I bet AAB will not stop this.
Can TDM do it? But how can he? Gradually, more of his skeletons will be brought out of the cupboards.
As long as there is no independent body to fight corruption these things will continue? The young ones learn very fast and well, particularly they pay the 'brains' behind them to strategise and do it for them. Alone, can they do it? No way!

Please remember this is Bolehland, i have a feeling that ECM Libra-Avenue deal will goes through at the end. Just look at one fine example: Southern Bank & CIMB.

Looks like somebody try to imitate Thaksin trails.

The fox's tail is revealing... really really disappointing.

hey dont simply talk abt it else KJ will SUE you. We cant fight them on this. IN Msia we cant sue the govt( u can sue lah but for sure you cant win) but those in the govt can sue you. If the young ones dont do it now, wait till when msia is bankrupt?

Folks

There are more worms in the can than we malaysians have thought with all the hanky panky manipulation by UMNO cronies and members on high flying corporate deals.

Nepotism + insider dealings +political influence +cronyism + abuse of power.

Looks like Pak Lah's regime is just another shadow of his predecessor when it comes to business linked to politics.

The son in law's fingers are all over the pie in Malaysian politics and in Malaysian high flying business and this is the young upstart considered the future Prime Minister.

Time for ACA to keep a file or cabinet of files on the young man as he has a long promising career ahead of him.

It mays to be a son in law of a Prime Minister, after all.

Folks

Let the worms fall out.

you said....Looks like somebody try to imitate Thaksin trails.

I thought the whole thing resembles the hanky panky of Suharto's children. Deals are made that appear legal but morallly illegitimate.

my humble one cent.

welcome to real life. i believe if anyone of you are in power, you'll be doing the same thing too.

I won’t be surprised if Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi does not read the alternative media so probably he is deaf and blind to the goings-on.

When Tun Dr Mahathir was PM, he strove to get information from unconventional sources. He found ways to get access to information that has been blocked, filtered or twisted by individuals with vested interests.

Furthermore, Tun Dr Mahathir did not consult nor confide in his family members on how to govern this country. In a TV interview, Tun Siti Hasmah said that Tun Dr Mahathir did not believe in pillow talk. She herself did not know that he wanted to step down as UMNO President at the UMNO General Assembly until he announced it at the rostrum.

Does Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi have the moral strength to say “NO” to his family?

Does he have the ability to be a morally upright role model for this country?

AAB will tell u "HUH" Apa itu ECM? All he knows is that MYTEAM match is coming soon. The brainchild of his SIL. No matter how ridiculous it still got off with many sponsors lining up. Imagine after this project, they are gonna have another MYTEAM for Sepak Takraw and Guli.

That he had said he didn't know about the transaction until told, that he had remained eerily silent on this matter since then, speaks volumes.

That his son-in-law knowing how the father-in-law is faced up by the country on this, and yet remains silent on the matter but so voluble on others, also speaks volumes.

For precedence, they can't use the M2 argument that if someone is a PM, does it mean his sons, relatives can't do business, for it was exactly because they did that administrative integrity was tainted, and so used by others of greedier miens as adequate reason to enlarge their own holdings by means even Judge Sri Ram would consider foul.

So, what goes? Nothing will be done on this spectre and stain. In public duty, all you need is one taint and it will come back again.

Unless he releases full details on how and when the award was made, that stain will stick even on teflon (which is cancerous, by the way).

But how is he going to do that - to prove the committee which had made the award didn't take cognizance of the applicant's status?

There's a Chinese saying that goes like this:

"Rather than bringing benefit to other people, better bring benefit to own people."

I don't know if the Japanese have such a saying. Will check with my Japanese relatives and write again.

Read in the paper this morning that our RM4.4B public transport fund has been "wiped out" due to fuel prices going up again..then saw the evening news where we just signed a contract to purchase new Colt M4 assault guns for the army costing RM1.1B...
I guess guns are a bigger priority compared to buses for the masses..are we planning a raid maybe?? Across a certain bridge down south..*ta dem..ta de de de de demmm...ta dem..ta de de de de dem...tune for Bridge over the River Kwai*...

