Defining broadband
Broadband? Expect speeds of 100 megabytes to 1 gigabytes per second when surfing the Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure, dubbed the new digital superhighway in Singapore, in less than 10 years' time.
By 2015, Singapore will be transformed into the first totally wireless and wired country in the world with the new ultra fast-speed National Broadband Network reaching 85% of households there. To make it happen, the private sector has been invited to partner the government in this bold project.

*Huge file cam be sent at high speed.
*instead of minutes, you'll need only seconds to download a song.
*Students at home can download entire videos of lectures ina snap.
*Images from live video calls to overseas will be move smoothly, not jeckily.
*Lightning-speed connections will bring movies via video-on-demand.
*Sharper images on high-definition TV.

Is very sad that Singapore don't have to declare a Multimedia Super Corridor, and yet they can convert the whole Island a such Superduper.
Instead of Putrajaya, why not we take Penang Island to benchmark with Singapore Island ? An Apple to apple; Island to Island comparison.
But as of today, the silicon rush era has over, Penang Island is still backwards than she was in the 60's. In those days, Penang was very very busy.
Was Education Center for overseas Chinese, was Tourists Center among South East Asian, was named the Pearl of the Orient. Is over the millennium now, the previous glamours has far gone to the drains, she's yet struggle with her 60's hardwares and softwares.
Old traffic system, trishaws (la becha)'s still available at harbour area, riding with congested and yet congesting slow moving Penangites Style of relax driving streets.
People who admires beautiful penang as in her 60's moved in from other town, and rules Penang. And, the original Penangites have already moves/migrates out of Penang. What a hijrah ya. Yeah, she do have KOMTAR, Penang Bridge, but in tourists eyes, that can't shine the faded pearl, not a place for enjoy and vacation.
Now, Penang is neeting her end of silicon rush era, what else can Penang to shines again beside struggling with old infrastructure. I think, Penang Chief need to think seriously, with Pak Lah help, just like Tun Dr M helping Langkawi. Penang should be able to Shine again if she embrace truely, this K-generation era, and new digital superhighway, broadband will provide Penang a better competitive edge, and be shinning again.
Only if she knows...

Penang is not a Malay showcase, so she is not allowed to run, she must be handicapped in case the DAP captured the island.

Work at home. Make home nice, put in camera and etc. No need to travel. Won't bother the petrol price at all.
If it take 2015 for Singapore, how long it take for Malaysia?

good way to save petrol :)
The standard in 2015 is(should) around 200 mbits/s. Anything less would be considered as dial ups compared with 2006.
great move for SG to start this. perhaps, Malaysia's 1st developed state could start offering free wi-fi & charging corporate clients advertisement fee. Think Google.
Jeff: Any news on Satelite Internet connection?
Many stay at locations without broadband. while dialups for 20 hours a day is VERY costly, Satelite Internet connections provides a viable solution.
I also noticed that the price for Satelite connection provided by local telcos are RM 200 - RM 600 more expensive than the same service available in Thailand.
Whats the status on these laws.
Also, from Engadget & slashdot, a guy built a tall (40 foot, i think) antena just to get some broadband. Is it legal to do it here?
Thanks in advance.

Airsnort,
Sabah have over 1 million illegal immigrants possibly with MyKad now, Penang got or not?
Sabah got Teh Tarik in most shop RM 1.90 a glass, Penang got or not?
Every place has their own crap that we the local have to face,
Having said that this is out of topic, reason Singapore now pushing what they called FTTH (Fiber To The Home) as many country pushing is because they never have to spend on
Stuff like RM 100million for smart school that is not so smart.
Tjwork,
Satellite internet connections already exist (1mbps/256kbps - RM 1,000 a month) for ages, only problem is it is not very affordable since MCMC do not want to give out license to allow any other companies other than Telekom Malaysia to own International Internet Gateway.

As long as government has no budget, protecting Telekom with its current quality of broadband service, low demand, competitors got thumb down by internetphobia-politicians for building one etc., we can forget about ultra fast-speed NBN.

