Eyecare scare: Bausch & Lomb defiant
On Wednesday night, Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek issued a directive for the withdrawal of ReNu, a multipurpose contact lens solution manufactured by US-based Bausch & Lomb, after he was informed by Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital in Petaling Jaya of cases of fungal keratitis infections among its patients who had used the solution.
So what? The American company is adamant and reiterates that it sees no reasons withdraw the product from Malaysian market, though it has voluntarily done so in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Via theSun (March 17, 2006, Pg 6):
The manufacturer of ReNu multipurpose contact lens care solution says it sees no reason to withdraw the product from the market as it has not been officially advised by the Health Ministry to do so.In a statement yesterday, Bausch & Lomb pointed out that, as yet, no cause for the infections has been found and the suspected cases in Malaysia have still to be verified.
The company has advised the health authorities to determine the cause of the infections in order to take the necessary preventative steps. It promises to support the authorities in the matter.
Minister Dr Chua has to prove whether he barks or he bites. Or let the imperative of Malaysian government's health policy go to the dogs.
UPDATE: The Star (March 16, 2006 Pg N35) says Bausch & Lomb will comply with MoH directive and it will take ReNu off the shelves.
However, The Star says at press time, some optical stores and pharmacies had yet to receive any directive to withdraw the solution.
This news item was, however, not available in Star Online at the time I blogged this.
I appeal to Screenshots readers to be the eyes-and-ears of the Government so that eyecare outlets found non-compliant with the MoH directive are exposed.
Comments
When you have parliamentarians calling each other animals and other names and Ministers and Prime Ministers being indecisive how else do you expect any cocky person or company to behave. I guess this attitude is encouraged by the BN led government!

First , there are no official proof that some batches of ReNU are contaiminated.
Second, the number of cases of eye fungi infection do relate to the usage of RENU. However , it may be only correlation , not directly point to RENU.
The withdrawal of RENU from Singapore and HongKong is " voluntarily" based on government advise and not officially as Sinagpore and Hongkong MOH are very professional in this matter , after all no conclusive result that pin point to RENU.
Dear Dr Chua, as I mentioned in my previous reply, public safety is in the hand of government machinary and it has to be like military cation , well-thought and decisive.
Again, we proved that you are not handling this incident decisively and professionally, only paying lip service to public.
By the way, Bausch and Lomb is an intenational company with a lot of lobbies around. They may sue you or upset you if you do not handle properly.
Go out and start to gather your fact and evidence.
Afer all , we are indeed overjoy and over-reacted.
I am dying to know whether you have really officially spoken (not to mention issue statement) to Basuch and Lomb or just fool us.
Mr Jeff Ooi, please "officially" retract your thanks to Dr Chu as your blog represent some of our voice.
JEFF OOI says: No. I stand by my earlier decision to give credit to and commend Dr Chua and the Malaysian Government for their action in protecting the Joe Public and the unassuming consumers. When it comes to eyecare, we should be like all First World countries -- Singapore & Hong Kong included -- we shouldn't take chances. And our Ministry of Health should be commended for taking professional advisory from Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital as a foundation for its decision on the matter. That is being professional and responsible as far as a government ministry should do. The Moh did just that, so I won't stinge my thanks to them.

Yawn. It seems B&L ASEAN has no idea about damage control and corporate image.

Jeff,
As the internet has a certain force in mobilising grassroot resources and support for various issues, why not consider, should there be a strong case against the B&L eye solution, mobilising consumer protest so that B&L may consider looking into their products if official directive does not have any bite.
After all, we are the consumer, it is the health of our eyes in question and I'm sure there are choices available out there in the market for this kind of solution for the eyes apart from B&L.
Just a thought.

B&L may be defiant. Then again, what's so difficult abt writing a letter to inform B&L officially especially on such important issues.

Does anyone knows what we should do with the bottles that has already been bought but no yet used? or only used halfway? I'm personally not a contact lens user but my brother do have 2 bottles lying around.

Since I am aware of this issue, I've stop using it.
(Thanks Mr Jeff Ooi for letting us know what is actually happening. If not, we will be like "katak di bawah tempurung")
On top of this, I still have 3 new bottles sitting "nicely" on my shelves. I don't want to take any chances - as there are still a lot of excellent scenery of girls, movies, etc.
For heaven sake, B&L do something about this. And I am very serious and concern on this issue. And with the budget so tight, "thanks" to the increased in petrol price, every cents we spend must certainly worth the value.

Jeff, in this whole incident, you thought that you are the crusader and that is why you reluctantlly withdraw your gratitude on Dr Chua and MOH.
We are the citizen of this country. It is the duty of the government to protect us by their means. In this incident, you strongly believe that the government should take the professional advice from the Datuk Hussen Onn Hospital. In turn , it reflects the government lacking of expertise and domain knowledge in critical area.
What next, are we going to ask the private hospital to advise government on HMF diease and avaian flu ?
I suggest you comment to ask Dr Chua to outsource his ministry , MOH to Singapore and HongKong to reduce its headcount.
There are endless possibilitiess based on similar situations :
1) We need to ask private investment to help EPF to invest wisely and later thank EPF for their action
2) We need to alert Samy Vellu about structure cracking and later thank him
3) We need to ask MPSA to look into the flash flood problem and appraise Toyo later
Jeff, thinking aloud ...
JEFF OOI says: Add one more line... We need a life, especially for those who missed the trees for the woods.

I've been a ReNu user for years. It's not difficult to identify contaminated products and if there's no proof, then why are we pointing fingers. The Singapore MoH has deemed their investigation "inconclusive" on whether ReNu is to be blamed. Eye infections are typically due to a user's behaviour and that hasn't been ruled out, has it?