There's another Chinese saying that goes, "All ten fingers of the hands only can bend inwards" - Meaning, you take care of your family members first...

Is your memory so short? You make Dr Mahathir seem like a saint -- what happened to the bailout of MISC? Involving his son, allegedly also causing firction with his then DPM Anwar Ibrahim ...

Well, it's easy enough to demand Pak Lah not to practise co=ronyism, nepotism etc -- but aren't all these inherited by Pak Lah from the previous regime?

It's UMNO realpolitik -- I'm not supporting ex-PM because he played a huge part in bringing Malaysia to the present state of "scandalous" affairs -- Remember, ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY!

I'm not supporting the present PM's cronies now -- I'm just pointing out thee "illogic" of your statements and deficient memoory recall.
PeAce to All.
We deserve the Gomen the majority voted for -- Masochistic Malaysians!

Okay, whats the lost in this deal ..i see everyone pointing fingers and trying to be priests in saying this is morally wrong!

i will appreciate if someone can explain which part of this is wrong? is this wrong because KJ has a stake? Or wrong because Avenue will loose out, hence Government being a share holder will loose out? Howcome no one talk about this, except point ouit that it's morally wrong because of KJ's involvement?

I dont see anything wrong, as long as it's transparent! Thsi kind of deal is very normal in countries like singapore, look at who controls singtel, temasek or the singapore transportation? MM Lee's remark is simple, they are competant and came up with their own cpabilities ...of course no one beleives this, hence as someone said above, legally right, morally wrong?

So it is a universal law that family members of politicians & prime ministers cannot get involved in business? Who's law?

I hope someone can add value to this conversation by sharing with less knowledgeable people like me on why this is wrong as the malaysiakini article doesnt seem to give facts, just mere ultimatum to MP's to put a stop to this!

goks

In Malaysia, perception and truth has very thin line separating them.

I hope you are not too dead sure that everything done in Malaysia is transparent.

What is legal and transparent may not be legitimate.

Prime Minister Taksin in Thailand did a legal and transparent thing when he sold off his business interest and the transaction did not involve paying the taxes... yes legal and transparent. But he was forced down because it was morally illegitimate and brought the country to a standstill until he was forced out.

You think the Govt and Umno Youth involving the financial interest of its deputy leader cum PM's son in law will allow such huge civil demonstration against a sitting Govt or PM?

What this brouhaha calls for is whether the son-in-law had taken undue advantage, by his political and familial connections, and resulted in an uneven playing field.

I see no harm if there is a public for an investigation of any WRONG-DOING in this deal.

This axis of Kallimullah-Khairy ( KK Axis) smells. And if it smells, there must be rat somewhere.

Folks

Talking about the KK Axis smell, and now knowing that Kallimullah is a close buddy of Nor Yacop, the Deputy Finance Minister, then there must be a BIG rat somewhere in this deal.

Or was this deal discusses at a MAMAK stall, as I would presume Kallimullah and Nor Yacop both loved teh tarik very much, as I do.

The writer said "I am quite amazed to see that he could not see the immoral side of this deal, and perhaps would even personally allow it to go through"

But isn't morality something for DBKL to look at?

After living in Malaysia for so long one would have thought the word morality only applies to things like couple smooching behind some bushes or holding hands when they are not married! And event here they are confused. I suppose Pak Lah will be satisfied that since morality in Malasyia is confined to what the fundamentalists prescribe, there is nothing immoral here.

Hi,

No one has answered this concern of mine:

"I hope someone can add value to this conversation by sharing with less knowledgeable people like me on why this is wrong as the malaysiakini article doesnt seem to give facts, just mere ultimatum to MP's to put a stop to this!"

So ...what is the wrnog part in this deal ..besides the KK Axis? Can someone share who is going to loose out?

I think Thaksin was WROGN in having Shincorp sold TAX FREE! Now thats wrong, because people loose out!

Here ...can someone enlighten me who will loose and how will they loose?

goks

Thaksin was NOT wrong, even the legal experts say so and even the people said so, ie in the eyes of the law. But it was not legitimate.

