Fuel price hikes & changing lifestyles...

Same 40-litre tank, what I used to fill up at RM60 before February 28 now costs me RM72. I am starting to feel the pinch in paying that extra RM12 every week. Thirty sen per litre can mean that much nowadays. How about you?

Here's a mixed bag of knee-jerk responses from my fellow bloggers and readers. Let's see what they did over the weekend.

Reader Sairay tried to go inside www.pmo.gov.my j to participate in the online public opinion poll on the 0.30 sen fuel increase and was defeated before he could begin. Here's the evidence.

PMO_Down_060312.jpg

Blogger TV Smith managed to access the 'official poll' at another PMO website, the Public Complaints Bureau, but found it a phising site for surfers' identity, and the questionnaire self-serving.

So, TV Smith started his own poll, by asking 6 questions of his own:
1 ) We hate the official poll because...
2 ) In our minds, a GLC is...
3 ) We are angry because...
4 ) Yes. We feel your pain. How about...
5 ) Nicest way to rub salt into the wound...
6 ) Funniest ploy by far...

Try to take part lah...

Meanwhile, Patrick Teoh, still running the 'OKT on LRT' Best Caption Contest, took his family on trip around KL central business district on a RapidKL stage coach, and found out two things.

One, he found out what is meant by RapidKL KLCC "hub" where you are supposed to change buses like get from Putra LRT to Star LRT at Masjid Jamek. Look at his picture, complete with... another caption!.

Two, 'First World infrastructure, Third World maintenance' has come staring at Pak Lah in the face. Probably because the RM4.4 billion saved from fuel subsidy didn't benefit the landmark architecture.

Meanwhile, I spent my time yesterday watching helplessly as my volunteer tech team tried to resuscitate LensaMalatysia.com website which came down two weeks ago. Earlier, jeffooi.com came down afterr the harddisk crashed (and data recovery was outsourced to specialists which cost big money), and then it came under DDOS attacks

Now that both servers are back up after some hardware and software upgrades, I have to look into how to reduce maintenance and bandwidth costs. Servers must change lifestyle as well, I reckon, so I have started a Donation via PayPal campaign. Time is hard, you knooooowww.

But, over the last weekend, I was researching into ways to avoid painful medical bills. During time like this, we can't afford to fall sick. Can we?

hmm...talking about medical bills...i wonder if the specialist consultant's fees have gone up since i'm due for my next check up.

cost me extra RM14 per re-fuel...that is still bearable..if not for the extra RM0.50 for my usual bowl of mee..extra RM0.20 for my usual teh ais...and extra extra extra..for other things...

You may use the services of our general hospitals if you want to cut costs.

They charge roughly a tenth of what you pay in private hospitals.

went to a specialist for some tonsillitis infection and hv to cough out rm955. I was not even hospitalised. Blardy doc carhged me RM80 for a simple job of administering a jab on my butt, RM45 for consumables used such as a syringe (cost is less than RM1), a gauze (less than RM0.50).

No way can the retirees live on, given the widespread and helluva rapid price rises in goods and services. Do they cook goreng pisang with gasoline?

Yet this govt has up-to-now not a pipsqueek on how this group of citizens who have served the country with distinction and personal sacrifice in the past can continue to now survive under such an inflationary regime.

Change of lifestyle? They didn't have one then. How can they can even live now?!

In one stroke, this govt is finishing off the entire silver-hair group.

Shall i self-immolate myself in front of badawi's motorcade to prove a point?

Just say the word, i'll do it for them.

Are you serious? Only RM 12/week? How about doing it every 2 days? That's RM 180/month! What can RM180 do for you? For me it's:

a) whole 2 weeks budget of buying fish, veggies, crabs, chicken, and dry spice from the local pasar borong

b) can pay 2 months of Streamyx service

c) can pay 2 months of monthly hphone bills

d) can pay 3 months of Astro

e) can pay 1 month of utility bills

f) can service the car every month

Fun eh? Can you think of any more?

Restaurant Operator Caught Hiking Price Of 'Roti Canai' By 40 Sen

IPOH, March 13 (Bernama) -- A restaurant operator in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, was caught red-handed hiking the price of its "roti canai" and "roti puri" from the normal 60 sen a piece to RM1, Sunday by enforcement officers.

Tipped off by the public, Perak enforcement director of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Mohd Khalis Kassim led his officers to the restaurant for a meal to find out the truth.

Khalis said he noticed the price of the two breakfast favourites was marked on a board as 90 sen a piece before the meal but the operator wanted to charge RM1 when the officers called for the bill.

The operator blamed the price increase on the difficulty of getting wheat flour, the main ingredient for the two breads, which he had to buy from Ipoh, about 135km away by road, he told reporters, here Monday.

The officers gave the operator a warning and told him that the next time he was caught raising his prices indiscriminately he could be charged under the Trade Descriptions Act 1972 which carries a fine of up to RM100,000 or three years jail or both.

Khalis said enforcement officers also warned a restaurant in Green Town Mall here which sold mineral water at RM1.50 a 500ml bottle when the usual price was RM1.

Complaints of unreasonable price hikes since the increase in petrol and diesel prices on Feb 28 can be directed to the enforcement division at toll free line 1-800-886-800.

common sense.. why KFC and McD price in Genting and KLIA is different ?

Most MPs only want to hear good news or how great they are. If you say bad things about them, they will sue you and win. They in turn can claim that you are a bad and say anything they want, get it published in public and you cannot sue them......it called Parliment.

A thought has just crossed my mind and would like some feedback on it. The price increase of 30sen works out to around RM4bil plus and it generally affects the whole population of 25 million.
Lets say we get MITI to take back all the APs(which will resurface again) and get it to charge say RM30k each for the people who want to buy a foreign car that will go into say a development fund. ie.which will benefit the masses and not just a few AP Kings.
Lets do the math, lets say
60,000APs x RM30k =RM1.8bil !!!
Correct me if i'm wrong that should make up half of the govt subsidies that can help benefit a large number of the rakyat.
This way there will be more effective collection of duties so no more under declaring thus more money collected for the govt.
It's mind boggling how the media is spinning the necessity of the rise when a solutionas simple as this is staring them in the face. why the govt choose to burden a whole country and benefit the privilaged few is beyond me.

Yes, there are plenty of grievances on this phenomenon as fuel price hike will be a chain reaction for all other items to increase as well. Despite all the worry and resentment, we have to move on.. to the next steps...
