Virtual Backbone & Real Spine
Four American technology giants, namely Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft and Cisco Systems, got a shelling from US Congressmen this morning for kow-towing to and culluding with China to suppress its citizens' freedoms to knowledge and expression on the Internet.
What I heard over BBC this morning is now being gathered on Google News:
"These companies need to do more than show virtual backbone; what Congress is looking for is real spine," California Rep. Tom Lantos, ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee, said during a subcommittee hearing.
"These companies say they will change China when China has already changed them," Lantos said.
Comments
I wonder if the company is locate at China, they have to follow the local law, right? If failure to provide evidence, will this lead to its closure of business?
I guess the US aware that one of the way to distabilize China is thru this.

Companies doing business in China has to comply with China's laws, no matter how imperfect they may be. The alternative is not to do business there but I wonder how many businesses are prepared to walk away from one of the largest market in the world.
US companies operating outside of the US have to comply with US laws. So unless the US laws prohibit such companies from any form of censorship, I guess they can only censure.

"China did not ask you come here, but why you were here from the first place ?"
The above statement is what I usually heard from the Chinese Authority.

The Americans especially those in the Government or as Members of Congress must learn one thing and that's-- the world does not belong to them. Being the only super power, it is telling what other countries what to do or to do it the way they want. This is pure arrogance and in their mind eyes others do not exist!
They think they are making the world a "safer" place, I doubt it very very much! In fact, by their recalcitrant and arrogant ways, they are making the world into a unsafe place and place of fire.
Take for instance, they want to 'democratise the Middle East... see what has happened in Palestine, Hamas has won by democratic election and yet they are vary of the victory. So where do we go from here.
The Iran impasse is another example. Whilst you can have nuclear bomb, others must not have! There will be healthy tension if there is no interference.
Take the case of China bashing. Nothing the Chinese have done is right except that they must listen to the US. The US members of congress, many of them are like frogs in the well, they look up and see the world that 'big' as exemplified by the well mouth. They are living in a cocoon and suck in by their own belief that they call the tune. Yes, when in Rome do as the Romans do. If they don't like you, they pass a law in their Congress and ask you to follow their laws? What kind of democracy they are talking about. Look and listen to their leaders talking, as if they have not matured. Now they bash their own companies doing business in China. They want to interfere with the Chinese law governing the operation of internet. Basically, the law governing internet confirm with international norms.
Another example is the Taiwan Relations Act which they passed many years ago. They expect that China must follow this act passed by the US Congress. In the act, it is stated that US will provide ( free of charge) arms for Taiwan and yet now US want Taiwan to pay for these arms to be 'provided' by US under this act. And when China passed the Anti-Separation Act, there were a lot of comments on this. In fact, this Chinese act follows very closely, the US act passed in the 1865 American Anti-cessation Act when the USA was in the Civil war period.
So, when will these members of US congress grow up and think out of their boxes that the world indeed has changed!

peterpan:
In your haste to bash US foreign policy you have been so blinded by your bias and end up barking up the wrong tree.
Congress is not "bashing" China or its reprehensible policy of censorship per se. It is bashing AMERICAN companies that collaborate with the Chinese government and are party to aiding the Communists spread their propaganda. What is wrong with that? Absolutely nothing, in fact, it's absolutely spot on, especially in the case of Google.
Google has in the past refused to provide information and/or censure web content for its users in the US of A and the rest of the world, citing "freedom of expression" and an individual's right to privacy. That is a highly laudable stance. Yet now, in pursuit of the almighty Dollar (or Remnibi, if you so wish) Google is prepared to bend over backwards to accommodate the Chinese just so it can gain access to the Chinese market?
What sort of message is the company sending out here? "We have principles, but are prepared to sacrifice them for a price"?
Even worse is Microsoft, which has adroitly given confidential information of Chinese bloggers who use its facilities (I believe it was MSNSpace blogs) to do nothing more inocuous than bash the government, so said blogger can be arrested and sent of for a nice, relaxing jaunt in a re-education camp. I can't believe anyone with a conscience can condone such practices, but of course for some people US-bashing is more important than principles.
i find it absolutely amusing that people are so willing to bash the Americans for insisting their companies stand up against propaganda and censorship in China, yet in the same breath demand more individual freedoms here in Malaysia.
"They want to interfere with the Chinese law governing the operation of internet. Basically, the law governing internet confirm with international norms."
Hahahahaha. I've read some rubbish on the web, but that has to rank as one of the most ludicrous statements ever. Basically if Malaysia was to introduce such draconian Internet laws as China I can bet my months paycheck you would be singing a different tune.
Imagine searching google.com.my for May 13 and nothing comes up - like how nothing comes up when you search Tiananmen square on google.com.cn. Imagine criticizing the government on your blog and when you wake up the next morning the secret police is there to drag you off to Kamunting.
Not such a cheery thought, eh.