They should be bolder. Envision Penang like a singapore and cut the balloon. Free her from the fetters of malaysian DNA. Return her freeport status compensated by increased tax revenue from increased FDIs that will return. Make USM and her other schools merit-based. Open her market completely to the outside world - open access skies, freeflow HR, offshore activities, casinos, mini-China, mini-India, mini-Thailand. Give her the chance to recruit worldclass city planners. Unchain her from race-based policies. Make her the densest place of foreign entrepreneurial activity in SEAsia. Create the most fertile incubator bed to launch a new model for Malaysia. Make Penang the testtube of new lifestyle developments. Make her beautiful, vibrant, thriving. What have we got to lose? Another rundown JB/Klang/ShahAlam sleepytown? Just do it. No more time.
It's tundra temperature here.

Chrispeduck,
Sorry la Bro. I didn't know Sabah also have many world record breaking things...Actually the plan to spend for smart school is good, but the real agenda is not SMART SCHOOL. tHE REAL AGENDA IS THAT kronies SUDAH TAK DAK PROJEK. SO, simply create one la...at the expense of the rakyat. Projeck worth 100 million. Actual spend I think less than 50%.
Neil,
You mentioned that higher learning institure like USM should be based on merit. Let me tell you. The VC job which is rotated every 1 or 2 years is a political post actually. You should see how the VC lobby here and there when their terms are up. They are more precooupied to "KULUM JILAT HERE AND THERE" rather than running a University.
Telekom Malaysia maintaining copper cable also big problem, how to maintain fiber optic cable. Have you seen their exchnage center? They use product like HYU DAI and LG. Come on la...Hyundai buat kereta..boleh la...LG pula peti sejuk..Network punya barang mana bole...That is why our SDSL and ADSL line alwyas have problem..There are better network equipment company that solely do network equipment..They tak mau beli...nasib baik Proton sama Perodua tak buat modem...Kalau tidak....habis la....STREAMYX WAJA Modem....Kancil Series STREAMYX modem....
So, wa mau tanya lu orang...Macam mana nak BOLEH...
Bekerjalah bersama-sama saya.....ha ha hee he he

whoa ppl don't be in the rush. as long we have the abang-adik, saudara-saudari relationships where everyone has to take care of everyone elses @ss thingy going on, just like our dear politicians we can forget about competing with more advance countries. might as well stick to comparing ourselves with indonesia and ghana... *grinz*

Is there any surprise? People in our developed state, Selangor, still drink stinking water. Perhaps we should start with the basic; how to define drinkable water instead of this broadband.
This country is only good in using adjectives like “Super “ as super corridor , “ Smart “ as smart partnership and “ Boleh “ as Malaysia Boleh what else do they really know?

Oh .. we also have a streamyx promotion. RM77/m for a 1000kbs connection, but only during the last year end school holidays.
When I enquired to upgrade to a 1meg line in January, I was told the fee was to be RM88/m.
On second thought, why should I upgrade when most of the time I only get 100kbs download for my 512kbs connection ?

"To make it happen, the private sector has been invited to partner the government in this bold project."
Only when a government is trully clean and committed, then such mega project can be realised.
With Bolehland government "Third world mentality but almost First world benefits", such project will always be a dream only. Multimedia Super Corridor is one good example. Latest one to hit the news, Digi losing the bid for 3G but to advise working closer with the two winners!!
One project that requires 100 million to execute might end up costing few hundred millions!!

No need to have UMNO CM in Penang, we have UMNO PM from Penang.
He is going to give a present to Penang and was announced in his Penang’s CNY gathering. And I strongly support Neil comments: “Just do it, No more time, it’s tundra temperature here.”
For sure people like to compare, Malaysia would like to compare with African countries on economical advancement, compares with Western Nations in terms of knowledge development, compare with Brunei on oil price? Ah aha they pay no income tax in that country.
We should instead, BENCHMARK, benchmark with someone have a same living style like us, benchmark with someone who has the same background like us.
Singapore Island, Oh! No! Not them again, we should select Hong Kong as our benchmarking partner.
Don’t look at Hong Kong’s Central, is their capital; instead we should look into their outskirts, town like Sheung Shui, or Yuen Long. Broadband is able to connected to every household at a minimum speed of 3000kbps for a monthly of HK$196 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Penang outskirts enjoy a dial-up at 56Kbps and charged per minute & monthly phone line rentals.
Sheung Shui bas station and railway station are elderly friendly, disable friendly. Our elderly and disabled need to climb, climb and climb the staircases to board the famous Penang Ferry. Yuen Long minibus drivers are kind and courteous, yet is like “end of the world” kind of squeeze in Penang.
Hong Kong was a British Colony like us, why can’t we as success as them.
So is it as what dtsv said:”Penang is not a Malay showcase.”
Oh boy, is Pak Lah show case now.

