OKlah... it's a mid-term reshuffle
UPDATED VERSION, 15:00hr It's Valentine's Day!
What better Valentine's gift for local journalists -- "especially those who have worked in foreign media" -- than to have the Minister of Information in Zainuddin Maidin.
ZAM, as he is fondly known, is also the only minister from Dr Mahathir's political fortress, Kedah
So, will Aisheman's prophecised Battle Royale take place soon?
I didn't put in a caveat when the word 'Major' was used with a 'sic' accent. It has been a MAJOR letdown which I dreaded but turned out to be truer than true.
The Prime Minister said he hoped his ministers would perform, but he visibly didn't look his confident self when announcing the list -- what more with his deputy standing within breathing distance as if to make sure Pak Lah doesn't miss reading the prepared script.

It's almost status quo in portfolios with fat budgets which are the nation's economic drivers, so all incumbent ministers should sigh relief for now.
Like it or not, this is the team that retains its XL-size, and they will take Malaysia right through the 9th Malaysia Plan.
The other deputy minister promoted to full minister is former Deputy FT Minister Zulhasnan Rafique, who has been appointed FT Minister. His deputy is Abu Seman Yusop, who was internal security ministry’s parliamentary secretary.
There are two comeback kids, namely Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who leads the Tourism Ministry, and Dr Mohd Effendi Norwawi, who is made a Minister in PM's Dept.
The re-arranged furniture involved Tok Pa, who is now the Minister of Higher Education; Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad is the new Home Affairs Minister, and Azmi Khalid is retained and transferred to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.
Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh and Leo Michael Toyad have been dropped, while Adenan Satem chose to go back to state politics in Sarawak, which is facing an election soon.
Deputy Ministers
Controversial deputy Internal Security Minister Noh Omar is now the deputy Education Minister. (Will he tolerate ketuk ketampi [ ear-squat ] in the schools?) Noh's post in the Internal Security Ministry is taken over by Mohd Johari Baharum, the former parliamentary secretary of the Prime Minister's Department. Johari, a Kedahan, is also the former political secretary to Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Noh's counterpart deputy, Chia Kwang Chye (Gerakan) has also been transferred out of the ministry.
Chia is now deputy Information Minister, replacing Donald Lim Siang Chai (MCA), who is now deputy Tourism Minister. Chia's former portfolio as the deputy Internal Security Minister is filled by incumbent deputy minister of Higher Education, Fu Ah Keow (MCA).
MCA Youth Chief Liow Tiong Lai has been appointed deputy Youth and Sports Minister, replacing Ong Tee Keat (MCA), who is tranferred to be the deputy Higher Education Minister.
Incumbent deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Kerk Choo Teng, who lost in his bit for Gerakan presidency last year, has been dropped. He is replaced by former deputy Minister for International Trade and Industries Mah Siew Keong (Gerakan). Mah's position is taken over by incumbent Parliamentary Secretary for Plantations and Primary Commodity Ministry, Ng Lip Yong (Gerakan).
Apart from Kerk, two other deputy ministers were dropped from the line-up, namely former deputy education minister Mahadzir Mohd Khir, and former deputy finance minister, Tengku Putera Tengku Awang.
Incumbent deputy tourism minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is now the other deputy information minister partnering Chia.
Dr Awang Adek Hussin has been moved from deputy rural and regional development minister to deputy finance minister. His post in the rural and regional development ministry is given to Zainal Abidin Osman, former parliamentary secretary of Foreign Affairs.
parliamentary Secretaries
New faces: Ahmad Shabery Cheek is the foreign affairs ministry parliamentary secretary, and S Vijayaratnam (Gerakan), the new parliamentary secretary for plantation enterprises and commodities.
Original posting: Stay tuned for who's in and who's out in Pak Lah's administration.
The operative word I heard is 'Major' (sic) though portfolios of BN component party chiefs are unlikely to be shifted around.

Basically, AB power to touch representatives from component parties is pretty much limited. If there are any major changes, they would have to come from his own party.
Everyone is watching Khairy's influnce.

Personally, i wish Pak Lah will downsize his jumbo size cabinet. My top list cabinet miniters to be either dropped or trasffered are Samy Vellu, Hishamuddin, Rafidah, Nazri, Ka Ting and Shafie Salleh.
I wonder will Khairy be appointed as a minister in the reshuffle?

