Goodbye, MGG Pillai
The veteran journalist who covered the Vietnam War, got expelled from Singapore as a foreign correspondent, and the man behind MGGPillai.com, passed on at 10:40hr today due to heart complications. He was 67.

We last met at the National Economic Congress earlier this month, where we spoke on different tracks. We chatted for an hour over lunch and I had the honour of serving him rice and his favourite dishes. In between laughters, he would tell me my hater numero uno, and I would tell him his admirers and detractors all over the place. That was our first meet-up after he recovered from a stroke last September. It has now become eternal memory for me.
MGG was instrumental in the launch of discussion group Sangkancil in 1995 - Malaysia's first online community. I will remember the guruji, my passionate greeting whenever I saw him, as Malaysia's pioneer in cyber activism for using the Internet to pursue his craft -- journalism and political commentaries.
My deepest condolences to his family members. May guruji rest in peace. The torch shall burn on.

It is sad to read on the demise of MGG Pillai. Although I do not know him in person, but I enjoy his writings and the guts he exhibited in expressing very frank opinions on what he knew and what he perceived. Faced with heavy and great odds, he soldiered on with fear or favour. How often can we come across such a journalist like Pillai? I salute him, a man of great guts who had contributed his part to try and bring about a fair society, particularly the Malaysian society which pride itself as harmonious and multi-racial? Can we really be one? The expose brought about by his writings will ring true and we need to have more journalists like him who minced no nice words and like a prirahnas would bite without letting go. May he rest in peace! Condolence to his family.

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man. -- George Bernard Shaw
For the establishment and their unethical cronies, a towering Malaysian like MGG Pillai was an unreasonable man but he is a giant and a legend, a true patriot. Politicians achieve by using other people's money - taxes etc. MGG Pillai achieved much by his indomitable spirit. Farewell and God bless.

I never knew this man personally but I was very fortunate to have corresponded with him several times over email.
Infact we agreed that when I returned to Malaysia in May, we agreed on meeting up for dinner.
Here was his last email to me:
"I will be in Kuala Lumpur. I am recovering from two minor strokes. I
am not fully recovered yet so I cannot agree to come where ever you
suggest. But I will go out with you provided you give me notice, The
dinner is okay in May."
May you rest in peace Mr. Pillai. God bless you.

My deepest condolences to his family in their hour of grief and sorrow.
Rest assures that death is another beginning. A death is just a night to his soul. He had lived before and will live again.
The integrity of the self and the soul exists beyond the possibility of annihilation, as you yourself will continue to exist regardless of which path you choose to take - dying after 30 years, or living physically on for many more.
In other words, you will continue to exist and to be fulfilled within that love you sensed.

One may not agree with his views, but one can't fault him for his fighting spirit and dogged consistency, and a passion for writing.
A fine gentleman with a biting humour
You also love him for his rumour
Hi MGG, you are moving on
I will always see your enciompassing smile
Though I have not embraced your Krushchev hug
Fare thee well
We salute thee
For a life well lived

He dares to write the unspoken facts of those untouchables without fear or favor.

i am very sad to hear of this news.
i had met mgg pillai once, many years back, when i was going to KL and planned for a gathering of a few sangkancil members, at uncle yap's (owner of beritamalaysia) usual watering hole. wow! to think he turned up to meet me! after the meeting, he gave me a lift in his left-side driver car to puduraya.
i knew it was him the minute he walked in as he commanded a magnificent figure. found him to be pretty friendly and talked as much as he write. i had enjoyed his writings all the while, whether in sangkancil or his own site.
my condolence to his family. i will missed his writings very much. he had been so out-spoken and articulate.

Too bad we can't leave comments on his website. I wonder if he has a "custodian" to maintain his website after he is gone.
That is one option of an "exit strategy" for those of us with websites...

But interestingly, those in the mainstream journalism field were deafeningly silent for his passing except for The Star.
Nope. Not even Bernama. Even Jonathan Kent (of Beebs) has a letter to Malaysiakini.
I am crossing my fingers to see if the mainstream media columnists/editors will have a tribute for him in their papers.
They are loads of other quality socio-politico blogs out there. *cough* *cough*

An unsung hero and true putra of this land, he belonged to a generation that is fading away. One that enshrines integrity, justice and progress. One that reflects the Malaysian spirit and conscience. Thank you for your contributions, Mr Pillai and may your efforts and sacrifice be continued by others who share your same concerns for this nation.
