Crooked Bridge: Dr M blazes with 16-point hit-back

The Rashomon Effect deepens, and Dr Mahathir hits back:

“All in all it is clear that the Malaysian government is more interested in selling sand to Singapore than to build the bridge.

"This keenness to sell sand is strange for Malaysia does not need the proceeds from sale of sand.

"Despite my alleged profligate ways when I was PM, Malaysia is not so bankrupt that it has to depend on selling sand."

Time-stamped April 27, 2006 19:56hr, Bernama carries a 16-point rebuttal from Dr Mahathir Mohamad in response to the statement by Ambassador-at-large Fuzi Abdul Razak pertaining to the crooked bridge debacle.

Besides launching a broadside on Fuzi, Dr Mahathir also takes aim at ( 1 ) the Attorney-General, ( 2 ) a particular Malaysian leader, and ( 3 ) the Abdullah administration that "fails to do its best".

Quote Dr Mahathir:

...it was clear and recorded in writing that I proposed to build a bridge on the Malaysian side and the Singapore PM accepted it. Thus a unilateral decision became bilateral when Singapore acceded and accepted. Any change must similarly be agreed to by both sides.

For Singapore to add conditions more than two years later for the supply or 50 million cubic meters of sand for 20 years and to allow the Singapore Air Force to fly in Malaysian Air Space would constitute unilateral change. Malaysia can reject the new condition and insist on Singapore honouring the agreement between the two Prime Ministers.

(But) It is the Malaysian Government, which tacitly agreed to the Singapore unilateral condition when it decided that it would not build the bridge because it is not in a position to supply sand or open its airspace because of opposition by Malaysians.

Summary:

  1. On Fuzi Abdul Razak:

"What a rambling explanation... (it) serves only to convince that the government's priority and intention is to sell sand to Singapore. If it is not allowed to do so then Malaysia will not get its bridge.

"In case Fuzi had not read the Wayleave Agreement... as a seasoned diplomat (Fuzi) must know that treaties or agreements solemnly entered into by two countries, as are agreements between two parties can only be modified, changed or added to if both sides agree. If there is a dispute regarding the provision or interpretation of the agreement, then there should be arbitration or reference to courts. This is a part of International Law.

  2. On the Attorney-General:

"Actually there is no need to doubt Malaysian rights in its own territorial waters. But the Government of Malaysia did not do its best to reject the condition. It gave in supposedly because the Malaysian legal authorities believe Singapore is in the right.

It would be interesting to read the grounds for the A.G. to conclude that Singapore has what amounts to extra territorial rights and Malaysia has no sovereign right within its own territorial waters."

  3. On a particular Malaysian leader:

"That any Malaysian leader should not shudder in horror at the idea of scraping ONE BILLION SQ. METERS from Malaysian sea-beds continuously over a period of 20 years, thereby destroying all the fish breeding grounds of Malaysian seas, depriving Malaysian fishermen of their livelihood, destroying Malaysia’s marine ecology defies the imagination.

"That there should be any Malaysian leader willing to entertain this idea, to destroy Malaysian seas to satisfy Singapore speaks badly of his love for his country."

  4. On the Abdullah administration that 'fails to do its best':

"All in all it is clear that the Malaysian Government is more interested in selling sand to Singapore than to build the bridge.

"This keenness to sell sand is strange for Malaysia does not need the proceeds from sale of sand. Despite my alleged profligate ways when I was PM Malaysia is not so bankrupt that it has to depend on selling sand."

In the final analysis, Dr Mahathir says he is not convinced at all with the reasoning given by the Abdullah administration why the bridge could not be built.

Dr Mahathir's statement is carried verbatim in Bernama and kmu.net.my.

Let's see if the newspaper that believes it is practising "a deliberate policy of openness" will be enabled to carry the Mahathir statement in toto.

Or if the Rashomon Effect permeates.

Surely if Dr M can overrode Daim even in the presence of a signed memoranda on the basis that the Malaysian parliament had not endorsed or ratified the "agreement", I cannot understand how the other party cannot shift position in the absence of any signed document.