Dear all,
please criticise constuctively. There are trishaw services in London and new york. Korea is the most wired country presently and therefore nothing wrong with korean broadband equipments. And if there is broadband of up to 100Mgbytes per second into every household, it will be wasted on movie downloads, games and blogging etc. best if only important installations to have this facility such as research and medical institution. While we may look up to Singapore for many things, you will be surprise at the many negative comments on their blogs site.

There's nothing wrong with Penarik Becha, is something wrong we do still allow the becha squeeze their passenger like sandwich in the traffics, and its exhausts, you see this in London and New York ? San Diego Zoo do have the Shanghai Style two wheeler type, but is in protected area.
Even PM/Wen Jiabao will starts to waste his time on blogging too, he just mentioned it a few hours ago in Beijing, is to keep his citizens informed on current issues.
The truth is, Penang has been under develop for too long, is time to evolve again.
Thanks and appreaciate to CM/YAB Koh, starts to re-organized the bus system now. I would like to meet him in outskirts of Hong Kong if possible, and study their efficient buses feeding system.

So movie downloads are a waste of bandwidth compared to medical adverts issit.
Oh I didn't know games are a waste too! Shame these people spending billions and billions on games, that money should be better off in some subscription service where we can see the surgeon's pimple in HD performing surgery eh?

Since I'm here in London, might as well compare the two. I'm living in uni accommodation here, with a 100Mbps broadband line. I paid 70 pounds (about RM 450) for 9 months. I'm permanently online, permanently connected, and use it for everything that sydput above criticised (downloading movies, songs, playing games, chatting and blogging, but also doing research for school work)
Back home I'm using a 56 K dialup, that costs (in total RM 0.04 per minute). That's 2.40 an hour. For 24/7 that's RM 403 a month. What I pay in Malaysia for a month, I pay here for 9 months. This is because that in spite of Malaysia being the first world technologically advanced nation that she is, my area still can't get broadband. And I live in Shah Alam, capital of Selangor. Hah!
Just thought I'd tell you. I don't know how I'm to get used to dialup again. So jakun when I came here "Wah so fast, wah so cheap, wah so long". Wah indeed.

Reading my post again, I realise there's no conclusion. So in conclusion:
We don't need the "Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure". We don't need information super corridors. What we need is basic cheap affordable broadband that everyone and anyone can get. Not too much to ask for. We don't have to and shouldn't be comparing ourselves to Singapore, they're miles ahead of us. Let's just get the basics right first.

Wow very large bandwidth INTRAnet. And dont forget large bandwidth not automically equals to low latency, so all the assumptions about instanteous conferencing is not necessarily true. Unless Singapore Socialist Inc. wants to pay out for more undermarine cable on top of the welfare benefits to their citizens, dont expect increases in speeds in accessing most foreign websites.
Models of teleworking etc. are not new and is not suitable for most businesses, for a variety of reasons.

OK! point taken #%$%&%$% to telekom and the gahmen. Just in case you would like to know, the apollo mission spacecraft uses less computing power than the average home computer presently. If you manage to get streamyx in your area, go for the cheapest available plan. Also we have masses of under utilised fibre optics network all over the country, owned by agencies such as tenaga, Petronas, telekom and time.(Tenaga, together with fibrecomm owns the longest) I just don't understand why they are sitting on this without
utilising this to the maximum. And why is Penang being singled out for special treatment???
