Gag order on Bridge Debacle?
UPDATED VERSION. I need people out there to confirm whether Malaysia's mainstream media were given strict instructions on April 15 from the PM's Department NOT to feature anymore stories (positive or otherwise) on the Bridge, Causeway or CIQ with immediate effect?
Has this rule been put in effect and is it being diligently followed in the mainstream newsrooms and free-to-air TV stations?
Please update as I am experiencing timelag on information back home.
UPDATES: I am getting conflicting feedback from local FTA TV stations and newspapers. Some say gag, some say no gag. Some say self-gag.
Comments
Last night there was an interview on TV1 with the foreign minister, in english.

Jeff, admittedly , all the contents of your blog are sensational BUT without depth and thinking.
The feedback of your readers just condemning and bashing.
JEFF OOI says: Thank you for being part of us all this while.
You sounds weary and keep guarding your blog in order the topic is not hijacked
Talk is cheap , blogging with sensational issues is cheaper.
JEFF OOI says: The compliments is returned. Thank you. But aren't you the founder of www.tail-in-between-legs.com? Just because you lack the courage to provide your counter-thesis to BOS which you accused as "baseless and hyped" and which I challenged you to provide your academic rebuttal and you chickeend out, you now want to start as the founder of potshot.com to run down people with more diatribes? YOUR TALK IS THE CHEAPEST!

Interesting question, Jeff. Do you think there is one? I can only speculate:
1. Faction fight between Dr. M's men and ABB's.
2. ABB can't lie as fluently as Dr.M (feedback from the rakyat? UMNO JB branch, surely).
3. We have no funds.
4. Singapore owns us, or at least a fat chunk of our bluechips.
5. No one likes being reminded of the egg on his face.
6. The spin doctor is on MC.
These are not answering the question, but that has already been answered.

Gov. should invest more on widening and building up flyover at Perling area ( exit of toll). than it will be getting more smooth road for road user using 2nd Link.
But now we are in the issue of the gag order....... Sorry Jeff I just make a point fm South!

What human rights are we talking about in Malaysia. My Father of Kristus Aman Chapel, Fr Mitchel Anthony, was called to the police station for questioning (I am not sure whether he was locked up)in relation to a signature campaign urging all catholics to petition the Malaysian Govt to uphold the supremacy of the Federal Constitution: Protection For All. The campaign was initiated by Bar Council and many other NGOs including Sisters in Islam. Where is the Freedom of Expression, freedom of religion and freedom of press in Malaysia? Thks.

Response from KH/NST to Mahathir.
Extracts quoting Tengku Razaleigh:
"I read that Dr Mahathir said the media did not want to publish or broadcast
his views, yet during his time, I never had a chance to say anything to the
media. But I did not complain about it."
[...]
"I also heard that Dr Mahathir had accused Umno members of being mute
because they didn't dare criticise the Government.
"During his time, criticism was not tolerated at all," he said, adding that
the Government's decision to abort the plan to build the bridge was good for
the country.

The Scenic Bridge Saga:
On unfamiliar and shifting ground, Leaders disagree with Dr M's views
19 Apr 2006 By Wan Hamidi Hamid
KUALA LUMPUR:Several MPs found themselves in unfamiliar territory yesterday:
Having to disagree with a man they had either served or had grown up admiring.
Those who chose to go on record with their views on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's stinging attack on the Government for scrapping the bridge project did so in polite language.
One of them was Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, a former minister in Dr Mahathir's
Cabinet. He found it strange that someone who did not endear himself to the Opposition during his two decades as prime minister was now asking the
public to criticise the Government.
He was also surprised that Dr Mahathir had become a strong advocate of Press
freedom.
"I read that Dr Mahathir said the media did not want to publish or broadcast
his views, yet during his time, I never had a chance to say anything to the media. But I did not complain about it."
Tengku Razaleigh challenged Dr Mahathir unsuccessfully for the Umno presidency in 1987.
Following that, he formed Semangat 46 and contested two elections as a member of the Opposition before rejoining Umno in 1996.
"I also heard that Dr Mahathir had accused Umno members of being mute because they didn't dare criticise the Government.
"During his time, criticism was not tolerated at all," he said, adding that the Government's decision to abort the plan to build the bridge was good for the country.
On Monday, Dr Mahathir cautioned the current administration that "if you don't listen to other opinions, you will go wrong. If you only listen to your supporters, they will not say anything and you will get the wrong idea.
"Please remember what happened to Tunku for not listening to the people. The
most recent example would be Thaksin. They did not listen to the people and
they got into trouble. Suppress people's opinions and you may get away with
the idea that you are right, but you will find out one day that you are
wrong."
Malaysian Civil Liberties Society chairman Datuk Zaid Ibrahim noted that accepting diverse opinions was a sign of a tolerant and open Government. "It
's only fair for the Prime Minister to accept criticism from others. This
shows his openness towards views and ideas of the people," said the Kota Baru Member of Parliament.
Kemaman MP Ahmad Shabery Cheek recalled the unease people felt in the late 1980s when former Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman began to publicly criticise Dr Mahathir.
"I'm afraid the sentiment will prevail if Dr Mahathir continues to do the same to our Prime Minister. The Malays have a saying that it is not smart to spit when you're looking up at the sky."
Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim argued that Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi paid heed to public sentiment.
He noted that Abdullah had been going to the ground to get views and feedback from various segments of society. One clear example was that the Prime Minister listened to different groups before putting together the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
"I do see Pak Lah as a good listener. Dr Mahathir is also the same.
"Both are great listeners of the people. Otherwise, they could not be Prime Ministers," he said after launching Sinema Malaysia, a local entertainment magazine, at the Finas Studio yesterday.
the ideal situation. Even if we had only one per cent chance of a straight
"If the Government went ahead with the crooked bridge, it could later face
the consequences as Malaysia does not have a sovereign right to unilaterally replace its half of the Causeway with a new half-bridge.
"If we went ahead, and work on the bridge was stopped halfway, the country would have to bear the costs."
However, Hishammuddin said there would be no strain in the relationship between the two countries.
"We will continue to build ties with Singapore."
Asked to directly comment on Dr Mahathir's criticism, Hishammuddin echoed Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's views that the former premier "has the
right to comment".
"Pak Lah is a fair person. He allowed the Cabinet to make its decision after
considering the sentiment of the people. The Government is listening to the people," Hishammuddin said, again apparently referring to Dr Mahathir's
comments that the people wanted the bridge to be built.

