Little Bird: "Follow the money..."

I can never underestimate some Screenshots readers for their well-placed positions when it comes to their information channels. Hail the Little Birds!

On the day (April 12, 2006) the Prime Minister's Office issued the terse, one-paragraph announcement to cancel the crooked bridge project, an SMS came in three-and-a-half hours after I had blogged about it.

The SMS reads:

it would b interesting to note
who's connected to the sand
company. sources told me
xxxx xxxx has a hand in it

I initially took it with a pinch of salt. Now Dr Mahathir has made it the eye of the storm.

"All in all it is clear that the Malaysian Government is more interested in selling sand to Singapore than to build the bridge. [...]

"That there should be any Malaysian leader willing to entertain this idea, to destroy Malaysian seas to satisfy Singapore speaks badly of his love for his country."

'Follow the money'... Deep Throat told the reporters in Watergate.

This sends chills up my spine keeping the name of the 'Malaysian leader' to myself.

Is this a bout of (Mahathir's) nationalism vs. (A Malaysian Leader's) rent-seeking commercialism? We still need to let the news break just as the Rashomon Effect and Confidence deficiency persist to maim the rakyat.

Whet are appetites and then take back the scrumptious meal now did ya? Haha I'm waiting in eager anticipation.

JEFF OOI says: It's apiece of information that came privy to me and yet I have no means of confirming it at this point in time. Let the news break, or else I am seriously guilty of rumours mongering, and defamation suit would come.

This can be really big.

cheers

So, that makes it seem like Pak Lah had no choice but to terminate the deal when he saw so much sh*t under the bridge!!! Talk about getting the 'family jewels' wedged in between two wooden horses...

Folks

.....and the mystery deepens further.

We are yet to see the bottom of this pit.

Hail to Dr. M for holding the torchlight to lead us tosee in the darkness as we search for the culprits at the bottom of this scandalous pit.

"Call Mr. Holmes here, Dr. Watson, for we have an unsolved mystery".

hmm, this issue is getting more and more interesting...come on jeff who's the person? suspense la..

Now I'm like chasing after a TV series. Really exciting, Jeff! Can't wait to see what happens next.

SHA?? possible..*wink* wink

JB GO??KJ again??..

kenapa pula selalu panggil mat salleh 'Watson' dan 'Holmes' untuk percara kecil ni? Ex-IGP Rahim juga boleh siasat kes ni!

The ultimate hypocrite:

Before the Asian Financial Crisis, hot foreign money are welcomed to Bursa Malaysia because all the cronies are happy. Stock market capitalization went up by billions overnight and everybody is happy.

When the crisis hit, the same money that pushed the market up now pushed it now. Now, they are the culprits. The Jewish conspiracy. George Soros. Speculators. But the speculators were also the one who pushed the market up and you were happy then.

When Bank Negara was speculating in the forex market big time, and winning, it caused consternation among other forex players in the world. The cocky response from you know who - it is active reserve management. But when BN lost billions of RM, you know who cried foul.

Same for cornering the tin market and got whacked eventually. Who was the one who whacked Malaysia - George Soros.

And now sand. When his own cronies have the sand concsessionaires, all is well and good. When these concessionaires are replaced by the new administration, the same culprit cried foul. Oh, how patriotic.

Reminds me of this fictictious character who likes to visit brothels and sow his wild oats. All is fine, and no complaints. But one day, he got syphillis, or worse, AIDS, and started railing against prostitution. See, the double standards? When he was screwing around but didn't catch any vile diseaases, everything is hunky dory. The minute he contracted AIDS, he becomes pious and started preaching against the ills of prostitution. How can any upright man disagree with him now? He talks so much sense now. He is so moral. So patriotic. How can any morally upright man disagree with our new found hero - that prostitution is bad for society. Ah, but I say - why is he so pious now?

Same for the stock market and forex trading. When he is winning, he is smart and claim credit for it. But when he loses, suddenly forex speculation is bad. Suddenly, foreign money is bad. Don't be taken by such converts. Ask yourself - why the sudden change?