We do not know what's the deal currently being hatched by the KK Axis. So, the letter in Malaysiakini and the brouhaha made here are to instigate the matter... and the only to get the Govt to respond is to imply wrongdoing first. Otherwise, it will be too late after the KK Axis got away scot-free.

OK Noted ... but i'm sure if there wasnt a rotten fish, the smell would not have already been looming.

My gutt feel says that if soemone can make so much noise..he knows whats wrong if theres soemthing..ot he's from the "other camp" that wants to confuse ppl to bring KJ down!

I'm waiting ..still waiting for more news!

goks

You said....I'm waiting ..still waiting for more news!

It will be coming!

F&H, allow me to correct your correction:

Last sentence should read:

"It pays to be a son in law of a Prime Minister, after all."

goks and others who eresponded to his Q; here I attempt an answer and add more Qs:

With a change of regime from ex-PM Dr Mahathir from Nov 2003 to Pak Lah, there was definitely a shift in the politics-corporate axis -- that's inevitable as UMNOputras are dominant in both politics and BIG business.

So is it any surprise about PM's son-in-law Khairy J's star shining now? Exploiting to the hilt to build up his business empire, making use of cronies like Kalaimullah Hassan, etc, etc? The answer here is a BIG "NO".

What is different now is that the transactions are now more open and reported -- would such corporate moves, otr the Scenic Bridge that was cancelled, have received such spotlight as is happening now compared with Dr Mahathir's time?

Again, my own answer is "NO".

So the good thing now is that these potential business deals have to be conducted wiith nmore accountability -- hence such questions are asked.
Such questions -- of 10X magnitued such as MISC bailout of billions, and Dr Ling LS' sons borowings of billion plus, were never spotlighted with such questions. Only after many years when the "culprits" have left the scene to enjkjoy the loot.

Now with Khairy and Kalaimullah making their corporate moves under great spotlight, if they commit "breaches" of the orders akin to MISC (involving one of Dr Mahathir's sons, which one -- yyou fill in the gap!--and Ling Jr'(now an MCA ministerial aspirant -- God help Malaysians if we allow tyhis happen!) -- they won't get away so easily because the 5th Estate bloggers won't leave them along. Hence, the 5th Estate must equip themselves with information and use their power intelligently. Yes, ask proper question, like, digressing a bit:

* In awarding the contract to Gerbang Perdana, to build the ICQ at more than RM1billion, who were the decision-makers; who were the BENEFIIACRIES?

** In "scrapping" the Crooked Bridge, what's Pak Lah's motivation/ratuionale?
Who are the "losers" and "gainers"?

In either scenario of the bridge being built OR being cancelled, one big LOSER is the Rakayt the taxpayers.
The gainers -- Gerbang Perdana in both instances.
Who are the people behind GP? Your guess ios as good as mine because they have been on the scene way before Pak Lah took over the PMship.

There is a Chinese saying: "Paint a portrait, don't have to paint the intestines, mate!"

MGG Pillai left us a valuable legacy -- the challenge now for everyone in Blogosphere is to fill the vacuuim!?

desiderata

you said.....would such corporate moves, otr the Scenic Bridge that was cancelled, have received such spotlight as is happening now compared with Dr Mahathir's time?

It was Tun Mahathir that took the bold step to bring Malaysia to the world of internet and superhighway and a commitment not to control internet news .

Although during TDM's some half baked UMNO Youth did try to shut down Malaysiakini by asking to carry away 19 computers (what a laugh !! ) and the mainstream media instigating the Bukit Aman boys to harass Jeff Ooi and MackZul.

Pak Lah regime is the beneficiary of this legacy of TDM and for which we are able to communicate now on internet and expose the hanky pankys with our views.

Credit is due to TDM for the internet we have, and which provided an alternative channel to expose wrongdoings, a recourse not easily available even 5 years ago.

It is the march of time rather than credit to Pak Lah's openness. He had no choice. You can't regulate the internet, except to intimidate those with servers or known to live inMalaysia with ISA or jail terms.

The other way is to shut down all the ISPs in Malaysia or block access to certain websites like the "Muslim Priest" did prevent NST staff toacces Screenshot at the office.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
