A 'Wong' a Sikh?
How wrong MyKad!
This entry is a follow-up to the April 17 topic titled: Confidence Deficiency ( 1 ) ...Hello MyKad, Hello IRIS.
We learned that Singapore will not allow Malaysians to use MyKad as an entry pass into the island-state -- a bilateral decision made about a year ago -- before we first sort out problems arising from the numerous incidents of inaccuracies in the 'smart' identity card.

Subject: MyKad Issues
Dear Jeff,
I'm actually a long time reader of your blog and find it very interesting. Even TMnet CEO featured your site link in their recent broadband forum held in Kota Kinabalu recently.
Anyway, it just happens that I was reading Star online today on MyKad information discrepancies in the chip. Since the introduction by Astro to enable all subscribers to read their MyKad chip information on the decoder, our family took the opportunity to do so and to verify the details. I am a Chinese with sino-native background and Buddhism religion. When I read my MyKad, to my shock, I found out that my religion was registered as SIKHISM!
How can one with a Chinese surname appears to be a Sikh? Thinking that NRD would make more mistake, I also read my parents' MyKads and found out that they were also all registered as SIKHISM as their religion! My father was telling me that he is going to NRD office and ask the officers if he looked like a Singh at all and how can this mistake be done.
Another matter also was that, under the race detail, my father and brother was registered as HOKCHIU.Now, what kind of race is HOKCHIU? How did NRD come up with this definition? I would have thought race would consist of only MALAY, INDIAN, CHINESE, KADAZAN, etc.
I'm still pondering what are the procedures in NRD to get this wrong information corrected.
Thanks!
Regards,
JMV Wong
Kota Kinabalu
Please note that critical information about reader JMV Wong has been intentionally erased to protect his identity and privacy. However, I was given a screencapture to authenticate the full load of his MyKad information as read off an Astro decoder over Channel 800.
Several Screenshots readers have informed this blogger that your MyKad information can be read using an Astro decoder. Screenshots has tested and found it to be true.If your creditcards are linked, the 16-digit creditcard numbers can also be displayed.
Meanwhile, can someone send this book, Bunny Suicides, to our Minister in charge of MyKad for a job well done?
How to read MyKad info using Astro decoder
If you have Astro installed at home, you could check your MyKad info using the Astro decoder.
Below are the steps:
- Choose channel 800
- Select MyKad Info
- Insert your MyKad (card facing down or up depending on your decoder model) info the second slot of the Astro decoder
- Your MyKad Info (name, address, IC number, birth date, religion) will appear on your TV screen
N.B. According to Astro, you may check your credit card info as well.

Wong, some of my family members also have some mistake in our mykad. What we did was we went to NRD, fill in a form, and got it corrected. However, there is a charge of RM10.

If NRD made the mistake in the FIRST place, why should WE pay RM10 to get it corrected?!?! This is daylight robberY!!

NRD has made errors in the past at the expense and inconvinience of the rakyat. Remember the Gender issue whereby the last digit denotes whether you are a male/female with the use of odd/even number? Well, for Mykad application, when a friend of mine who is well aware of his problem went to NRD to apply for his Mykad but the staff didnt notice any odd thing abt his IC number. Everything went on as usual. When he collected his card, to his horror he saw the word PEREMPUAN in front of his Mykad right smack underneath his male-ly photo. All in it took him 3 trips to get his Mykad corrected. First of cos u hv the usual Pegawai not in/ on leave crap. During that time the nude squatgate scandal was hot and my friend was jokingly telling them whether he needed to strip nude to prove his manlyhood. Having said this, it is the onus for applicants to check their details before leaving the counter as they do hv the reader at the collection centre, at least the centre where i took mine. This is what we call the 1st world infrastructure but 3rd world mentality workers. They just dont gv a darn abt their work quality. If it is wrong, then they expect YOU to be inconvinienced. IRIS shares are hot these few days. Any idea why? Anything got to do with the blunders these ppl are making in the issuance of Mykad?