Follow the money ...

Ah yes. I keep forgetting that you do not enjoy the same privileges of anonimity as us. However I do seriously doubt that in this case, or in that of any other rumour, that anything would be revealed to the public en masse. Investigative journalism here was never really a great burgeoning field.

Govt hits back at constant attacks by Mahathir

Prolonged sniping by ex-PM could lead to impression of a political crisis, says Syed Hamid

By Carolyn Hong
The Straits Times

Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar turned the tables on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday with a strong response that signalled the government could be losing patience over the former prime minister's constant sniping about an aborted bridge project.

Responding to Tun Dr Mahathir's latest attack on the government on Thursday for negotiating with Singapore on the sale of sand as a trade-off for the bridge, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid yesterday said he found this argument 'strange'.

He pointed out that Malaysia had supplied sand to Singapore for two decades when Tun Dr Mahathir was prime minister. It only stopped in 1997.

'He knows that the sale of sand has been done before. A lot of the reclamation of Singapore used Malaysian sand, in the 1980s and 1990s,' Datuk Seri Syed Hamid told reporters.

Tun Dr Mahathir, who proposed the bridge 10 years ago, has been trading words with the government since his successor, Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, scrapped the plan to build a bridge to replace the Causeway two weeks ago.

In his latest remarks, Tun Dr Mahathir implied that there was something amiss about Malaysia being so keen to sell sand to Singapore, feeding into speculation that certain politicians were merely eyeing lucrative contracts.

Yesterday, newspapers here reported extensively on Tun Dr Mahathir's criticism of the Malaysian Foreign Ministry's explanation of the government's decision to scrap his plan for a bridge.

All the major dailies carried the former premier's response to the Foreign Ministry's statement.

It followed a letter he wrote to grassroots Umno politicians last week in which he not only took the government to task over the bridge but also complained that his views were not being reflected in the media.

Datuk Seri Syed Hamid, who is reported to have been directed to respond to Tun Dr Mahathir's statements, warned yesterday that prolonged sniping by Tun Dr Mahathir could lead to the impression that Malaysia was in a political crisis.

'What is important is that the issue does not become one that will split our people. Our economy is growing, there is the Ninth Malaysia Plan, and investor confidence.

'If we do not stop the quarrelling, it will be of no benefit the country,' he said.

Tun Dr Mahathir had the right to disagree, he said, but the reality was that a new leadership could take actions that differed from the previous administration's.

He reiterated that the government had not aborted the project on a whim but had acted in the best interests of the country.

The project could not go on without Singapore's agreement, but this could not be secured without accepting the conditions of sand and airspace, both of which were opposed by Malaysians.

He added that he did not expect Tun Dr Mahathir to accept this explanation or to stop expressing his views, but the government would not reverse its decision on the bridge.

It is not known where this open bickering will lead, but one thing is clear: Tun Dr Mahathir will not be the first to stop. He returns home from a vacation in London on Monday.

PM Abdullah is unlikely to get into a direct confrontation with his predecessor as he has reportedly told senior politicians that he will not respond directly to the attacks. The relevant Cabinet ministers will reply when necessary.

Can someone help me here - I can't follow TDM's logic.

AAB cancelled the bridge project because it would entail having to sell sand to Singapore as a trade-off. By not proceeding with the bridge AAB is in fact saying he does not want to sell sand. So why TDM keeps putting words in AAB's mouth that AAB is keen to sell sand?

As Syed Hamid pointed out, Malaysia had supplied sand to Singapore for two decades when Tun Dr Mahathir was prime minister. It only stopped in 1997. So who was the one benefitting from the sales of sand?

Could it be that the previous sand concessionaires have been replaced or about to be replaced by the new team?

Sand, Airspace and Water

they were God's gift to humanity.

Malaysia and Singapore coming to blows trying to trade them as economic commodities on the international political arena.

All the Prophets, Religious Teachers and Gurus in all major religions are turning in their graves.
