Hi-speed broadband & Haadyai SIM cards

Energy, Water and Communications minister Dr Lim Keng Yaik highlighted two issues yesterday.

One: He chided Telekom Malaysia for providing only 1MB of connectivity for RM80 while an Australian could get a 100MB connection for RM156 (AUD $60).

He said he didn't want to criticise Telekom but he wanted "to push them to provide 1MB when they say 1MB, not 550KB". And he wanted TM to provide 10MB at an affordable price.

Today's DSL technology is do-able for 10Mbps deleivery. But TM has to first optimise its copper networks, and interface housing developers' fibre-on-the-curb with the last-mile delivery to home at once. Or else TM Streamyx is helpless in providing high-speed broadband.

TWO: Mobilephone SIM cards issued in Malaysia were being sold out of the country, naming as examples Haadyai in Thailand and Guangzhou in China.

This is common knowledge. And I can attest that the brand isn't Celcom.

There was a third issue Dr Lim took up, though an old one. The celcos are not registering prepaid users fast enough. The celcos just drag their feet and remain cincai.

» Internet connectivity... problems from Screenshots
Sorry folks for the late uploads on Screenshots. I have been experiencing Streamyx connectivity problem at home since March 28. Throughput has been around fifteen (15) kbps and at most, I had packets moving for 10 seconds before they all... [Read More]

It's about time, it's about time that we can enjoy a proper broadband speed

good that LKY finally pointed out our dial-up-like broadband.

Another good change your lifestyle example ;)

i think dr. lim was contemn by a lot of peoples on the 3G spectrum issue.

he must say something to sort list in the good men list.

anyway, i support what he said this time and hope it's not remain as a talk only.

by the way, should we give a time frame on this broadband issue? don't tell me the 10mb only will be available during year 2020.

Doesn't LKY know that (according to Telekom/TMNet) our broadband capacity is low due to "too many people using file-sharing programs e.g. BitTorrent to download bandwidth-gorging stuff like movies and all that?"

We should all just be sending/receiving emails and nothing more if you want Telekom/TMNet to provide you with the bandwidth!

I just the luv the excuses these guys are coming up with... and they want 1 million subcribers???

Anyway, ADSL is sooo "old school" and LKY should get Telekom to invest in newer technologies. Unless he is not aware of them??

who cares about LKY?

I'm really disappointed at TMNet services...from the point of registration till termination..nothing more than wasted time & money!
I hope all the new players will perform..BTW, Kota Kinabalu will soon be a Wireless City...only cost RM29.90 for 2Mbps line...check it out here www.sedcom.com.my

Well! Telekom policy was " Mahu pakai, pakai, tak mahu potong saja" This concept being going for century lah. Offer 1M bandwith but actual only 128kps. You guy need to get use to it. In BOLEHland and policy was CAKAP LAIN BIKI LAIN.

I heard some talk a while ago about deregulation of the last mile loop...similar to what was done in the us and europe. Any idea on what transpired..was it just talk...as usual?

The Forth issue by LKY (TheSun 28/03/06) - Vintage Lim.

"Don't laugh (he tells Koh), you're going to get an earful from me afterwards".

LKY said when not many are aware a book (MyICMS 886) he launched 3 months ago.

I don't think TM really cares. All they want is to continue milking the public because they have 'almost' the monopoly. Liken it to highway toll!

If not for Digi, do you think we can have such low mobile rates ?

Let the best people run services in the most competitive way possible else there is nothing LKY can do but whine.

Broadband Mobile internet access can be big business in this country and fill the gap where TMnet broadband fails to deliver. Unfortunately, those licenses were not given to the most competent companies.

My company used Time Broadband for almost 3 years, and about 9 months ago we subscribe Streamyx and intend to use it as our main line and treat our Time Broadband as a backup line (Streamyx is 1Mbps and Time is only 512Kbps); but i have to give up this initial plan because Time Broadband is much more faster and stable than Streamyx after i gave some test on it.
Last week, i've received call from TMNet and was told that our line has already free upgrade to 2Mbps. My conclusion after gave some test on both of the broadband service : still the 512Kbps Time Broadband outpace the "2Mbps" streamyx!!! WTF!!! Hopes LKY really take it serious this time after so many times of tok kok about telekom poor service!

Don't you all know that you have to call TMNET to remove the download speed barrier to 1MB after you have sign up? The default bandwitdh is below 512kbps. So, if you don't call, they can save some bandwidth utilization.

Looking at this plan by this AU ISP. I think we're better off than them?

Did LKY made a wrong comparison and talking about 100MByte istead of 100Mbps?

Nothing comes free, if TM can do this and margin is very high, the Board for TM from Khazanah should just rule it for a go. They have a say, but did not say any?

Or are we shooting blanks again?

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
