Malaysians asked to change lifestyle... ( 1 )

Fuel prices had gone up, and the Government asked the rakyat to change their lifestyle to cope with hard times ahead. The message is cascading down the grassroots level pretty fast, as observed by cartoonist Reggie Lee:

Here's a response from A Kadir Jasin in his blog:

It's okay for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Najib Abdul Razak to advise us to change our lifestyle in preparation for the high oil price policy.

But how sure is he that every Malaysian can change his or her lifestyle to cope with rising consumer prices, higher inflation and more moderate growth?

We are not talking about Ministers, top civil servants, the residents of Bukit Tunku and those with palatial official residences in Putrajaya.

These people can be prudent, no doubt. From a 5-litre car they can step down to a 3-litre one. From a family holiday in Las Vegas, USA they can downgrade to Perth, Australia. And there are many more things they can do to save money without risking hunger and indignity.

We are talking about padi farmers, smallholders, vegetable gardeners, low-ranking civil servants, construction workers, lorry drivers, low-ranking pensioners and those on welfare.

Can they rise up to Najib’s challenge and change their lifestyle when, in reality, they don’t have any kind of lifestyle to talk about?

Theirs is mere survival.

AKJ adds: "The irony of oil price subsidy is, while it benefits the rich -- those with fuel guzzlers – more but it has greater impact on the wellbeing of the poor. The rich can stomach the higher gasoline prices and the inflation it is causing but the poor is less capable."

the poor one has no lifestyle to change...

how about those stuck in the middle?! do they have any alternative way?!

so... we r all "bersamamu"... TV3...

5 liters car to 3 liters?! do u think they will?!

Change lifestyle? Maybe some can change, i.e. the affordable ones! But, the gov has not thought about the poor groups. Those who could not afford to change and there is no choice.

Actually, this impacts the poor the most.

This problem is easily solved by the affordable or the rich. Most of them have more than one house, they let out. All they have to do is increase the rent a bit here and there and they are not that burdened.

The businessmen also easy, increase the price of the goods and there it goes the problem.

But, the "makan gaji" group who had never get an increment since 2000? Maybe he has to send kids to school and wife to work?

Can he change lifestyle by asking her wife to stop work and stop sending kids to school? Take public transport? Where is the convenient public transport? The price has increased, but there is no public transport yet!?? halo!!!

What about those who has their children in private institutions and the fees are so much? Has the gov done anything to allow more non-bumiputra to enter public universities? So some maybe have to sacrifice and tell their kids to stop studying and start working? and where to go? maybe one day they will rob the bank? maybe one day they will join the gangster to earn a living?

AKJ is spot on!

changing lifestyles? not to worry.

what? assuming the rich to change lifestyle by changing a 5-litre to a 3-litre? i would rather assume they change a 5-litre to a 6-litre.

but not to worry. the government is showing us how to change lifestyle to one that is 'prudent' and 'conservative'.

the other day, pak lah got 5,000 bn leaders to meet. still dunno how they travelled to pwtc and the total mileage claims.

today, chan kong choy teaches us how to change lifestyle. he said that his ministry is considering having TWO examiners to test ONE candidate in a driving test. all because a certain learner driver was allegedly molested.

ahhh... how assuring especially the other hot news is about TWO brothers raping their own sister.

trust the government. they know best. they are a caring government and they will lead the way to show you how to be thrifty. as an example, assuming if you hire a maid and don't trust her enough, hire a second maid to keep an eye on the first.

oh btw, before budget season last year, samy vellu said that the government wants to abolish highway tolls subsidy because the compensation runs into hundred of millions each year. PLUS joins the elite club by turning in over rm 1 billion in profits. past few days, samy assures that toll will not be increased this year. my questions:

1.how much will the caring BN government compensate for the non-increase in toll?

2. the effect of hefty toll increase next year as seen in the like of the 30 sen fuel price hike?

aiyah. malaysia is a land of bees and honey. where have all the riches gone? evaporated into thin air?

hmmm... maybe i'd be smarter to fill my pockets than to lament. can't beat them, join them. the system is beyond redemption and malaysians mudah lupa. maybe they will wake up only when the sky falls on them.

all the jokes aside, the side effect of poverty is always an increasse in crime rate. when those who can't manage to make ends meet, all hell will break loose.

so, be extra careful about your personal security.

Why change your lifestyle?

Ths poor has got no lifestyle in the first place. While the rich has no need to change their lifestyle because the poor (incl. the middle income groups) are paying for them!

30 sen increase per liter is not going to stop all those huge MPVs from cutting in front of your Kancil!

BTW, the poor has got to remain poor so that they can continue to benefit and feed the rich. Isn't that why "we need more retailers to participate in Bursa" ?

Everyone is so pessimistic here I can think of only one plan -- bizarre and wicked.

Hhold darjat prayers that a BN member of Parliament/State Assembkly man drop dead while cycling to work or taking the LRT/crossing the road to rweeach their Mercedes Bent.
Haven't you noticed? With every BY-ELECTION, some how the BN Govt will find the MONEY -- bags and bags of CASH! -- to give out to the particular constituency and this is the ONLY TIME the Rakyat get to taste "oil dollars" (forget Petronas giving you son/daugther a scholarship! They want to know if tyyour parents are from UMNO, MCA, MIC first...).

I heard the former DPM Anwar's supporters used this "darjat" sessions effectively to have God's retirbution visit those who played a black hand in the re-energised no.2's fall from grace.
I l;ike to try it -- with my tehtarik (less sugar and milk to cut down by 10% cost!) -- to sustain my last ditch effort to do somethig for my s(T)inking NegaraKu.

does anyone really think the govt cares. There will be no price increase for this year , so says AAB but next year is only nine months away, and plus the toll increase..it will be a double whammy next year. We get the govt we deserve, so until you decide to put the vote to good use, we will have the same shit dished out. A strong opposition or representation in parliament will certainly make the BN think hard before the shove price increases down on us.
