Internet connectivity... problems
Sorry folks for the late uploads on Screenshots.
I have been experiencing Streamyx connectivity problem at home since March 28. Throughput has been around fifteen (15) kbps and at most, I had packets moving for 10 seconds before they all went dead, and the cycle went on and on. My wife couldn't dial into her corporate HQ network; my 9-year-old couldn't surf to download pictures for her homework; neither could I surf to prepare my blog entries. It's very frustrating.
I hope TM net could help me look into Complaint Report No. 1240434 ASAP... I finally managed to talk to the guy behind 1300-88-9515 after so many tries in the last two days.
Farish A. Noor SMS-ed from Germany, and my Malaysian Business editor called to complain that they had been reading only old pages on Screenshots.
Are the ISPs screwing up on their caching machinery?
In the last one week, I have been facing Internet connectivity problems both at home and while abroad. Syusyah betol!
UPDATES: Several readers have the same problem with Streamyx lately. Read on...
We are in the same boat...

Subject: Internet connectivity .... problems
Dear Jeff The same happened here, in Bukit Rahman Putra. The whole of yesterday my streamyx connection was down. This occured once every 1-2 months or 2-3 months period. Talked to 1300 88 9515 each and every times, and the following were the "standard" respond; 1) It cound be your modem problem, your PC...etc 2) turn off your modem, unplug the cable ... on their back 3) Your router may be problem, disconnect it, put back the single adsl....etc. 4) the connectivity is still down. They cant locate the location...etc. 5) send your pc to the PC technician to check...etc 6) "Call us back the next time you encounter this problem... etc. They are in the blue and have no answer to the above. The beautiful thing is that the streamyx up and running the next day, sometime two days later. Most of the Customer service at 1300 88 9515 were being unfair and unprofessional to blame "its your modem, PC or router" giving problem. Everytime, I will be giving them a good a@b$c%. I wonder, afterall we are paying to use streamyx, it performs at >50% discount i.e. 1M but running in less the 400bps, and periodically the connectivity problem. Teruskan your good work. Cheers PG
From Patriot1994:
I have the same slow connection with streamyx. Here is my findings: 1. Small packet can go thru, but slow. 2. Larger file more than 5k will become extremely slow and most likely fail to download/send. 3. I tested port 25, 80, 443, 22. All experiencing the same problem. 4. I notice that ping and traceroute (ICMP) are okay. Fast and responsive, however, about 20% lost packet.I experience this since 29 March night.
It seemed that something "stuck" causing packet lost. I guess the utilization is quite low. Just lost packet.
Can't work at home... spoilt my plan to "change lifestyle"!

Jeff,
I have the same problem here in Penang. Has been in this condition for the past couple of months. Speed is now back to dial-up speed - so now considering "downgrading" to the RM20/month package, whichever is the cheapest since there is no point having "broadband" now.
Remember that ad from Telekom/TMNet explaining the cause being due to some people using broadband to download movies, etc, and hence causing the congestion on our so called "broadband"? I suppose this kind of excuse can only happen in Malaysia?

the 1-300-88-9515 and 1-300-88-1515 is not good, they treat everyone like all of us are pc ILLITERATE! blaming our pc, nic, router, switch for the slow connection they are providing.
Call up the TMNet Kelana Jaya is whole lot better. They solve my problems regarding my streamyx or even with my telekom line within 2 working days where as 1-300-88-9515 and also kedai TM at DU is doing nothing to get my phone line and streamyx back online after i move house. I call up 1-300-88-9515 and kedai TM at DU for weeks before i gave up and call the Kelana Jaya branch!
TMNet Kelana Jaya is still the BEST!!!

Tmnet is just trying to attract new subscriber to signup, once signup then you are done because you have to use their service for at least a year as in their terms & condition.2 years ago when i signup for 512k package i was given a 384k without my knowledge for 2 month until my friend came to my place and told me my connection is a 384k,so end up i call the helpline for a few times then they gave me back the 512k.Recently a friend of mine also had the same problem. He register for the 1MB package,he got the 1MB but then after a month the connection suddenly become 512k.After 2 week they still cant resolve the problem because they dont have 1MB port available anymore. They gave the port to some new subscriber.

Streamyx being down has become almost normal for me. Happens once every two months. Sometimes more often.
I call that number and wait for 10 minutes; no one picks up. So I call again and wait 5 minutes. If I'm lucky, someone will pick up. Otherwise I have to try again. I have had an experience when I have tried to dial in for an HOUR and no one picked up.
Anyway, once someone is on the line, they will lead me through the same steps each and every time, with a 100% probability that their “solutions” will be a waste of my time.
1. Switch off your PC, reset your modem and restart your PC (duh, I would already have tried this)
2. Disconnect from your router and use one PC to connect directly to the modem because it might be a router problem (of course it’s not a router problem; my house runs on a network and on the computers can access each other)
3. Try to dial using a manual connection (how does this help?)
4. Try to make a new connection – there could be some thing wrong with your old connection (if I have never used a manual connection, why on earth would something be wrong with my old connection?)
5. Reset your modem again (WHAT!?!)
6. Flush your DNS (I already tried that)
7. Reset your modem again (now this is getting plain stupid)
8. Sorry, we do not know what the problem is but we will get a technician on your case. (Well yeah, of course I know that you do not know what the problem is. You’re just a telephone operator. Next time, just call the technician straightaway please.)
Last month, I was without broadband for SIX whole days. I called four times to check on my report. Each time they told me I would have to patiently wait. I told them my Internet is not usable. I have a speed slower than that of dial-up! Want to know what the nice operator said to me?
“Yeah, but you can still use the Internet right? So use first lar.”

heard that TMNut going to limit the BT (bit torrent) download speed. Is that true? If it is true, then what is the purpose of having a broadband service?