Initially I belive Fuzi's explanation that we cannot connect the bridge to the Spore side of the causeway. Then clearly Dr M had more insight and wisdom. The solution is to connect it to our side first NEAR the Singapore's side. Then only demolish the rest of our side. So smart of him!

Dr. Mahathir is a man who has seen a lot such as the WW2 and pre-independence days of Malaysia. Not many leaders here today experienced these two events in person. I personally believe these historical events would somehow influence the way someone think and act.

How these events influenced Dr. Mahathir can clearly be seen through his letters and speeches. Every time he talks, it oozes with patriotism that many of us wouldn’t comprehend; that’s what makes him thick. Our leaders need to have that mentality, which can craft national spirit from layman like us.

We need someone in-the-know to run our country. We need politician who can answer to the people with confidence and without fear. We need leaders who can stand on their own two feet and make important decisions for the sake of our national interest.

Dr. Mahathir once said, “Yang baik kita ambil, yang rosak kita buang”, whereby he was referring to the influence of western culture in our country. Hence, there are things that I do not agree with Dr. Mahathir but with regard to the bridge issue, I like the patriotism instil in him. I have to say that Dr. Mahathir is one of the smarter ones among our leaders, a rare breed in fact. He knows his work; he knows what he is talking about and he is not afraid to take things into his own hand.

Oh btw, his favourite song is My Way by good old Frankie.

I dont see whats the big deal ..it's none of Tun's business WHY AB's Government does not want to proceed. His "wild claims" that Malaysia is keen to seel sand to SG more then building the bridge is uncaleld for, and attention seeking.

Malaysia has a choice to sell or not too, and Singapore has a choice to move goal posts, much like Matahir did with the water talks!

Its up to the Malaysian government to decide not to proceed and he's just being so attention seeking to rebut on anything that touches on his legacies!

He's very childish & immature and doesnts eem to understand "retire gracefully"

On the other hand, i'm not impressed in the way this bridge issue was handled either, simply because everyone working on this from ourside ...look like a bunch of idiots who do not have sufficient indepth skils & knowledge in handling such issues!

What else you get when meritrocracy is not the way of life in Malaysia ...and none other the Tun himself who is the root cause for this!

Now Dr M is fighting for his truth, the conflict is when other people are also speaking of their truth. Do we want their truth to be our truth or vice versa?

JEFF OOI says: The Rashomon Effect?

Admit for once, “your way” of doing things at inflated cost to benefit those scabs of society who gained their fortunes by political pull, by having government grant them favors and franchises at the expense of their fellow-men is very wrong and should be done away with.

Forget that old song and listen to the comforting and soothing words of Simon & Garfunkel on “Bridge Over Troubled Water”

The lyrics begin with………

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I’m on your side, when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water……….

The mystery deepens and the game's afoot.

"Its elementary, my dear Watson"

At the end of the day isn't it all about how we intercourse with our neighbours? Obviously for intercourse to happen it should be a balanced two way thing, each taking responsibility for their own satisfaction and that of the other. One setting the lead and the other to follow at one time and vice versa another time knowing only too well that ultimate satisfaction will be had by both and both shall have "the balance of benefits"!

It would seem like Singapore when having to go to bed only does so reluctantly because its partner for the night is perceived to be foul smelling and deceiving. They are superior beings after all. Can't really be trusted.

Malaysia on the otherhand goes to bed feeling subordinated and feeling small. Dresses up and puts on some perfume even, but really cannot change the fact that once intercourse begins, it becomes stiff not knowing what to do.

All this conflict that we see now stems from whats happened in bed. We don't really see nor are we told what happened. The fact that the Malaysians were impotent is never revealed.

Maybe the Singaporeans are kind when they say its the sheets that were dirty and they want new sheets or that the bed was making too much noise and very shaky and squeeky. WE've heard all the Malaysian excuse.

