Eyecare scare: What is MoH doing about this?
UPDATED VERSION: 11:10hr March 13
This morning, Screenshots has been contacted by readers who experienced eye infection after using a certain brand of eyecare products. Please alert me if you faced similar experience.Immediately, you should consult your eye doctor for a thorough examination, keep the mediacl bills and receipts for your medical expenses. Next, go to the eyecare outlet from which you bought your eyecare product that caused you trouble, and ask the shop to contact its principal supplier, and demand an official explanation.
Thirdly, I need your bottle of the multi-purpose solution, or the packaging of eyecare product which shows the batch numbers, to help me in the lab analysis and related investigation.
I have also alerted Bausch & Lomb Malaysia on this blog topic and asked for a statement. They have yet to reply.
I am very disturbed by this piece of news, which is over two weeks old in the media, and over three months old under clinical investigation in Singapore.

SOURCE: The Star, Feb 23, 2006 (Page W45)

SOURCE: Feb 25, 2006 (Page N22)
On Feb 20, the Singapore Health Ministry (MoH) issued an advisory to contact lens users in the country to stop using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu multi-purpose contact lens solutions after cases of fungal eye infections were reported in alarming numbers.
According to Channel News Asia (Feb 20), the Singapore MoH conducted an investogation together with Health Sciences Authority and the Singapore National Eyes Centre (SNEC), and it was revealed that 18 of the 19 patients reported by the SMEC has used the Bausch & Lomb's product, ReNu.
Similar case of fungal eye infection involving ReNu were reported in Hong Kong and Brunei. Subsequently, a certain batch of the product was recalled from the three markets.
The news had also jolted Beijing and Shanghai to be on the look-out. Even the Optician Journal in UK has sounded an alert on feb 22.
Bernama (Feb 21 and Feb 24) and the Hong Kong government (Feb 22) had related stories on this.
No report, no action
A report in Borneo Bulletin (Feb 21) quoted an eyecare outlet manager in Bandar Seri Begawan as saying products sold in Brunei mostly came from Malaysia.
However, in The Star report dated Feb 25, Bauch & Lomb South-East Asia managing director Foo Eng Chuan was quoted as saying that his company would not suspend the sales of ReNu multi-purpose solution in Malaysia. Reason: "There had been no report of corneal infection in Malaysia so far." Quote and unquote Bausch & Lomb's MD in The Star.
He also revealed, in The Star report, that Bausch and Lomb had voluntarily suspended sales of the product in Hong Kong and Singapore "to help the health ministries investigate the cause of the infection".
Taking chances?
The question we beg to ask is this: What has our Health Ministry under Dr Chua Soi Lek been doing in undertaking similar precaution.
It is certainly least comforting to note the posssibility that Malaysia shares the consignment of ReNu distributed in Singapore, whichhas been under clinical investigations by Singapore Moh and SNEC since December 2005.
Has Dr Chua's team been proactively exchanging market intelligence and clinical reports with its counterparts in Singapore, Brunei and Hong Kong? Earlier, health authorities in Singapore said point-blank that it would not want to take any chances.
Today, March 13, Daily Times in Pakistan quoted a Reuters story as saying that Bausch & Lomb, which suspended sales of its ReNu contact lens solution in Singapore and Hong Kong last month, announced on Friday March 10 that the company has decided on a compensation plan for customers in Singapore.
Google News has about 52 entries on this Bausch & Lomb product scare across the region, don't tell me Dr Chua and his officers are fast asleep.
Watch this space.
Comments
i was at my optometrist two weeks ago. a customer came in and asked for ReNu but was told that the shop has stopped selling ReNu because of some health concerns. at that time i thought it was according to advisory from the MoH. if not, i'm glad my optometrist for the past ten years has proven his professionalism and care for his customers.
don't rely on our gov to do eveything for you. esp since you already know how inefficient and opaque it functions. if you walked into a optometrist and find ReNu on the shelf, perhaps you should turn around and walk straight back out? if it is your usual optometrist you just walked into, perhaps you should look for another one?

