Parliamentary sitcom and court jesters

March 13, Screenshots ran a trailer alerting its readers of the return of the Parliamentary sitcom.

A teaser appeared in Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Quote from theSun story by B. Suresh Ram:

If you had attended parliament's morning session yesterday, you may be forgiven for feeling you were in a zoo instead.

Several MPs started labelling each other as animals when Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur) said Badruddin Amirulddin (BN-Jerai) was useless and did not have brains.

Badruddin responded by saying that Lim had otak binatang (animal brain).

Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam) got into the act and complained to Speaker Ramli Ngah Talib that the words otak binatang were unparliamentary.

Badruddin told Chong she was nothing more than an ular sawar (python).

Ramli stepped in, saying Lim's words may be sensitive but not seditious, while all the MPs were guilty of name-calling.

I am waiting for the Hansard and the relevant video recording to be uploaded on the Internet.

Meanwhile, savour what Badruddin Amirulddin (go check his track records in Google and wikipedia) had splashed in the same august chamber of Dewan Rakyat last November. At one point, I had wanted to convert this video clip into ringtone so that you can download it onto your mobile phone and forward it far and wide.

The video can be downloaded from Screenshots' vodcast channel, Whatzzup!

UPDATES: Karpal Singh and M. Kayveas were engaged in a 'Pink Panther' drama at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (Malay Mail, March 17, 2006 Pg 12)..

KARPAL: 'You have a history of fumbling... macam (like) Inspector Clouseau in Pink Panther."

M KAYVEAS: "I think you are not siuman (mentally sound). His brain is rosak (damaged)."

At the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Karpal asked the Prime Minister to state what steps were taken against a Sessions Court judge who allegedly abused a court interpreter. And that Pink Panther theme song played again..."Dead end, dead end, dead end dead end dead end dead end...."

Have you watched the M. Kayveas 'monyet' video I uploaded on Whatzzup! earlier this week?

Quote theSun, again...

Ramli stepped in, saying Lim's words may be sensitive but not seditious, while all the MPs were guilty of name-calling.

"I hope all the MPs will refrain from uttering such words in the House again," he said.

Earlier, as Lim continued with his debate on the royal address, Badruddin tried to invoke the Standing Orders, claiming that Lim's debate could create racial tension.

Badruddin said Lim's suggestion that the civil service was regarded as a "Malay civil service" was done with ill intention.

Lim had also asked why there were no non-Malay vice-chancellors in public universities.

Badruddin said although the Malays had sacrificed a lot for multi-racialism, they respected the concept because that was the principle of the Barisan Nasional.

Lim, obviously irked with Badruddin's comments, said that despite spending a term as a state assembly speaker, Badruddin obviously did not know what he was talking about.

lol..

and don't even try to think these are the ppl governing us??!!

scary...

This Badruddin has the worst record of being a MP.

He once referred to the Malaysian Indians as keling.
He also called opposition leader Lim Kit Siang “the damned, bloody stupid old man!” and last but not least his famous quote: “tak-suka-Malaysia-boleh-keluar”

No wonder Malaysia is First World Infrastructure, Third World Mentality. Malaysia Boleh!

Very country have morons in power. We should not be any different.

Every smart country would work on removing morons in power. We should not be any different.

Some of his track record (besides the ones mentioned above) which I blogged about also:

1. He is one of the members (by Minister's appointment) in the Board of Directors of Lembaga Tabung Haji (Pilgrims Fund Board).

2. During the 55th UMNO General Assembly Sept/Oct 04, he brandished a book on the 1969 racial riots and said:

"Let no one from the other races ever question the rights of Malays on this land. Don't question the religion, because this is my right on this land."

...and his glorious name was even featured in the wikipedia about the May 13 racial riots.

This is not the first time he has this 'Attention Deficit Disorder' fit. Jeff himself has even featured him twice for creating wonderful 'Parliament Sitcoms':

1. September 22 2005.

"MP Abdul Fatah Harun (PAS - Rantau Panjang) said increased cigarette prices and taxes did not reduce the number of smokers among the public that included members of Puteri and Wanita Umno."Muslimat also smoke cheroot."

2. Another sexual discrimination slur:

"JERAI Badruddin (to BATU GAJAH Fong Po Kuan - who is still single): "How long can the Yang Berhormat's husband stand her?"

BATU GAJAH Fong Po Kuan: "The Yang Berhormat from Jerai had made a malicious statement against me, which has touched on my personal life, which has no bearing on the matter being debated."