/// Wong, some of my family members also have some mistake in our mykad. What we did was we went to NRD, fill in a form, and got it corrected. However, there is a charge of RM10. ///
streetz, what you said about the RM10 charge is interesting. Given the numerous errors that have been discovered, and the many more that have not been found, could these be deliberate errors so that such fees can be made?
If not, I have a business proposition for you. Let's take over the administration of MyKad. Deliberately foul up all the details. With millions of cards and RM10 per correction, just think how much money we can make from this.
And this is just for starters. These are genuine cards. How about some extra income by producing clones?
Any JV partners out there?

Wong,
They can be forgiven if your surname is 'Phua' coz they might be confused by watching too much of that across-the-causeway sitcom Phua Chu Kang. Afterall in reality, they knew that the funny guy is Gurmit Singh. But a Wong... hmmm do you wear a turban?

Jules, you are right its daylight robbery to charge RM10 for their mistakes, but stretch a little further.. its not about RM10, its denial of their own mistakes. When you pay the RM10, its like a penalty, it goes down on record like its your mistake... Perhaps, wide media coverage would force these incompetant civil servants to admit their mistakes.

Damn, now I regret not photocopying the form where you put down all your details. If I have such records, I would show this to them.
As if ONE mistake done in one family is not enough that they need to do THREE mistakes! All under Sikhism religion when the surname clearly states a chinese one. In one, even stated race as CHINESE. So how can a chinese has sikhism religion!
RM10 charge for correction is even more FRUSTRATING! Who made the bloody mistake in the first place. It is not that we keyed in the information ourselves.

Very scary, this will change racial composition in Malaysia very easily.
Do they "change" the race and religion info in purpose?

April 20, 2006 04:56 PM
The mistake could probably because of the sino-native race. The "si" is common to "Sikhism" to these clueless workers in NRD.
My religion is listed as BUDDHA instead of Buddhism in mykad.I wonder if the data entry of these cards are privatised?

We need to ask the MOH/DG whether the NRD is adopting any ISO. If yes what happened to it? There should be a trace back to who are all the staffs involved in the process chain pertaining to the problem MyKad and investigate what was the problem and how they ratify the problem? Otherwise someone is sleeping on the job.
Or probably no ISO. Maybe have but for show only!
There must be quality check along the chain.

so singapore was right after all...we have idiots working in the NRD keying wrong info on our IC...so that is why our IC is rejected as entry pass.
despite all the many instances highlighted in the press about wrong info on our IC..it is still happening..why?

April 20, 2006 05:43 PM
Well, not only because the word SINO is the cause of mistake, but even when race is stated as CINA, the religion is set as SIKHISM.
I'm only glad that they did not put it as ISLAM as many other non-Muslim has faced. And they need to go through a lot of trouble amending it like to clarify with Islamic department that they are not Muslim.
As for passports, wondering what kind of information is in there and whether they are correct too.
Maybe this is why Singapore is worried that they may be reading the wrong information. Perhaps even your name and IC number and address can be wrong!

Hey, don't you guys get it? The UMNO led government needs a lot more Sikhs so that statistically Hindus will show a lower figure and they can then tell Samy to F Off because MIC does not necessarily represent all Indians and Indians therefore are only a negligible number. So you MCA guys can play ball or not?

The whole idea of putting religion into identities card is STUPID in the fisrt. It whoever think of putting religion inside is a joker that NEVER USE THEIR BRAIN. What is the purpose? Anti-Terrorism?
Honestly, I don't blame the NRD stuff, because the idea is ultimate sutpidity. The more NON-ESSENTIAL,NON-IDENTICAL data entry, you will get more error. And slapping a RM10 administration, that is BOLEH!

Recently I went to the NRD office in PJ with my wife to verify the data in our MyCard chips and to my horror this appeared on the card reader as far as my card was concerned - Marital status: Bujang and Religion: Buddha. I immediately objected to the data shown on the screen and the first thing the kind lady officer asked me whether I was truly married. The only thing I could do was to point to my wife seated next to me as someone married to me. Then I told her as far as Religion is concerned, there were two errors. First, I am not "Buddha" but a Roman Catholic, and secondly, Buddha is not a religion but referred to the Enlightened One (the one and only one). It should read "Buddhist" instead. I further told the officer that there can only be one Buddha and I didn't know I was annointed as another Buddha by NRD. What blunder?!