With the kind of mentality we have in Parliament, considering that in there they behave like as if they are capable of rape, yet in this case they behave like impotent wannabe rapists who will never rise to the occassion when seized with the opportunity, there can never be resolution. All that they will do is what the Maoris have reduced their haka to today. But even then if the UMNOites do adopt the haka they will only perform that for the benefit of their own Malaysian non-Malay audience!

Mahathir has retired no doubt, but as a citizen, that too an inteligent one, he has every right to point out mistakes when the Government is at fault.
For one, he did not appoint himself a 'Senior Minister' like the emperor across the causeway.
As for nepotism & cronyism - as least he was open about it.
It is evident that there are many keen to 'expose' his so called negative attributes but at the same time we have to be grateful for the many milestones we gained under his leadership.
No other Malaysian leader has had the guts to stand up to the foreign white supremists dogs & put them in their place as Mahathir did.
Incidentally, he also stopped Malaysia from achieving 'brokeback' or 'dan bui' fame by eliminating the former DPM. I'm sure we don't want an advt. like - 'Malaysia - Truly Gay'!.
Hence give the man credit for his leadership as he may yet again show the world Malaysians have a mind of their own!

Although I do not want the bridge, I do admire Dr Mahathir for his intelligence. I liked the way he fought for Malaysia, the way he stand up to foreign powers, the keen and consistency in his struggles to realise what he thinks best for Malaysia. Agree with hedonism up there, he is one of a kind, a rare kind indeed that stands out from the rests. With his leadership, I felt protected and safe. He is a role model for our malay friends. My credit to you, Dr Mahathir.

hedonism, perhaps stop talking "patriotism" will do good to ALL human kind.

And let me show you some of the famous "PATRIOT" : Hitler, Mao, Stalin. And recently : Marcos, Suharto, Saddam hussein, Ratko Mladic,Mugabe.

Oh btw, don't forget that a country that still using crooked law like ISA,OSA to shut people off, it is nothing new about "one sided story".

Stay tuned.

Tun Mahathir always makes more sense than AAB's gov. I think he is right this time.

I am also quite disappointed in AAB's gov. They seem so incompetent. I hope that it isn't true but the recent happenings speak for itself.

If only half the folks in this country could be half as patriotic as Mahathir, our country would be a much better place indeed!

moo_t - why stop there with your list? how about all the nameless soldiers who fought and died for their country? How about the likes for Gen. McArthur, Gandhi, JFK, Tunku just to name a few? You'll note, this list is far longer than the one you highlighted. It's totally unfair and unjust to just hightlight these known dictators and clubber it under the patrotic banner.

Understand what it is to be Patriotic before generalizing it!

It really looks like a war movie now.

First line of defence, Syed Albar... shot down.

Second defence, Tan Sri Fuzi... terminated.

Now, who's head is next? Before TDM finally reaches his target.

moo_t,

Everything in life has the good side and the bad side i.e. yin & yang.

For an example, our undivided love for God can have the good and bad effect. Sorry to say that some people might misinterpret God's teaching and act unruly in the name of God.

So obviously I’m talking about the good side of patriotism just like what Nav mentioned.

JacnJill

You asked.....Now, who's head is next? Before TDM finally reaches his target.

Who else? TDM was hoping that AAB would continue his 21 years legacy.

Instead AAB dismantled everything TDM stood for, fought for, cried for, whipped for, sacked for, and prayed for, almost immediately he became PM. TDM was so dismayed beyond words especially after the Proton drama.

As we all know, TDM and Singapore's LKY share one common and mutually admired trait: They are your best of friends and your worst enemy. If you stand in their and you are within sight, consider yourself dead.

Just ask Anwar, Musa, Razaleigh, Daim or ask those Opposition party members in Singapore... they got humiliated till they lost both their marbles and got sued right up to their underpants.

Folks, shed a tear for AAB, the poor man doesnt know what hit him and why he got hit big time and will be hit tsunami-like in the coming months.

AAB might learn that in politics, it does not may to be decent.