3. Satu lagi projek YB: Badruddin calls Kit Siang an‘Ah Pek'

"As vocal as he is, backbencher Badruddin Amiruddin (BN-Jerai) ‘outdid’ himself in the Dewan Rakyat this afternoon when he called opposition leader Lim Kit Siang “the damned, bloody stupid old man!”

He needs some serious medical attention besides being the Scarecrow joining Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) in the quest of you-know-what.

oh dear...no wonder the Parliment roof collapse. The roof itself could no longer stand hearing this morons making fool of themselves. I guess we can close down the National Zoo, we already have some species in our parliment...sigh...

If it had not been for Jeff'f many timely interevention, this blog and our parliament have many similarities.Let it go Jeff, forget the censorship and see if we are any different from our elected MP's.

JEFF OOI says: Let's get engaged in Internet-speak. It's called "moderating online forum", not "censorship" as you have claimed.

So, the Malaysian People voted for animals to represent them. I can see all Malaysian children being lead by example. What will happen when the parents tells their children not to shout and call names? Their kids will just turn around and tell their parent - but my Malaysian leaders and MPs are doing it....it must be correct. They tell schools kids to behave - then they go to parliment and misbehave ? Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE ELECTED MPs AND YOU VOTED THEM INTO POWER AND THEY CAN DO WHAT THE HELL THEY WANT!!!!! Afterall one of them said "because this is my right on this land" BN Boleh!!!

IMHO : There is few kind of ruling parties parliments members.

Type 1: Politic capital seeking. It simple word, Parliments is just their playground to gain more power. They don't care whether some of their act will jeopadize the Parliment with stupidity image, because they know their political master will cover them up.

Type 2: Furniture. They attend parliemnts but never give question/speech. Sometime you think they are part of the furniture.

Type 4: Longkang Parliment members. They always pretend working to nick-pick the unimportant, not harmful issue in local governments and make sure it is publish on paper. Bare in mind that those issuue are always irrelevant to their position. They are slightly better than furniture.

Type 5: Invisible or FFK. They rarely attend Parliments sessions. Nor the voters who votes them in place can find him.

Type 6: Working type. Sorry I can't find out.

Isnt the “tak-suka-Malaysia-boleh-keluar" is by our YB deputy education minister?

waste of money & time.. to all MPS ( as if they're listening)..please stop acting like a children!!! start doing your job.. you've been elected by us remeber..(or did they forget about it?)

1) Thanks to the stupid voters, we have such MPs in parliament.

2 Only in this country, is the Parliament an animal sitcom.

3) The Speaker cannot command respect at all

4) The name calling is always started by BN. How come? Is it to cover up for their inability to respond to questions?

5) And all credit to AAB for selecting them to be candidates for wakil rakyat. UMNO has got so many memebers and these are supposed to be the "cream"

Those who have broand can click this link and see how UK parliamentarians behave.

Sigh, what a long shot from our own menagerie.

To be more precise: "Malaysia Ini Negara Islam - You Tak Suka, You Keluar Dari Malaysia" - Dato' Paduka Haji Badruddin bin Amiruldin, Jerai MP (UMNO - Barisan Nasional)

He is so "well-known" for his bad mouth until wikipedia has the whole list of his bad history in Parliment:

HE IS A SHAME TO [ DELETED - Who you think you are qualified to make such sermon? ]

Apa Khabar...?
It doesn't matter either you vote or not vote, his seat is safe and of an automatic one too. You know what is the voters turnout at his place that day? The folks at kampong only greets with Khabar Baik, tak baik kalau kata kata-kata yang tak baik. Semuanya Baik.

& to moody,
Uncle Kit should be the one Type 6, he even reaches us in this blogosphere. Quite an advanced Ah Pek, he's afraid of missed us out. Try to changed the power of your glasses and may see...

Ya. We do provide some basic to intermediate trainning for monkies. It can do better job for us, though. Do you have coconut trees at your place ?

just would like to share this article for readers to reflect.

Malaysia on her mind

But she has no wish to return, even after 37 years, says US-based writer

Thursday • March 16, 2006

Juliana June Rasul
julianar@newstoday.com.sg

HER latest novel about three sisters who move from a relatively sheltered life in Malaysia to the raw realities of the United States somewhat mirrors her own life.

But unlike many authors who write from experience, award-winning writer Shirley Geok-lin Lim — who moved to the US as a Fulbright scholar in 1969 from her hometown of Malacca — said Sister Swing was created entirely from her imagination.