I think the puzzle is solved. Badawi was in Kuching on last Saturday to see Taib and Sarawak election is just around the corner and Adenan is poised to replace Taib as CM of Sarawak. Now that Adenan Satem had been dropped from the cabinet..i think it's pretty confirmed then:)

Well, if you consider it pragmatically, the PM's options were pretty limited.
First up, Rafidah is the most experienced trade negotiator we have. Say what you like about her shortcomings, the lady really knows her job. And she is well-respected in organisations such as the WTO and Apec.
Second, the MIC has to have Cabinet representation. Its an indictment of the MIC succession system that Samy has not put in place a logical succession plan.
Third, the PM and his advisors have to contain the influence of the Najib camp. The real battle has yet to be fought at the upcoming UMNO GA and party elections.
Fourth, a way has to be found to sell a reincarnated NEP to the rakyat.
I view this MINOR cabinet reshuffle as an interim measure. More changes will come after the PM announces the Budget and the 9MP.
Btw, I am surprised that Toyad was dropped as a minister. I thought that he was doing a good job in the Tourism portfolio, but perhaps some quarters demanded that he had to go.

Humans are not like machines, they grew wih experience. I like spock's analysys.
Rafidah had some hiccups over th AP issue, but looking at the bigger picture, I think AB is right to keep her. There are other more "attractive" candidates to prune.

Pak Lah should know that no one is "indespensible", one fine day the PM job wil be assumed by someone.
The biggest of my disappointment of the reshuffle are the following old gun who didn't perform above the par still retain their job. I would expect Pak Lah to either drop or trasfer them.
1) Minister of Works
Samy Vellu
2) Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department
Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz
3) Minister of International Trade and Industry
Rafidah Aziz
4) Minister of Education
Hishammuddin Hussein

I put all my trust in a BARISAN friend
When that is broken, it's pretty much the end.
You try and try but you find,
It's hard to wipe the hurt from your mind.
They never ask for forgiveness,so i dont try .
But the hurt lingers and we actually wonder why.
Why can't we let it go,
Is there something we dont know?
Trust is such a fragile thing
And when it's broken, only hurt it brings.
That crack put in your heart,
May never, ever depart.
It's easier to just stay away
Than to feel the hurt everyday.
So, you back off and let it go
And find another friend with which you can grow.

rafidah still in MITI? i doesn't make sense! it's blatant wrong after all the exposure in the AP controversy. enriching herself (via relatives and cronies) and impoverishing the nation and her own race (aka Bumiputras) is betrayal.
AP should be given to KWSP, Tabung Haji, ASN, SOCSO and the income accrued to the people. imagine how many people can own a computer with higher payout from those entity, how many children can further their education via scholarship, how many cancer victims can have modern drugs to fight the disease, how many months of bonus goverment servant can have every year with extra income from AP, how many muslim can go for pilgrimage and etc. instead, you chose politic over your people and kept the fat cat (literally) in MITI. it's so wrong, PM AB.

Cabinet reshuffle is done to streamline the administration and ensure that the policies that the party in power will implement. Look at this reshuffle, it gives the impression that the musical chairs are being moved around for some of the more junior portfolios. The heavy-weights remain in the ministries and continue to do the routine without any fresh ideas and programmes for the benefits of the rakyat. Deadwoods are there and you cannot expect any new ideas and new things to happen. I have not attached much hopes on this impending reshuffle before the announcement simply because, AB looks like more than a lame-duck PM waiting for his exit! How can you keep a team which is not coherent and play different tunes each time. Look at the Kepong ring-road mess, it did not have to wait until AB gave the direction. In fact. the minister responsible should have quickly got the job done so that the people as taxpayers who pay to keep them, having to endure suffering from the massive traffic jam each and everyday!. These "big shots" should be made to travel on this kind of roads to realize the frustration of the rakyat having to put up with the inconvenience! Of course, they have their sirens to blare away to clear the way for them that they do not suffer the stress that ordinary rakyat have to go through. Today, that fellow is still there to blame the weather for causing the damage! What type of crap is that!
The country does not stand still when it comes to controversy...we have them everyday, yet those who are respnonsible are still sitting comfortably in their offices in Putrajaya as if thumbing their noses on the rakyat -- Apa lu boleh buat!

Well, maybe, the Opposition should offer some credible alternatives to the rakyat instead of the same old, same old moanings and criticisms!
The BN govt can be taken to task for the clear lack of succession planning - i.e. why is there no one deemed capable of replacing Rafidah and Samy, for example?
You can also fault the rakyat's penchant for bad-mouthing those who seem to have ascended the political or corporate ladder too fast - the equivalent of the Aussie "tall poppy syndrome". Why would any rational, capable Malaysian want to stick his or her nose into the political arena with all the nay-sayers and crap floating around?
Yup - Malaysians are good armchair critics, but put them to the test and they invariably revert to the comfort of the status quo. As you sow, so shall you reap - as the saying goes!

Spock say, "the Opposition should offer some credible alternatives to the rakyat"
What is "credible alternative"? An incumbants bureaucrat that work inside government? Or an experience politkus that know nothing about the job but polish by the local media with all sort of non-sense qualification that "sound" qualify ?
Nevertheless, all you ask will end up in void because the people failed for 4 decades to create strong opposition voice.