MP Lim Kit Siang had asked some pertinent questions on the bridge issue and the govt should response sooner than later for good governance, accountability and transarency. These are serious issues where billions of taxpayers have been spent and a responsible govt will have to account for it. A White Paper in the parliament is one of the ways to explain to the rakyat the "flip-flip" decisions by the govt under the current PM Abdullah Badawi and the previous PM Mahathir.

White Paper on Mahathir’s “surrender sovereignty” allegation
Time & Date: April 18, 2006 @ 16: 45.31
Categories: Parliament Foreign General
The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi should table a White Paper in Parliament to lay out the full history, background, facts and reasons to answer the serious charges of former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad that the present Cabinet has “surrendered national sovereignty” in the decision to scrap the construction of the RM1.1 billion crooked half-bridge to replace Malaysia’s part of the Johore-Singapore causeway.
Mahathir has made very grave allegations casting aspersions not just on the judgment, but the very loyalty, patriotism and national commitment of the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers which cannot go unanswered – as when Mahathir said that he could not keep quiet “if somebody wants to sell Malaysia to other people”.
Foreign Minister, Syed Hamid Albar has declined to give all available information about the full history, background, facts and reasons about the RM1.1 billion crooked half bridge on the ground that “it is not proper for us to go into a debate with a former prime minister, a senior statesman, for whom we all have great respect”.
This is not a private argument between two persons or parties, but an important national issue involving the principles of accountability, transparency, integrity, good governance and, according to the former Prime Minister, national sovereignty.
There are many questions surrounding the genesis, costing, decision, award and negotiations between Malaysia and Singapore concerning the RM1.1 billion crooked half-bridge which Malaysians are entitled to answers, for instance:
•Why was Gerbang Perdana selected as the contractor for the RM1.1 billion crooked half-bridge and the RM1.2 billion customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex?
•Who was responsible for the terms of the contract which has imposed on the taxpayers the burden of compensating Gerbang Perdana some RM100 million for the cancellation of the crooked half-bridge project? What are the other other hidden costs to the taxpayers.
•Why did the Cabinet “”unanimously decide” to construct the crooked half-bridge under Mahathir’s premiership and ”unanimously decided” to scrap the project under Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s premiership?

Malaysia is a strange country. You have one retired PM criticising the current PM for doing something which he does not like. Tun M should keep his cool. Time has changed from the highhanded control when Tun M was the PM. Did he at anytime allow dissent? The problem with leadership is that once in the chair, the leader always thinks that what he does is correct. He brushes aside all opposition and now championing freedom of speech? If I were Tun M, I will choose to retire gracefully and let the pack he left behind to do their work and find their own way to manage the country. The problem is that when leadership is saddled in power far too long, it takes the view that it is always right! In the case of Tun M he behaves as if he must be doing the right thing in office and after leaving office, there is always the lingering feeling that he is still in office and in power too! I think he must have felt that he was consulted and his advice was not asked!
It is a legacy problem that Tun M is going through, trying very hard to protect the turf. What has happended to all the accolades that were bestowed on him upon leaving office and power? When this was being done, I for one who has read so much history to find the same thing happening, History repeating itself. Remember what Kruschev did to Stalin and remember what accolades were bestowed on Stalin. Read this same line and you will know that what were bestowed was only for show!

gag or no, let's admire some of the other scenic (cynic) bridges around the country, or more specifically, Klang Valley. There are some very pretty ones down the airport way. I wonder who built them? Any clues?

Scenic bridges? Plenty of them in Putrajaya, and to a lesser extent, Cyberjaya. Spanning scenic bodies of water which were purposes made.
Together with miles and miles of scenic lamp-posts, hectares of scenic govt offices [some of them more classy than the Agung's palace even!] and a long, long strect of scenic [but crumbling] boulevard.
Enough of scenic to last Malaysians for the generations which will be suffering the scenic future.
Read Kim Quek's excellant two-piece Malaysiakini article on the bridge issue.
Sample paragraph:
Let us be very honest from the outset. This very expensive project was never motivated for the benefit of the people. It is a typical Mahathir-era mega project - grandiose, high-cost and crony-driven for bumper profits without a tender being called and with no proper rationale.
Dr M said he does not care how he will be remembered by future generations when he is gone.
Perhaps they may wish they can forget.