Hey people, if you happen to pop ur MyKAd into a reader and find out that u're Muslim then don't get all pissed off and rush off to get it changed. Instead, calm down, go apply for a housing loan before interest rates go up again, then walk into a housing developer office and book yourself a new home and get it for 7% off the list price...why get worked up for no reason, instead, work the system...:)

Thanks to the internet and thanks to Screenshots, we have the opportunity to share info and shoot those who blunder.
Previously, we relied largely on the mainstream media – newspapers, magazines, TV. Sometimes, they spinned you until you went groggy and fuzzy. And, it was difficult to identify the truths and investigate the wrongs.
There was a time when the media glorified the “Know Who” for connecting the right people together in business and industry. Who connected the various parties in the MyKad business? Can they or can they not do the job?

I wanted to say that Sikhism is a religion, like Islam, Christianity or Buddhism, and it is not the preserve of any ethnic group. Yes, it was founded by a Punjabi man in 16th century India and the majority of its adherents are Punjabis but increasingly there are many conversions from white and black communities. And there have been Chinese converts to Sikhism. I read here that, according to a recent census done in the UK, there are a total of 79 Chinese Sikhs in that country.
Although everyone within Sikhism is meant to be equal, hence the use of the surname 'Singh' to remove all indicators of caste (within the context of traditional Indian society), many Sikhs have kept their jati (sub-caste) surnames and instead accord Singh a kind of middle name status, e.g. Gurbax Singh Malhi, member of the Canadian House of Commons. So yes, a Chinese man with the surname Wong could still ostensibly be a Sikh.
By the way, I am not saying the NRD did not mess up in this case - I have absolutely no doubt that they did, seeing as how it the rest of Mr Wong's name probably did not contain anything remotely Sikh. I am just saying that everyone should chill out when it comes to this whole 'Chinese cannot be Sikh' business.
JEFF OOI says: You are barking up the wrong tree so I have to set the record straight. Reader Wong, in this specific case, is NOT a Sikh by birth or rebirth. I have stated clearly in my blog that I was shown proof. So, go sermon elsewhere.

Same thing happened to my family members too. We all filled out the forms correctly, and we are very sure about it.
Don't they have a selection or drop down list to choose from (for religion) ? But again, they could have simply pick anything that they like. There's no accountability in them anyway.

I just think that NRD do not double check details on the form as well as on the computer before they write it into the MyKad. Therefore, in other words, no quality control/assurance to ensure data is correctly entered. I would like to find out their Client Charter and see what they say about accuracy of information.
I've suggested to Jeff before, perhaps he can do a poll out of 10 Malaysians MyKads, how many mistakes are there? I'm assuming at least 5 or 6 out of 10 MyKads have mistakes.

I think its not only the information in MYKAD. When I registered the birth of my son, my husband (at that time) did not have his MYKAD. While the NRD officer was filling up the information into the system for my son's registration, she checked our race. We were shocked as much as the NRD officer when it showed my husband's race was listed as SIAM. My husband is not 'keturunan' SIAM and this was not even MYKAD yet. At least she made the correction because we brought our birth certificates. If not, my son would be listed as Siamese as well.

I put a dash in the religion section when filling up my Mykad application form. And the NRD used their discretion to choose a religion for me. And so, according to the NRD, I'm a "Buddha" now. While I'm flattered they think I'm a Buddha, I'm quite sure I haven't attained enlightenment, at least not yet. But seriously, does the NRD have a policy of not allowing anyone to go 'religionless' in this country?
Posted by: chulas

April 21, 2006 01:15 PM
did NRD employ data entry clerks to key in our details? Anyway to track which errant clerk took the whole nation for a ride with his/her blatant mistakes? Was it done on purpose? Are these clerks qualified in the first place? I understand that the govt need to tackle unemployment rate in msia but by hiring monkeys wont do. we are putting the whole nation at a security risk by employing these ppl. imagine the error is not just confined to religion or ethnic but something rather more mischievous like a criminal offence etc. cant the NRD track down who was the one who processed these cards? You think they bothered to look into that?
Posted by: groo

April 21, 2006 02:33 PM
hey chulas, guess what, i checked mine too and like you, did not fill in the 'religion' space. They chose a religion for me. I am now a christian... hahaha... We have morons in JPN. Is it government policy that every person must have a religion?
