Fast Pass are introduced. I managed to have been on every single ride in Magic Kingdom, WDW (with the exception of the Mad Hatter's Tea party and Dumbo the Flying Elephant)all in 2 days. With the FastPass, I breezed thru the 45mins queue of Space Mountain. Although there is a slight FastPass queue, it was just for about 5 mins.

Well......I must admit that it is true. Having been in the customer service line, I notices that Malaysia's cust service still have much to catch up not just on etiquette alone but also the "going the extra mile" part.

What I mean is for example: ......a few years ago when I was at the French Pavillion inside EPCOT, I was browsing thru the collectables of Beauty and the Beast when the staff offered me to watch the marvelous wrap-around motion picture, "Impressions de France". I was a bit surprised cause it was 5 mins to closing. I accepted the offer thinking that there might be some people inside the theatre waiting for the last person to go in so I paced up my steps. I walked into an empty cinema and moments after that, the 180 degrees show starts. You see...they showed an extraordinary 180 degrees movie just for me alone and it was during closing time! In Malaysia we would be lucky if they wouldn't chase us out.

Apart from that, my other great customer service experience happens just a day afterwards when I failed to use my Public Bank Visa Electron card. You see....I was new to the card and it was very foolish of me not to enquire further when getting it. So I tried to make a purchase and it didn't go thru. I was advised to go the cust serv and information counter of Epcot centre to have that sorted out. When I arrived there, I was greeted and I showed my card to them. They have not seen a Visa Electron or have heard of it before so they called a certain number. They passed me the phone and I got a shocked of my life when I heard - "Public Bank....How may I Help you?". After I knew that I did not transfer my money into the card (initially I thought that it debit straight from my PB acc), I hung up (to cut the call short) and asked the gentleman how much the phone call cost. It is free. I have been telling these two cust serv stories to a lot of Malaysians and to many it sounded like fiction.

So well.....I think that should Disney come to Malaysia, it would definitely improvises the cust serv industry.

for most people whom have not even been to the following :-

1. bukit merah laketown resort
2. desa water park
3. sunway lagoon ...

wants to have disneyland ?

compare to :-

Florida ? North US : how many millions of ppl ?

HK/China ? how many *billions* of people ?

France ? how many *millions* of people ?

Japan ? how many *millions* of people ?

with malaysia barely having a 20million populace, Disney would have to find *CONVINCING* figures to put one here ...

If history serves well, Genting last time would like to have one to be built at the foothill due to *COOLER* weather in the 80s but it got turned down for the above same reasons ...

Disneyland in Johor ? unless u got millions that can rival the number of populations like elsewhere ...

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