I believe I also experienced the same downtime on streamyx like you guys recently. As usual like you guys, I called 1-300, mine better, they asked me to go look for an IT specialist to turn off my 'auto-log in' function which has been set in my modem!!!! Imagine that IT specialist. I had tp endure 4 phone calls, each not lasting less than 15 mins to talk to them! I finally ask to speak to a supervisor..of course they did not dare as I already gave hell to the girl I was speaking to. And they keep denying that their service was down(I'm in Wangsa Permai, Sri Damansara). And at the beginning of the phone call to them, there was a message that said service was down in Bukit Lanjan and Sri Damansara area. Why they keep denying that there was a service failure then is really beyond me! I really cannot understand our local internet provider. And the sad thing is we cannot even move to another broadband provider coz at the end of the day line out to the world is still Telekom! Maxis? Jangan harap lah...coverage is like peanuts!

Dear Jeff , same problem here is Amapng .
Everytime I called the 1-800-88-9515 , the telephone operator just tell me all those nuts-thing as mentioned on some previous reply ...
I already done that even before the operator tells me ....
I just told them that i have done that before ... Everytime , they seems to be shock when they heard thet ...
I have almost one week connection fail every months !!!! since i started to use the Streamyx ...
I just have a one week connection down before this post . I almost called the 1-800-88-9515 number everyday . Untill now , i have even memorised the key press seequence . I can almost dail blindly ,without looking to the phone .
Everytime i having a connection down , when the operator that get my phone call , i almost wanted to marah them everytime .
Everytime i requested to speak to the manager of the customer service , they just divert me to the second level only , and thats all ....
I'm one of the people who always sufferring connection service down , why dont the TM Net try to improve their service , and shorten the down time needed to be used to repair the problem ??
Now , my connection has been restore , but new problem appears ..... MY PHONE COULD NOT DAIL OUT / IN !!!!
arrrgh !! I'm very disappoint with the service that i have been using .....
Compair to other countries ... Their BroadBand is cheapper than us , and the speed was also faster and gaurenteened to be having the full speed of the package that subscribed .
Why the Internet access fees in Malaysia still so expensive ? If the fees is so expensive , how can everyone go online ? how can the computer be more publicalise ????

Got a major bandwidth hiccup here a month ago. I've did the same things also and all that TMNet asked me to do is to clear up my DNS cache and call them back should there be any further problems.
Surprisingly, throughout that period, my Bittorent connection is normal, but not for direct HTTP download. I can only get around 15K max. It also affects streaming music significantly. It's buffering more often than before and it's very frustrating. I lived without streaming music for almost a month!

Everytime I get slow download speeds, I would do an ipconfig. ie. at the DOS prompt, type ipconfig/release followed by ipconfig/renew.
Learnt that from a hotel in Shanghai. So far, it had worked for me all the time.

this is a problem of monopoly.
Imagine if you only have maxis & celcom running around without digi, the basic call rates will still be 60 cents a minute.
tmnet is facing problems in all angles & the internal rational is people are abusing the network. From downloading to multi player games. However, they dont understand that the purpose on broadband is to do such things.
if we give in to this we would see tiered based internet rolled out. Meaning, you & I could only use 100 mb a month or you could only use google 1000 times a month.
so its time to bring in a foriegn competitor as tmnet clearly dont know their customers well OR remove the overheads of satellite internet connection.

Here is one thing you may do to get the connection work, but not the speed. At least it fixed the reliability. You can change MTU. I set mine to 494 for the WAN. You can try 760. The default was 1454 for ADSL+PPPoE.
Why change MTU? I notice that I can't send out a file that is 30K size. Also a long letter that is 7K size. So I guess the Streamyx routing equipment somehow dropped large packet from passing thru. They do this normally is to implement QoS, where the strategy is to let small packet pass thru first and push large one to the back. I guess they have misconfigured it by dropping large packet. Or the equipment simply running out of queue buffer.
Anyway, you now change your packet size to smaller one to get thru this hard time.
The 494 is a 33% of normal 1454 MTU size. 760 is 50%.
Once I did this, I am able to send out file size of 30K. Sending 7K email also work.
Do note that it is still not reliable due to lost packet. But TCP will retransmit. Just retry if lost connection.
My location is Puchong.

Correction, it is 734, not 760.
Formula: 734 + 26 = 760. And (760 - 40) / 48 = 15.
The normal 1454 is this: 1454 + 26 = 1480. And (1480 - 40) / 48 = 30.

I had the same problem here in Johor. It happened to my company's connection. The bloody ADSL connection' so unstable, happened now and then. And as mentioned, the connectivity sometimes comes to a crawl. Called the helpdesk, totally useless. Prior to this job, I was working for a SI company in Cheras and had the chance to service TMNOC in CJ. Guess what I had to backup for those pepz? GBs of STUFFS(u know what i mean), MOVIES, MUSIC and the list goes on! Talk about regulating home users, why not regulate your own employees first, TM!! Oh and one more thing, those pepz were more concerned about us wiping out their STUFFS rather than their DATA during the backup operation.
