Perdana replacement model?

In the March 15 edition of the famed GoAuto e-news by John Mellor, it was reported that Mitsubishi is to supply the Australian-made Mitsubishi 380 as the replacement model for the aging Proton Perdana.

GoAuto e-news also highlighted that since its launch in Australia October last year, sales of Mitsubishi 380 had been anything but impressive. The year one sales forecast had been adjusted downward from 32,000 units to 27,000 units. Sales for February this year only clinched 1,011 units.

Chips of Motor Trader & Autocar Asean was among the first to 'smell' of the new Perdana being based on the Mitsubishi 380 over a month ago! In fact, on the day Proton signed the collaboration agreement with Mitsubishi, the popular auto forum has had the picture in its report. Click here!

Looks like better this than nothing. It cost no money to develope, just pay royalty for design and development. But if proton charges more than RM90k for this car, they are taking Malaysians for a ride.

"The Mitsubishi 380 is based on the North American Mitsubishi Galant and is powered by a 3.8 liter SOHC V6 engine/235 bhp@5250rpm and 343Nm torque@4000rpm."

Fuel Tank Capacity 67 liters!!! that is RM128.64 for a full tank.

We need hybrid cars mate not big bulky petrol guzzling junk...

I propose that our Government to waived all taxes on Honda, Toyota, etc. hybrid cars to be sold in Malaysia. Even better, interest free loan for all hybrid cars

That sounds just about right for Malaysia, the left-overs and the dead-beats!

Maybe Proton is going down because their new logo not bringing luck? should go back to the moon and star..

it's times like these i really wonder what in the world we need proton for. if someone thinks this car might work in malaysia, why not just cut to the chase and import the darned car!

what is the point of bringing it in, re-badging it, then displaying it to the world as if it's our own?

the only "improvement" proton can make is perhaps to fit in a smaller engine - but again, if there was a market for a small engined 380, mitsubishi would have made one: just as big manufacturers like BMW and Merc make small engine cars just for the Asian market.

i just fail to see any point...

This Mitsubitshi 380 can be the replacement of Perdana. However,I am certain that 380 will not be competitive enough with Accord Euro or Camry. In the future, our PM might seat in this Aussie car..lol.

Correct me if i'm wrong, isn't this your typical rent seeking service by proton? They are not more than a national car reseller.

will proton be slapped with an import duty?

blogged about it here.

the original news article on 8th March by "The Australian" seems to hint at Proton Edar distributing a version of the car instead of it being used to replace the Perdana.

I think this is either a VERY EXPENSIVE JOKE or an Exercise in Futility!

Interesting enough that Proton will want to import this vehicle to Malaysia. You would need to change the engine for a smaller engine as the road tax will be too high.

Also, to Paul Tan, the link is to industry report regarding auto sales in Australia. You can track the sales of all cars including Proton sales month by month and year by year. It give you an idea of how well Proton is doing in Australia. The link contains a list of vehicles that can run on 10% ethanol which comes from sugar cane. It seems that Proton cars can run on this type of fuel but I cannot see reports of it being sold in Malaysia. Why? Could it be that the fact it is not considered halal ?

Malaysia may as well close down Proton & import vehicles from abroad. We just have to admit that Malaysia has messed up big time in the Proton project. Proton cars are so filmsy & delicate compared to the steady cars like Holdens of Australia. Also MAS should be revamped with intelligent experienced blood instead of the dead wood administrators who are too busy chasing air-hostesses under MAS expenditure.
Selamat Pagi Malaysia - Wake Up!!!

Do you feel like a cow today? A cash cow to be exact. And they keep milking after 20 years and prolly another 20 years to come.

If we need someone to rebadge, I think Tan Chong or any other assembler can do a much better job and at a lower cost.

If the gomen dare to admit proton is a failure and close it down early, that would have save us lotsa money and trouble.

What about the job, the vendor? Well, more jobs can be created if we closed it 10 years earlier. Malaysia will be the Detroit of SEA instead of thailand if we infuse the right policy. I think what thailand has, Malaysia can do better, its just our policy that drown us.

We may even learn more technology from so many brands and vendor, instead from just one who is losing big money. We may even be the center of R&D for them if we had the right policy.

Well, it sum down to 2 things why its still here. Pride and muka. But Malaysia will have to take its toll for this unsustainable mukaness.

My question is whats so proud in rebadging and pass as your own. It will only make the Japanese and Aussie Laugh. Literally.

Do you feel like a cow today?

From a reliable source:
3.8 will be changed to 2.4 so that it could be marketed in malaysia effectively.

cheers.

here it's, another NEP products that benefit only croniess...at the expenses of rakyat...esp those riding on motobike!