It's up to individual to benchmark the way that present head running the country versus his predecessor.
Both has own traits and the definition of "A Great Leader" in my own dictionary is a leader who put all his people's benefits supersedes his personal benefits.
Alike investment on a PLC's shares, the same theory applies. If the selfish CEO or director of the PLC committed something wrong for his own benefits, share price would be affected and all shareholders would be affected.
No doubt Dr M does contribute to our country's developement, but please do not try to OVER CREDIT him.Pls do not be superstitious that no one can do better than he did.
I certainly feel that we do not need an "Over Smart" leader rather than a leader that has courage, intelligence, wisdom, prudent, sincere, humble, down to earth and etc.

The bridge issue has been mishandled, but who is Dr M to comment? Someone said "retire gracefully" and I agree. He's had far too many years at the top, and now he is sticking his nose in where frankly, it does more damage than harm. Let AAB's government handle this issue, which it has already been done. Right now, this bickering between Dr M and LKY/Singapore/AAB/Proton/everyone else has gone on far too long. Mahathir was a nationalist, not a patriot. Don't confuse the two. Patriotism doesn't mean "standing up to the white supremists (sic) dogs" as bnaipal above said. It means doing what is best for your country under the circumstances. Cronyism, corruption, multi billion projects are MAHATHIR'S legacy. Let's see how AAB does. After saying all that, AAB doesn't seem to be the kind of person to inspire confidence in a nation.

We'll see what happens.

I have never once felt secured after AAB took over the government. He's highly incompetent in leadership, in knowledge (besides religious knowledge - for the sole degree he attained), in anything really.

It's obvious he's trying to establish his mark as 'Mr Clean'. All our past 4 PMs has a 'bapa' recognition, i.e. Bapa kemmerdekaan, bapa pembangunan, bapa pemodenan. All the bapas are already taken, what's left? BAPA SUCI ! He wants to go into the record books as bapa suci. But look at what he's done to the pace of the country's growth under Dr M? Yes no doubt he is trying to clean up politics. Bravo! But dont u think he's diverting too much attention to it to make it his mark? Dont u think there's something new that falls off his mouth everyday now? 9th malaysian plan! Slogan and excuses!

If only Dr M can come back to topple AAB in another UMNO general assembly and assume the PM post. If only Dr M can be the 6th PM of malaysia. But he's growing old. Long life Dr M.

Not that I like you, but i respect you for who you are. We're humans and no one is perfect. But Dr M's mistakes would have been outdone by the progress he brought to our country. What about AAB? There's not much done so far, so why will there be mistakes?
Ah ha...you're wrong. How many blunders he's made? With proton, now the bridge, many more. One day he's going to sell our Petronas Twin towers to foreigners, sell our KLIA. And you know what? Again, Malaysians are STUPID!!! Obviously if he sells it to foreign company, they'll be efficient enough to run these service for us in lower cost. Stupid Malaysians will rather lower cost for daily living than soverignty of the country. STUPID malaysians! How ashamed i feel to be a Malaysian under AAB's leadership. I cant wait for the next PM whoever it is to take over. Dispose off our current PM!!!

Mahathir has certainly gone berserk and is now running amok lamenting and harassingly pointing accusing fingers in all directions except at himself. It is very much the scientist that has transformed into a menacing goblin in the superman movie that is out to maim and destroy anyone in its path.

His grouses are obvious. His appointed successor Pak Lah has certainly failed to live up to his predecessor's expactation and idiosyncrasy. Pak Lah is expected to be a touch bearer of the Mahathir tradition. Spending large amount of money on mega projects that is hardly relevant to the immediate needs of the people and the nation .certainly in the short term it would spur up some economic activities and enrich his cronies through the well established practice of political patronageship of business tycoons.

Contrary to these expectations, Pak Lah has been dismantling and frustrating many of these dream projects that Mahathir himself did not have the time to implement during his term. The "scenic” bridge happens to be just one of such mega projects.

Mahathir's ultimate objective appears to me that he would like history to honour him with such title as "the great" as in the case of Alexander the great or Akbar the Great or "the age of Mahathir".The ego of the man is certainly too great for an ex-leader of a small nation like Malaysia.