I have swapped to other brand upon reading the news 3 weeks ago. In Malaysia, you just can not depend MOH to safeguard us.
First , the hand and foot disease in Sawarak has been reaching to an alarming level but it seems not much has been done. More than 600 cases has been reported and the daily rate is 200 cases
Second, when Pak Lah declared emergency on haze condition last year , police and FRU were sent, I don't think the minister understand the context of emergency in such a case.
In short the government machinery just do NOT have the process, procedure and work instruction in place for daily work , not to mention crisis management.
Just do a testing, Jeff , could you ask NISER to send you a copy of their standard Incident management procedure for virus and malware immediately ?

Rely on MoH? It is a disaster. I'm not going to give any "constructive critism" sicne it will not help anyway.
When "suppose to be" policy maker go micro-management, how do you expect the department function properly? For example, Dr Chua previous give a warning about boric acid level inside the food, which are suppose to be done by his staff.

eh I remember reading this news in a local newspaper... forgot which one though...
gave me quite a scare as I use this brand... not often and I never experienced any extra effects..
but seems that the heat on this in the local media fizzled out after that one piece.

the StarBites says that there are no cases of corneal infection in Malaysia and thus we can continue using the solution. PURE STUPIDITY. Do we need to wait until someone is blind before we start taking actioin, just like we always do?

I need advise guys....
I have 3 bottles (2 unopen , 1 using) of Renu Multipurpose Solution with MoistureLoc...
It cost me about RM60.. and I dont think I would discard them just like that... What should I do with it? I cant take it to the shop and ask for refund, or can I? And I bought it in one of the Shops in Sg Wang which I cant remember exactly...
So, what is the best/alternative brand that you recommend? Im staying in PJ and would appreciate to get it somewhere near...and hopefully not too expensive. Posibly Multipurpose solution because I never like using saline...
JEFF OOI says: A reader who was infected went for a check-up at a medical center in Ampang today. It cost his RM185. He went back to the eyecare outlet -- England Optical in Ampang Point -- and got a free replacement of one bottlle of multipurpose solution. I will post the advisory given by Singapore Press tomorrow.
And Jeff you suggesting me to go for eye check? How much it will cost average? Im tight on budget for unnecessary expenses especially after the cost of fuel rised up...

i too use the same brand like izudeen.
when i first read about this news in singapore in feb., i was using renu B&L, going to finish, and had one fresh (unused) bottle in my shelf. after reading about the news,i went to have a look at the unused renu bottle from top to bottom and was a bit apprehensive when i notice the 'import by' mentioning singapore. however, i was not paranoid... did i throw away this new fresh bottle after reading about the scare? nah, i didn't. i opened it and used it... and so far, good, nothing happens (been using it for about 20 days).
izudeen, there are lots of other cheaper and just as good brand of multi purpose solution around e.g 'complete', 'opti-care' (which was the solution that come together as a starter pack for new contact lens wearer). watson, the retail shop, also came up with its own brand name multi purpose solution.

I've been using ReNu ever since I can remember, and I did in fact contract an eye infection late last year. I had to go to the doctors & was prescribed with chloramphenicol(an eye ointment) and an eye drop medication.
Back then, this was not in the news yet so I assumed that I had somehow managed to contaminate my lenses. When I found out about this, I threw away my half full bottle ASAP & switched to another brand of solution. Fortunately, I don't buy my solutions in bulk. IMHO, there IS something wrong with the current batch of ReNu because some of my other friends(who are ReNu users) have experienced problems as well.

my local optometrist actually stop selling it & give full replacement to any of their customer that walk in and ask for replacement.
According to them, B&L actually did not release any recall in Malaysia but it was recall in SG. so .. really smelly.

I was a contact lense user several years ago until an irritation in my eye that I have to discard it altgether. Whenever I put on in, my eyes will turn red and I will feel very uncomfortable. I suspected it was also due to the solution I used then which was Renu.
It did help somewhat when I changed my contact lens solution. Such news of Renu solution posing a health hazard are not new. I have heard of it several years ago through the grapevine. No official statements or reports to confirm it then. Hence, this news came as no surprise to me.
But in Malaysia, for any action to be taken, I guess it must take a VIP or a renown personality to be blinded by the solution then we will see some results.
Take for example the case of Dr Liew's tragic death several months ago. Being in killed in construction sites is nothing new. There are far too many reports of Indonesian workers being killed by falling objects etc, however, no action was taken till late.
Anyway, Malaysia Boleh!