"My life is not like that," she said, erupting into laughter. "There is this quote from Flaubert. Something to do with how you have to live a very orderly and regular life to have the most violent imagination possible.

"The writer is not in charge of what she's writing. You let it take you wherever it takes you."

Where her writing will not take her, though, is back to Malaysia, despite the fact her first two novels were partly set there.

"It's quite impossible," she said. "The socio-cultural set-up there really demoralises the English-language writer," she said, naming writers who have left Malaysia and found success elsewhere, including Catherine Lim and recent Whitbread First Novel award-winner Tash Aw.

"But they will still write about Malaysia," she said. "It's inevitable. The imagination is most intimately and intensely formed when one is young."

But Lim does see a future where she will not feel the need to set any part of her novels in Malaysia. In fact, her next work will almost be entirely based in Singapore.

"I did leave Malaysia in 1969," she said with a laugh. "That's a whole lifetime ago!"

Sister Swing, according to Lim, grew out of a short story she wrote in 1981, called Mr Tang's Girls, which she extended during a year-long stay at a writers' commune on Whitby Island in Seattle.

Lim will meet her fans at the book launch this Saturday at the National Library.

JEFF OOI says: Let's stay on course to the blog topic. No further draiting after this commentary.

MPs behaving like mankeys at de august House making it a bigger Zoo than the national one off Jalan Ulu Klang (not so "ulu" after all cf with Jln Parliamen..) -- so after the all powerfool 1st Estate --Executive of 3rd world status, followed now the the 2nd Estate, a Legislature of monkey standard; well, we all know about the 3rd Estate of the Judiciary, emasculated completely under former PM Dr Mahathir, now jest recovering; finally we have the 4th Estate,of the Media -- which I liken to the Three Monkeys show. There were all at KLC4 when 2,000-3,000 common Joes/Janes gathered to protest for two Fridays, the mainstream press sent the THREE MONKEYS:
Got eye, No see;
Got ear, No hear;
Got mouth, No speak.--

Can we depend on 5th Estate -- Bloggers? -- to deliver?
I am patient; Wait&See!

how can malaysian bloggers be any different from mainstream media? they still live in the same environment and have the same fear. there are many subjects they will not touch. and if posted by others on their site, will be deleted. right jeff?

JEFF OOI says: Absolutely. The problem is not "Freedom of Speech" but "Freedom after Speech"..Internet does not guarantee that you can operate in a legal vacuum, and above the law. If you don't agree, set up up your own blog today, use your maiden name and not a pseudoname, host your server in Malaysia, and start spewing whatever you like including religiously and racially seditious thing. See what happens. Got balls ot take that challenge?

Off topic:

[ DELETED - Yes indeed, off topic. ]

Moreover I would like to add that language is not an indication of the quality of the work produced - one can produce great works of literature in their own "native" language which become duller derivatives after translation into Anglo-Saxon.

The kind of language is not the issue when insults are hurled frequently in Westminister parliaments (except of course in the ONE party state down south). It is the delivery and the context which will indicate one's wit and oratical skills. When will Malaysians see a professional actor in Parliament?

WTF!... after watching the video. The only thing I can remember clearly was "duduk duduk... monyet... monyet... peraturan peraturan... keluar dari malaysia..."

No wonder things does not progress!

Since we are talking about our now infamous zoo, let me ask Screenshot readers, what do you think will happen when you put a group of monkeys together with a hugh bunch of bananas? Sorry for this metaphor but this is how I see some of the UMNO (& BN) members in relations to the managing of our nation's coffer.

Did our Jerai MP ever given it a thought when he said to all and sundry that if we do not like this Islamic state, we can get out. Where do you think our brethren and sisters in Sabah and Sarawak is supposed to go? Here I am referring to our Kadazan, Murut, Bidayu, etc friends, the natives of East Malaysia. So to our friends in East Malaysia, this will not be the first and last time you are going to hear from our Jerai MP. It is a matter of time he is going to scorch you again.

Wonder in any reader is from Jerai... may be spread the word about his loud mouth bs i n the Parliament and get this MP kicked out!!!

Now are names and handles important? 'What is your name, each of you? What is all the fuss being called animal names? It is all part of the aggressive game during a heated debate. After all we are all animals if not what are we, vegetables?

But the animals have a sense of justice that you do not understand and built-in to that innocent sense of integrity there is a biological compassion, understood at the deepest cellular levels

william, let just say the last thing you want to see is the majority in sabah & sarawak takes up jerai mp's suggestion to "Keluar Dari Malaysia".