We could therefore appreciate his wreath of disappointment and disillusionment against Pak Lah and his cadre of followers. They have failed, for good reasons, in protecting the legacies of the Mahathir era ;let alone completing his unfinished grandiose projects. Now we can appreciate why Mahathir cried when he recites his poetry on the task that are yet to be completed,"Tugas yang belum selesai ".

The Great Masses of people (public) is more likely to be convinced by a BIG LIE than a small one - by ADOLF HITLER.

Behold. Before you turned into frenzied zombie under the spell by a ruthless dictator/manipulator.

To be continued......

I could not agree more with the points raised by Suria Kenchana that AAB has to do what he has to. Tun Mahathir though widely viewed by many as the more credible leader and the personality responsible for accelerating the growth of the nation, he is not without his flaws.

Tun M's obsession with Mega projects have actually put a toll on our current situation. Behind the impressive twin towers, KLIA and other mega projects, lies the truth of the Malaysian society that is crumblimg apart.

Today, Malaysian society is more divisive under his rule than any of past PMs. He failed to unite the various races he thought he had. In Tunku's time, we saw a fair mix of races in the civil service and school. But during Tun M's rule, the reverse has happened. Today, the typical sekolah kebangsaan has hardly any Chinese students. More Bumiputras may have become millionaires but the gap between the rich and poor especially among the community has widened considerably. Corruption in the civil serivce and police force has gone out of proportion as the cost of living especially ik KL has risen considerably.

To Ironicboy, for your information, it is because of corruption under Tun M's rule that the country is paying the ultimate price. Many GLCs except for the notable ones like Telekom and Petronas, are all lost making. State owned funds by state govts have all gone to waste. Most were invested in lost making companies. Corruption by Tun M's cronies were all gotten away.

AAB did the right thing of scrapping the double railway project and also, the scenic bridge.

JEFF OOI says: I must correct your spin. It was Abdullah who revived the half-bridge project on Jan 18, 2006 and only to abort it weeks later on April 12, 2006, thereby creating more compensation claims for Gerbang Perdana. Don't omit this fact. Are you also cast under Rashomon Effect?

He is having a hard time with his predecessor but I guess Malaysia do need a leader like AAB to clean up the mess for the time being.

The question is can ABB clean up the mess if the mess is really there? The Scenic Bridge may not be necessary for the time being but the double rail track project is a must and is not a waste if you can look into the future. I believe our exPM has better forsight than any other PM in terms of the economic growth for the country. If not for the TM, today we may not have this blog nor controlled statelite TV because most Politicians believe Malaysian are still not intellectualy matured! Look around our Asean neighbours and you can see the difference. We are now behind...in many aspect! ABB should continue with what TM left behind and not cut this and cut that! 9th Malaysian Plan is a plan to spend and how effective it can transformed Malaysia is another scene to be seen in 5 years time. It is easy to spend and we dont have to celebrate now! Malaysia needs strong and abled leadership to lead with action and not to preach.

The initial respond from TM after the bridge is scrapped is quite lame and somewhat neutral. Neutral statement don't really get supporter into frenzy stance.

But after a few days, statements after statements, most importantly, the old hand inject in a dose of "sovereignity", a dose of "patriotism", a dose of "blame thy neighbour", things starts to get murky for some.

Those in support of ditching billions dollars useless half-bridge now are convinced that the half-bridge is useful after all.

Ever wonder why some party and some jurassic leaders wins times after times, even it is grossly inefficient and corrupt?

THATS because they know how to play their cards right. And of coz not least contributed by those zombie "patriot" who are under spelled once those words are used.

Look. Here is someone who has been playing those cards right for the last 22 years. Master of masters, and they use it to get what they want.

(FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSE ONLY):
Step 1 Bailout of son's company etc, step 2, then use those word during election....then zappp....step 3, back into office.

If you are still the "unthinking" zombie under spell, go seek a "reasoning" bomoh.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
