Vultures, food for thought

Sarawak Tribune has an audited circulation of about 25,000 copies daily until its publishing and printing licences were suspended indefinitely yesterday.

Umno's mouthpieces, notably Jalan Riong ( The NST and Berita Harian ) and Jalan Chan Sow Lin, say the Sarawak Tribune management had decided to suspend themselves indefinitely even without the government's clamp-down order.

Which vultures will swarm over Sarawak Tribune's carcass to fill that 25,000 copies' void?

I bet not NST and Star.

The Star and NST are "fringe" papers in Sarawak. There is no local production, one gets the papers late morning of lunch time, air-lifted, and cost almost double.

In addition, they pay scant attention to Sarawak affairs, so lacks the local flavour.

No, it would be the other local English daily, The Borneo Post who will be laughing all the way to the bank!

In any case, the Tribune has been loosing market share to the Post over the last few years due to deteriorating quality of reporting and English.

I agree with Limeuu. I used to be a loyal reader of the Sarawak Tribune. But I stopped suscribing to the ST around three or four years ago due to the deteriorating quality in the formatting and writing of the paper. As much as people like to defend the ST, I believe that this "mistake" might just be the culmulation of many years of being slack in quality.

The Borneo Post might not be up to standards of foreign papers, but it's a definitely much better-managed paper. It might just fill the void the suspended ST left. Even so, there are still Sarawakians who prefer papers from West Malaysia to the local dailies.

It's easy to suspend a newspaper's licence. What about the livelihood of those innocent workers? Who's gonna defend their rights? You called this a "Caring Society"? I DON'T THINK SO!

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