The ringtone is available in

http://www.freewebtown.com/bnjerai2005/

in various formats.. jeff please host it.. freewebtown has limited bandwidth.

I'm uploading the parliament monkey act and will make it available in http://sayno.to/Barisan-Nasional

We are animal but of course with history and civilisation. We cook and eat our food with chopstick, fork and well some with hands.

Hence, it's rude to call somebody animals. Especially when it is called to depict someone's behaviour eventhough he is under no qualification (that baboon is a lawyer not a shrink, right? Oh sorry for being so rude...)of saying so.

lsk,

I love to see that.

we are all animals, malaysia is a circus, who is the ring master?

guess some are really "animals" one way or another !

LKS need to save his energy ..without much support from the other MPs on his side ... he'll be all drain-out before this session is over ....all the best LKS!

By writing this piece I suppose I'm the 33rd person commenting on the circus going on in the august chamber of Parliament.

Parliament is a place where national policies are being debated and it must remain a chamber of dignity and not a place for name calling. Otherwise, it will become a place of laughing stock. If MPs want to do clowning, then they must do it outside this august chamber. There must be absolute decorum. If I may suggest, all MPs must read the book on parliamentary practice by Sir Erskine May so that the Malaysian Parliament will not fall to this low level.

I remember the days of Parliament where the chamber was having government leaders like Bapak Tunku, Tun Razak, Tun Dr. Ismail, Dato Abdul Rahman, Tan Siew Sin, and opposition members like Srineevasagam,Bustaman,Lim Kean Siew, later joined by Lee Kuan Yew, they had their heated arguments on the delicate establishment of the infant stage of Malaysia and more pressing issues of nation building, yet, these gentlemen maintained the best tradition of parliamentary practice without any name calling. Parliament is the place where sober minds must remain to iron out issues concerning the nation. Disagree as much as you want but please maintain the dignity.

The problem seems to have deteriorated over the years and made worst by mindsets which go back centuries old. Nation building does not come about by being extremists and ultras. Nation building must accept that there must be diversity and differences. The problem has not changed after almost 49 years of the birth of this country. We are still saddled in the mindset of mid-20th century unable to break loose to enter as a united nation into the 21st century!

MPs, the like of the Hon'nle Member of Jerai is a clear example of one who has become a slave of this mindset. Open his mouth he has no qualm to say that if you do not like, you can leave the country. This itself is unparliamentary and does not display parliamentary decorum. The Speaker seems to be very feeble to rule such utterance as the latest guff as unparliamentary and demand its withdrawal.

Please do not turn this august chamber into a circus where monkeys are monkeying around!

It's sickening, yes, with the way that guy acted and said.

However, I find it really disturbing that for some reason, the moderator so-called Yang Dipertua (?) can't silence this guy off. He could've just said STFU and kick him out, but for all that I know, that monkey guy can call him monyet and he will just say "jangan... jangan... jangan... jangan..."

as if "macam monyet" and "monyet" make a difference!

Yeah I'm ignorant of what exactly does that Yang Dipertua really do in Parlimen. Care to shed some light, anyone?

Peterpan:
Not true. If you look back in old Parliamentary records or just dig up some good history books (most of which, sadly, are either out of print or are available only from the West), you'll find that not all was rosy in early Parliaments.

According to Patrick Keith's Ousted! (which Jeff reviewed last year and might still be available in local bookstores) D.R. Seenivasagam got himself into a number of scraps with Alliance backbenchers. Among the insults recorded were phrases like "stupid ass", "bastard", "son of a bitch", "pariah" and the like. Maybe these incidents were less uncommon in the 60s, but they were by no means non-existent.

Regardless of the divisions, I find it rather offensive that the people's elected representatives are resorting to name-calling.

I believe that MPs are paid a salary or income which is above the average Malaysian's income.

Thing is, to cut a long rambling commentary short, it is the people's money that is being paid into their pockets to sit in Parliament and make good and wise laws for the majority.

They should have a bit of dignity and responsibility in spending Parliament time wisely instead of wasting time in Parliment calling each other names or arguing about rubbish like the colour of carpets in the Dewan.

Imagine having an employee (we pay their salaries via taxes, no?) who goes to the office and does nothing productive. Would you continue to employ that person?

Wonder why Uncle Kit didn't write his version of events yet. Every Malaysian should demand that MPs use their Parliament time productively.

It is a serious responsibility they have, and abusing it like this is downright sinful.

