Al-Fatihah

Former Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghafar Baba returned to Rahmatullah at 07:34hr today. He was 81.

I remember him as a man of cool rationale, who never had to resort to one-upsmanship and racial extremism to further his political agenda all his life.

To everyone in the Allahyarham's family, please accept my deepest condolences, borrowing from a verse from the obituary issued by Pemuda PAS:

Kembalinya Allahyarham ke Rahmatullah merupakan satu kehilangan besar kepada negara. Kami mendoakan agar seluruh ahli keluarga Tun tabah dan sabar menghadapi ujian yang melanda. Kami juga mendoakan agar roh Allahyarham ditempatkan bersama-sama roh orang-orang yang soleh jua.

Ghafar's body would be buried at the Makam Pahlawan (National Mausoleum) after asar prayers (4.29pm) and will be accorded full national honour.

I was out of Internet for a couple of days as I was on the road. I really appreciate the many readers who SMS-ed to inform me of his demise.

Do accept my deepest condolences to Allahyarham's families.
Really a big loss.
Al- Fatihah

My condolences to the late's family.
Peace to you and the rest of the family.

With sympathy

Folks

Allahyarham Tun Ghafar Baba belongs to the pioneer generation of Malaysian leaders whose sense of patriotism, and ability to sit with community leaders of other races to fix our nation's problem as comfortably as with his fellow Malays. An attribute that we don't see any more these days in most of the young UMNO leadership upstarts.

A true gentleman under difficult times. He may have his faults and weaknessesn as the older generation may know, but he stood tall above them all.

One who, despite all the political ups and downs he faced in his political career, held steadfast to the humble and proud spirit of the "Adat Melayu".

Although being bypassed several time to lead the country as a PM, he held his own and kept his own integrity intact.

Present crop of most of the UMNO and UMNO Youth leaders don't come close to the greatness of this man.

History will judge him well.

Condolences to his family.

May his soul rests in peace.

He fought a good fight and he rendered himself well. A life to celebrate as it was a life that gave and gave to serve the betterment of the community.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences. As we reflect upon his passing I would like us and especially our politicians to reflect on somthing that you wrote Jeff, " remember him as a man of cool rationale, who never had to resort to one-upsmanship and racial extremism to further his political agenda all his life" How many of us have to depend on something like this or its equivalent to pit ourselves against our perceived enemies. Ghafar didn't seem the need to! What a man!

My condolence and to his creditors and the income taxes that he need not pay.

Frank&Honest , deserving obit to the TUN . And to dtsv ... not now ! my condolonces to the nation .

The staff of IMATEX (India Malaysia Textiles) will also remember the sacrifice that Ghafar Baba & his beloved patriotic son Tamrin made towards IMATEX.
The highly priced land at Mak Mandin generated more highly appreciated returns for Tamrin & Butterworth Council members.
May his soul meet at least a few of the souls of the poor former workers of IMATEX.
AMEN!

I think it was quite insensitive of you in your comments when there is grief not ony for Allahyarham's family but also to the nation.

thruth always does not pay. To be famous, u have to be like the 'lalang' - sway with the wind! U will get into the limelight that way & u can Think Aloud along with being 'Allowed' to Think.
But all said, a fellow human being has died, and we all have to bow our heads in prayer for him. May God be his guiding light to a World of Heavenly Bliss.
AMEN!

My sincere condolences to the family of Tun Ghafar Baba and may his soul rest in peace. He was a simple man and his style of politics is indeed commendable.Politicians whether from the Barisan National or oppositions really respect him of his leadership and his coolness has made him a great leader in the history of UMNO.

bnaipal

you DO have a cantankerous view about someone who had just passed away. I read what you wrote about the late Tun Ghafar Baba in your blog. You, being a new kid on blogosphere, learn that there is always a proper time and place to judge a person, especially someone who barely was buried and who. despite what you said, was our national leader since the early days of independence.

F&H, Why so condescending? bnaipal can blog as he pleases. If you lack respect for someone, does that immediately change if that someone dies? And what has the fact that the deceased "...was our national leader since the early days of independence" got to do with the price of fish? If what bnaipal said was factually incorrect, then rebut it. Why try to silence him/her? What makes you think you are qualified to lecture him/her (even if you are not a " new kid on blogosphere"? Sheeesh!!!!!!

It is sad to hear the passing away of another politician of vintage age. The Late Pak Ghafar was from the independence days together with Bapa Malaysia, the beloved Tunku Abdul Rahman. My association with him was in the crisis of the MCA in the early decade of the 1980s. Although I did not share the many decisions and logic of some of the ways issues were settled. Nevertheless, I still regard him as a simple and down to earth politician and statesman.

My personal condolences to his family and may his soul rest in peace. He had a good fight!

hero?...rite...

kimmy

You got it all wrong with your emotions. I said there is a right place and time for everything. There is such a thing as a civility.

When Ariel Sharon went into a stroke, there was jubilant celebration by the Palestinians at first . But when they realised that he is on his deathbed, even hardened Palestinians on the street who hated him so much, held their views and comments in their hearts. When CNN went into the streets in Gaza to ask the man in the street what they thought: Most held their views in their hearts; one just said: "God gives and God takes". The man is still in the coma, and even hardened Palestinians withhold their nasty comments.

I am not denying the right of bnaipal to say what he says. As much I can comment what HE says.. sheesh !!!

Surely, people like you, educated and sophisticated, can learn a thing or two from the ordinary, not as well educated as you or bnaipal. Grow up, kimmy!!!

There you go again F&H, trying to impose your sense of "civility" and dare I say, an unstated "morality" on others!

Perhaps I am blind or my England no veli good, but I do not see anyone here jumping in jubilation at Tun's demise. Your anecdote on the Palestinians and Sharon is therefore an Augustine Paul (ie, irrelevant) and misplaced.

You seem to believe that people who do not agree with your opinions are juveniles or immature. Well, maybe I'll just go to my corner and sulk then!

Finally, I must admit I am wrong! With a comment like "...people like you, educated and sophisticated, can learn a thing or two from the ordinary, not as well educated as you or bnaipal", you are not just condescending, you are presumptious as well.

JEFF OOI says: One cold fact. Ghafar Baba is no longer here to reply to both your savoury and unsavoury commentaries, if any. He has returned to Rahmatullah. So, why don't you guys save the trouble and, instead, a little prayer for the demise? You'ss gett o share the gracious merits of your own prayers.

Al-Fatihah..