Sometimes I do question, are those "zoozilian" in the Parliament really know what they say. Do they really process what they wanted to say on their so called "brain" before voice-out? It makes them look so low class, with the title called Minister.

One more thing, and this is to address Badruddin statement, "Malaysia Ini Negara Islam - You Tak Suka, You Keluar Dari Malaysia". I totally agreed that the national religion is Islam. But the point is, hope you don't forget that the Independence Agreement 1957 do stated that we do need to live in democratic and harmony. This is called "respect". Althought parliament is the place to discuss sensitive issues, but certainly a kid would know how to behave when they speak.

If you need to humiliate or scold someone, please do it with "class". Don't you all watch movies. There are certainly a lot of nice phrases you can copy if you need one ...

Stop pointing fingers and name-calling, keep your asses up and start doing your work... we need excellence leadership and not junkies of "cakap tak buat" gang!

Further to my earlier posting in relations to our friends in East Malaysia, one of the conditions in the merger agreement of the east Malaysian states to that of the Peninsular in 1965 was that Malaysia was never to be an Islamic State. So I am wondering why UMNO (especially our Jerai MP) and PAS is so caught up in their pursuit to set up an Islamic state?

The biggest jokes is these monkeys are being paid by us!

Guess who is having the last laugh!

Me?? I am not voting...

JacknJill, Instead of not voting, how about not paying your taxes. Makes you fell better if you're not contributing any money to them... Ha ha ha :)

If the opposition asks questions in Parliament, it is always because they see something is wrong. Otherwise they will have no ground to make noise.

Since they are also citizens of Malaysia, the MPs and Ministers should see that the things they say need to be either refuted with facts or accepted as matters to be considered.

Heckling in that place runs counter to this rationale. In fact, it insults the very reason why the assemblies are convened. To debate, discuss and explore issues and proposals for the common good of all citizens. Including those under the opposition wings.

It's not like if the rakyat vote for the non-ruling parties must mean they give license to the ruling representatives to be abusive, deflective, incoherent, uncouth and counter-productive.

When to that you add race-based statements and innuendoes under the protection of Parliament, then you will not just get a cackle of empty-headed geese. You get the bastardisation of the ideals behind the formation of Malaysia.

It remains to say that this Jerai MP seems to be rankling how the bumis have been denied by the sheer presence of non-bumis amongt the rakyat. Why else would he contend that they have given up much for multi-racialism? Is there a hankering somewhere for a mono-racial Malaysia again? If this is going to fester in one parliamentary meeting after another, in some other corridor of power, in some school or coffee-shop or cabinet office, out with it now. It's not only unhealthy for not being debated once and for all. It's also insulting to the forefathers of this country whose spirit of mutual understanding and acceptance that had forged Malaysia the nation has been hijacked by a bunch of misogynous ultras whose time has past, but for their feeble-minded jibes.

Chew on this over the weekeend, Badri.

Oh My Godness.....how has Malaysia gone into such madness. We live in a same country and why do our leaders make such comments. If we want to achieve our WAWASAN 2020, we must be democratic and be respectful to each other. No wonder, my country is still mentally UNDEVELOPED. For my advise, every Malaysian should watch how does the Australian Parliament function. I am studying in Aus. and I can watch the live broadcast of the fortnightly Parliament. All the politicians and senators are thought argumentative in their speech, they are respectful to each other, I sincerely wish that our government can be more democratic and progressive. I witnessed lots of Malaysia-borned students turned away from their hometown and live in a more democratic country. I think this is an on-going migration for fellow indians and chinese in search for a better lifestyle. Sigh.......

All the best to Lim Kit Siang. Although I am not a DAP supporter, I am shaken by your perseverence and I wish you "Live for a million-million years." LOL

Thanks Johnleemk for the enlightening remark . But the difference then was that you have the Speaker, if I am not wrong, the late Tan Sri Kamil who would have ruled " unplarliamentary" remarks and these would have been withdrawn. But you have the current one adding more confusion to the situation!

Parliament is an august chamber where national policies and directions are being debated. Opposition and government MPs ask questions for debate and clarification so that the country is clear on the direction that it wants to move. Debates must have decorum and civility must exist. It is not a place to show ultraism to the extreme and being a champion of a particular community or race. It is a place where the government show that there is equity in every policy decision and direction that a certain course of action is being taken. It must not be construed as trouble making. This is not a place to show one is more superior than the other.

Yes, definitely. The current Speaker and his Deputies are making a mockery out of Parliament. I am still amazed that Nazri Aziz was not censured for his "bloody racist" tirade.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
